HOISTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DUN- 1 MIKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ruifs Dale, in the county of lVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hoisting devices, and more particularly to that type of device commonly known as a derrick or mast in connection with which cables are used for hoisting material, the cables being moved through the medium of a Windlass or winding device.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a hoisting device made of structural steel and consisting of comparatively few parts easily assembled to provide a durable structure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hoisting device that can be easily lowered to permit of the cables being placed in position and the movable parts of the device lubricated.
With these objects in view and such others that may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described in detail and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the hoisting device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the drawing 1 designates a base plate mounted upon a suitable foundation 2. Secured to the base plate 1 by rivets 3 or other fastening means are two longitudinal angle bars 4, said bars being arranged with the vertical flanges 5 thereof parallel. Pivota'lly mounted between the flanges 5 by a pin 6 is a T-shaped. pedestal, comprising angle bars 7 to the upper ends of which is fixed a rectangular frame 8, said frame also being constructed of angle iron. The lower end of the pedestal is rounded ofl', as at 9 whereby it can be lowered to a horizontal position; but under ordinary circumstances, the pedestal is maintained in a vertical position by pins 10 arranged transversely of the flanges 5 and engaging the edge of the Specification of Letters Patent.

In the frame 8 is arranged a winding device or Windlass, comprising revoluble shafts 11 and 12, and mounted upon the shaft 11 is a drum 13 and a large gear wheel 14 adapted to mesh with a small gear wheel 15 l mounted upon the shaft 12. The shaft 12 is provided with collars 16 providing an annular groove or spool 17, which is used as an auxiliary to the drum 13. In connection with the shaft 12 break bands 18 are used, these bands being of a conventional form and forming no part of my invention, other than a means of controlling the unwinding of the shaft 12. The shafts 11 and 12 protrude through one side of the frame and are provided with rectangular shanks 19 to permit of a crank 20 being used in connection with either shaft.
Upon the top of the frame 8 is secured a standard comprising L-shaped angle bars 21 arranged back to back, the confronting flanges of said bars adjacent to the upper ends thereof being ofl-set, as at 22 to provide a window 23 for a revoluble sheave or pulley 24. Secured between the upper ends of the angle bars 21 by rivets 25 isthe depending shank 26 of a cross head 27, said cross head having the ends thereof connected to stay cables or rods 28 adapted to be suitably anchored to support the hoisting device in a vertical position. The cross head 27 is provided with a mast 29 and this mast is braced by a plurality of stay cables or rods 30 adapted to be suitably anchored. The top of the mast is provided with a ring 31 and a revoluble sheave 32, which is used as an auxiliary to the sheave 24. The top of the frame 8 is provided with a gravity pawl 33 adapted to engage the large gear wheel 14 and lock the same from a rearward rotation. Attached to the drum 13 is a hoisting cable 34 adapted to pass over either of the sheaves 24 or 32, preferably the latter, whereby another cable can be used in connection with the sheave 32 and the spool 17.
A hoisting device of the above character can be advantageously used upon war vessels, where it is often desired to arrange the hoisting device at an angle to protrude over the side of the vessel, and when clearing the deck for action to lower the same upon the deck. However, I do not care to confine myself to any specific use, nor to the size and proportion of the structural elements.
Other changes can be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention What I claim as new, is
1. A hoisting device comprising a base, a pedestal pivotally connected to said base and adapted to be lowered into a horizontal plane, a rectangular frame secured to the top of said pedestal, a standard secured to the top of said frame, a cross head carried by the top of said standard and adapted to be braced to support said hoisting device in a vertical position, a mast carried by the upper end of said standard and adapted to be braced to assist said cross head in supporting said device in a vertical position, a sheave revolubly supported by the upper end of said standard, and a Winding device arranged Within said frame and adapted to move a cable over said sheave.
2. In a hoisting device, a base, a pedestal movably connected to said base, a frame carried by the upper end of said pedestal, a standard mounted upon the upper end of said frame, a revoluble sheave carried by the upper end of said standard, a Winding device Within said frame and adapted to move a cable over said sheave, a mast carried by the upper end of said standard, a sheave revolubly mounted in the upper end of said mast and adapted to cooperate with said Winding device, and means connected to said device and adapted to be suitably anchored for supporting said device in a vertical position.
