SNOW-MEILTER.
To all whom it mag/concern:
.13e `it kknown that l, SAMUEL B. Gori?, a citizen of the United States, residing in the Vcity and county of Camden, `State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful -Snow-Melter, of which the lfollowing is a specification.
My invention `consists `of a snow .melter or melting device in which provision is made melting snow thereinas occasion requires.
VFor the purpose -of explaining the invention, fthe accompanying Vdrawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to pracitice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention 1s not limited lto ithe specific arrangement land organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a snow melter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. F ig. 3 represents a section of a portion of a non-slipping wheel that may be employed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the ligures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a truck or vehicle composed of a body having depending sides 2, wheels 3 thereon, and the handle 4 for evident purposes. 1n the body intermediate of the front and rear portions is the diaphragm 5, which is preferably inclined or sloping in forwardly direction, and forming front and rear chambers as at 6 and 7. ln the chamber 6 is a tank 8 which is suitably supported thereon, the same being adapted to contain hydrocarbon or other combustible oil or fluid, and having connected with it the distributing pipes 9 which extend forward from the tank, pass through the diaphragm 5 and enter the chamber 7 which they occupy in the main, they being provided with jets 10 which point preferably upwardly. Connected with the tank is a pump 11 which is adapted to'receive air and forcibly direct the same into the pipes 12, portions of which enter the pipes 9, they being of smaller diameter than the latter and having outlet ports 18, whereby air may be discharged into said pipes 9, and as the latter are supplied with oil or fluid from the tank Specification of Letters 'Patent Application led February 3, 1910.
Patented June14, 1910.
Serial No. 541,886.
i 8, said oil or fluid is converted into vapor, in which condition it enters the chamber 47 where it is ignited and burned forming an intense heat therein. Within 'the chamber 7 above the pipes 9 are troughs 14: which re- `,ceive vthe heat of said chamber, they having in their lower portions the outlets 15 for melted snow as will be hereinafter described. yBetween the upper ends of said troughs is the nozzle 16, which is in communication with the Vchamber 7 for the outlet `of 4the products 1of combustion, =it having a cap or cover 517 hinged `thereto and serves as `a `valve to control said outlet. At the front ofthe body ofthe truck is a gate 18 which may be `raised kand lowered through the opening 19 in the top of said body.
The'operation is as follows VVhen it is desired to direct the heat generated in the chamber 7 vagainst a bank of snow in front of the truck, lthe cap 17 is closed and the gate v18 opened ywhen the heat is deflected for- -wardly from said chamber by the ydiaphragm 5 assisted by the front walls of the troughs 14 which are somewhat inclined, thuscausing the snow lto melt. Iif it is `desired to direct the heat to a body of snow below the truck, the gate is closed, when the heat escapes at the open bottom of the chamber 7. 1f it is desired to melt the snow on the sides of the truck, it is shoveled into the troughs 14. 1n this case the gate is closed, and the cap 17 opened. The troughs are now effectively subjected to the products of combustion, the open nozzle 16 serving to create a draft in the chamber which forcibly directs the heat against said troughs and so quickly melts the snow, the water whereof escapes through the outlets 15.
The wheels may have non-slipping devices thereon and the body provided with a moving device, a form of which is shown in dotted lines F ig. 2, but these form no part of the snow-melting features.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a snow melting device, a body formed with a combustion chamber throughout a part of its length and open at its bottom, means for supporting such body to be propelled over the ground with the open bottom in close proximity to the same, a tank for liquid fuel mounted on the body, and burner pipes connected to said tank and eX- tending throughout the combustion chamber.
2. In a snow melting device, a body provided with a combustion chamber, a tank for inflammable fluid, a fluid conveying pipe leading from said tank into said chamber, an air pressure device, and an air conveying pipe leadino from said air pressure device and adapted to open into said fluid conveying pipe.
3. In a snow melting device, a body formed with a combustion chamber open at its botto-m and front end, means for supporting such body to be propelled over the ground with the open bottom in close proximity to the same, means for generating heat within the combustion chamber, and a gate in said front end of the chamber for opening and closing the same.
4. In a snow melting device, a body formed with a combustion chamber through out the forward portion thereof having a deflecting top and an open bottom, means for supporting such body to be propelled over the ground with the open bottom in close proximity to the same, a tank for liquid fuel supported on the body, and burner pipes connected to said tank `and extending throughout the combustion chamber beneath the deflecting top.
5. In a snow melting device, a body formed with a combustion chamber throughout the forward portion thereof having a defleoting top and an open bottom and forward end, means for supporting such body to be propelled over the ground with the open bottom in close proximity thereto, a closure out the combustion chamber beneath the deflecting top.
6. In a snow melting device, a body, means for generating heat therein, a snowreceiving vessel in said body adapted to be subjected to said heat, a draft nozzle connected with said vessel in communication with the heat-generating chamber of said body, and means for closing and opening said nozzle.
7. In a snow melting device, a body, a tank for inflammable fluid therein, a fluid conveying pipe leading from said tank and adapted to open into said body, said body being open below, and having an opening in front, and means for closing said front opening.
8. In a snow melting device, a body, a snow receiving vessel in the top of said body and consisting of a plurality of receptacles substantially V-shaped in section and arranged parallel to each other, heat generating means beneath said receptacles, and a nozzle between the edges of two receptacles and provided with means for controlling draft through it from the heat generating means.
