To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Fannnuorr DndLL, manufacturer, a subject of the Grand Duke of Baden, and a resident of 15 Bergheimerstrasse, Heidelberg, Grand Dukedom of Baden, Germany, have'invented certain new and useful improvements in Pyrophoric Devices for Lamps of Cycles, Automobiles, and the Like, of which the fol.- lowing is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a pyrophoric igniting device for lamps of cycles, automobiles and the like. In such lamps the ignition has been connected with great ditliculties, particularly in unfavorable weather in the open.
According to the present invention the ignition is effected by the production of -sparks at the gas orifice, while the lamp remains closed. The sparks may be conveniently produced through the scratching of a pyrophoric mass by sharp roughened device. The use of pyrophoric material in ordinary miners lamps has been proposed before, but such constructions can not be used for the present purpose without further inventive efiort, because the wind and the draft caused by the motion of the vehicle do not permit the few sparks produced by the device to get to the gas orifice, further because the number and direction of such sparks do not suiiice for the special conditions prevailing in lamps of cycles, automobiles and the like, and finally because such known constructions are not equal to the mechanical requirements of vehicle traiiic either as regards jars, easy inspection or removal. Thesedeficiencies are-overcome by the present invention by a perforation from below in the casing and reflector of the cycle or automobile lamp and the introduction through the same of a pyrophoric igniting device of suitable construction, directed toward the zone of ignition either front or behind the feed pipe, so that even in a strong draft the gas is driven toward the place where the sparks are produced and the sparks are caused to pass through the escaping gases, and, if the air is still, the collection of sparks will pass directly through the upwardly passing current of gas. It is of importance in this connection that provision is made for the examination or removal of the igniting device. As regards the construction of the latter. it is of that it produces type.

In order that this invention may be the better understood I now proceed to describe by way of example how it may be carried into effect, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures marked thereon.

A pii 29 of the bolt 28 extends through .the casing out-- wardly and slides in the curved paths of a disk 31. The latter is connected to another disk 32 screwed'thereon so that, when the disk 32 is rotated by a handle or handles 33, the bolt 29 draws the friction bolt 28 and curve 30 allows it to be ushed again by its spiral spring,w ereby, as in the revious examples the collection of sparks is thrown on the escaping gases.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 5 a bolt 34, carrying at its end the friction surface is inclosed in a sleeve 35 so that it .is ressed forward by the spiral spring 36. l lowever, its forward movement 1s limited by one or more cross pins 37 arranged on its rear end, such pins 37 being situated in a slot of the sleeve 35, a hand wheel 38- is pushed over the reargend of the sleeve 35 and 1s provided with a lengthened'boss which has a curved ath 39, which at its side somewhat before 1: e rise has another step or recess. The cross pin 37, which passes through the hole in the sleeve is guided in this curved path 39 and therefore draws the bolt back more or less, until after passing the recess and the following rise, the bolt is again suddenly thrown forward by the spiral spring arranged behind it and produces a collection of sparks. The front end of the sleeve is provided with a screw head 40 by which the lgniting device can be screwed into the lamp casing and the reflector. After ignition it 15 advisable to withdraw the bolt 34 by the partial rotation of the hand wheel 38 until its pin rests in the rear recess of the curved .path 39 in which position the friction bolt is removed, from the direct influences and Euidin orwar piece carried by said tube occupying a horses the heat of the burner flameand further the ignition device is quite close to its completely compressed position, so that for the repeated use only a minimum further amount of rotation of the hand'wheel 38 is required. It will be obvious that other forms of construction may be used than those illustrated, because the nature of the invention consists in the arrangement of an easily exchangeable pyrophoric ignition device arranged in the casifi and reflector of. lamps'of cycles,
