THOMAS WINLACK, 0F NILES, MICHIGAN.
PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1910.
Application filed January 15, 1910. Serial No. 588,260.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WINLAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, count-y 0f Berrien, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of printing presses employing composition inking rolls. These rolls are made of a composition having a low melting point so that in the summer time said rolls are frequently melted and destroyed by the heat of the friction incident to their use.
The object of my invention is to provide means on the press for preventing this melting of the inking rolls, which shall be of simple construction, eflicient in operation and readily attached or detached from the press.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printing press embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an enlarged sectional elevation showing the inking rolls and cooling fan, and Fig. 3, an elevation of one of the bearings for supporting the cooling fan.
.The preferred form of construction comprises a flat fan 1 carried by a shaft 2 mounted in bearings 3 at either side of the press and so arranged as to position the fan 1 in close proximity to the inking rolls 4 of the press. Each of the bearings 3 is supported upon a standard 5 secured to the side of the frame of the press and comprising lower bearing portions 6 and upper bearing portions 7 hinged thereto. At its end opposite to its hinge the member 7 carries a swinging locking bolt 8 adapted to take between lugs 9 on the member 6 to secure said member 7 in position. Near one end shaft 2 carries a small spur gear 10 meshing with the large driving gear 11 attached to the end of cylinder 12.
By the construction above set forth, it will be observed that a blast of air will be forced across the inking rolls 5 keeping them cool and that the fan and its operating parts may be readily attached to or detached from the press when desired.
WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with the inking rolls of a printing press having an impression cylinder provided with a driving gear at one end; standards at either side of the press; hearings on said standards located in alinement above said inking rolls, each of said bearings comprising a lower bearing member, an upper bearing member hinged to said lower bearing member and a detachable locking connection between said bearing members; a shaft in said bearing; a gear on said shaft meshing with said cylinder gear; and a fan on said shaft adapted to force a blast of air over said inking rolls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS INLACK.
lVit-nesses CHRISTINA WINLAoK, BELLE CRoss.
