Description
1. GQPETERSUN.
Printing-Presses.

Witnesss:
STATES ATEN'I IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,648, dated September 9, 1873 application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB G. PETERSON, of Morgantown, in the county of Burke and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Printing-Press, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the improvement of printing-presses, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan viewof the machine with some of the parts. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section.
A represents the type-bed, having a recess, 13, in the upper surface, in which the frame 0 containing the type is placed. D represents the supporting-frame, which is hinged to the bed at E, to be raised for receiving the paper and lowered for placing it on the type. F is a thin metal plate in connection with the supporting-frame to cover the paper and type, to deliver the pressure of the roller directly on the ends of the type, and prevent it from rolling or dropping into the grooves or spaces between the rows of type, which injures the delicate angles of the type. H is the upper presserroller, which works upon the upper side of the type-bed and rolls over the plate F. These rollers are arran gedin areciprocatin g carriage,
,I, which is suspended on the type-bed by the cause the presser-rollers to move forward beyond the type and back again, which makes the impression on the paper. After each operation the tympan is raised, the printed. sheet is removed, and an unprinted sheet is applied,
and the tympan is lowered for the next operation.
To print with this press, place the chase in the excavation, and within the chase securely fasten the form of type. Ink the type by means of a roller. The metal plate, with its tympan and paper-fastenings, being elevated to the right, place upon the tympan the sheet to be printed, lower the frame to its horizontal line, and, supposing the rollers to be on the extreme left, turn the crank to the right about a revolution, when the upper roller will have passed over the plate, producing impression No.1. Raise the tympan, take off the printed sheet, replace with an unprinted one, lower the tympan, and, by a reversed crank movement to the left, impression No. 2 is produced, 850.
The metal plate prevents all irregularities of the form, and thus prevents the inj ury which otherwise would accrue to the delicate lines and angles of the type.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Thearrangement of the reciprocating carriage I, presser-rollers G H, toothed bars L, wheels M, crank-shaft N, presser-rollers O, and stationary housings P with the type-bed, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the metal plate F with supporting-frame, the recessed bed,'and the reciprocating rollers, as described.
