To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH G. TRIM- BACH and CHARLES G. ALLHorr, citizens of the United. States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Job-Printing Presses; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in job printing presses.
The object of the invention is to provide a platen-adjuster by means of which the press is adapted to expeditiously print on varying thicknesses of sheets ranging from a single sheet of paper to heavy cardboard, or on books or pamphlets already bound. l/Vith this utility in mind reference is made to the accompanying drawings of which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printing press equipped with our invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the clamping devices and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of that portion of the mechanism shown in Fig. 2.
In the specification and drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings 1 designates a side plate of a job printing press which is the counterpart of a similar side plate on the opposite side of the machine. The bottom of the side plates 1 supports a pivot shaft 2 on which is mounted an upright frame 3, the latter supporting the type chase 4. The frame 3 also carries the inking mechanism which is not shown as it forms no part 0 the present invention. The said frame 3 is reciprocated on its pivot 2 to print, as follows. Mounted in the rear portion of said frame 3 is a shaft 5 which has upon its ends eccentric pins 6 which are pivotally attached to the rear ends of connecting rods 7 It will be understood that there are two of these connecting rods, one on each side of the machine. The forward ends of said connecting rods 7 are attached to crank dials 8 which are mounted on a shaft 9 journaled in the side plates 1. The said shaft 9 is provided with a gear 10 which meshes with a pinion 11 on a main shaft 12, the latter being also Specification of Letters Patent.

journaled in the side plates 1. The shaft 12 is provided with a fly-wheel (not shown) and the same may be driven by any suitable means. Also mounted on the side frames or plates 1 is a pivot shaft 13 which supports a platen 14 which is adapted to be rocked to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 through the instrumentality of a cam (not shown) on the gear 10 in a well known manner. The rocking movement of the platen 14 is simultaneous with the movement of the frame 3. When the press is operating on a comparatively thin quality of paper, the type in the chase 4 will engage the platen 14, but if the sheet of paper should become misplaced on the platen, the operator, while not preventing the forward movement of the type chase, may prevent the type from touching the platen 14 by a throw off mechanism constructed as follows The shaft 5 is provided with an arm 15 attached to a connecting rod 16 which in turn is attached to a crank 17 on a pivot shaft 18 mounted in the side plates 1. The crank 17 is provided with a slotted extension 18 in which reciprocates a roller 19 mounted on an arm 20. The arm 20 is rigidly attached to a rock shaft 21 journaled in the side plates 1 and provided on its outer end with a crank 22 connected to a lever 23 by a rod 24. When the lever 23 is rocked, the shaft 5 will be partially rotated, and owing to the eccentric position of the pin 6, the frame 3 and the type chase 4 will receive a movement independent of the movement imparted by the crank dials 8, thereby adjusting the opera tive relation between the type and the platen. As a consequence, if the upper end of the lever 23 is thrown rearward, the type in the chase 4 will be prevented from striking the platen 14 on the forward movement of the frame 3.
WVhen it is desired to print on thick material, such as cardboard or bound sheets, the frame 3 and chase 4 are permanently and rigidly held in a position to prevent the type from striking the platen; the distance between the type and the platen, at the end of the forward movement of the frame 3 being equal to the thickness of the stock desired to be printed upon. The parts are locked in this position by the following mechanism: The arm 20 is provided with a segment 26 which rocks with the shaft 21, and which is engaged by a bifurcated clamp 27 mounted on the pivot shaft 18. The said clamp 27 is provided with a set screw 28 by means of which the segment 26 may be adjusted in any set position. As a consequence the operative relation between the type and the platen can be adjusted to suit a certain thickness of stock, and can be held in this position by means of the clamp 27 and the segment 26. It will beseen, that, when said clamp engages said segment, the throw off mechanism is out of use, or inoperative as the lever 23 cannot be rocked. It may be stated, however, that when the machine is adjusted to print on heavy stock the type will not touch the platen in any event and the use of the throw off mechanism is not necessary. When it is desired to print on thin paper, and the use of the throw off mechanism is desired, the clamp 27 is de tached from the segment 26 and is thrown back or shifted to one side where it will perform 110 function.
In the drawings we have shown our invention applied to one form of Gordon press, but it will be understood that it is equally adapted to any type of job press.
We claim:
In a machine of the type specified, the combination with a platen, a movable type carrying frame in operative relation with said platen, an eccentric pin-carrying shaft mounted in said frame, and means including a segment which is adapted to rock said shaft to adjust the operative relation between the type and the platen, of a bifurcated clamp adapted to engage said segment and to hold said shaft in a set position.
