To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, Hoi/inn E. Swnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutlery- Grinders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the/same.
This invention relates to improvements in cutlery grinders and more particularly to the means for holding the cutlery in proper position for grinding.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of cutlery holding mechanism having means whereby a knife, scissor blade or other form of cutlery may be held in position against the grindstone.
Another object is to provide a holder of this character which may be adjustably secured to any suitable support.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View, partly in section of my improved holder anda portion ofa grindstone, showing one way in which a knife blade is supported for grinding; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing another way in which the blade may be supported; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing a scissor blade held in position for grinding; Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the holder and grindstone.
Referring more particularly to the drawlings, l denotes a grindstone which may be i of any suitable construction and which may be supported and operated in any suitable manner. y My improved supporting mechanism comprises a standard 2 having a right angularly formed longitudinally slotted base 3 in which is arranged a clamping screw 4 whereby the base and standard may be adjust-ably secured to any suitable support.

manner in which the blade is engaged with the seat 7 and held against the grindstone is clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
vIn Fig. 2 of the drawing, is shown the manner in which the blade is held by the supporting surface or rest 5 when engaged by the grindstone. `When the rest :3 is employed, the holder is preferably adjusted to bring the lower end of said surface into engagement with the hollow central portion of the stone and when in this position, the angle' of the surface or resty 5 serves as a gage and holds the edge of the blade against the stone.
lVhen the holder is employed for supporting a scissor blade, said holder is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and the blade is engaged with the supporting surface or rest. 6 so that the edge ofthe blade will engage the side of the stone at the proper angle. When using the device for holding a scissor blade, l preferably employ a blade clamping spring 8, one end of which is secured to the underside of the rest G, while the other end is adapted to bear against the scissor blade and to clamp the same into engagement with the rest G, as shown. In addition to the clamping spring 8, l also preferably'employ a spring 9 for moving and holding the blade against the grindstone, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The spring 9 is formed from a single piece of wire bent into approximately lJ-shaped form. The terminals of the wire are attached to the outer face of the standard and are bent to form coils 10, while the side pieces of the spring straddle the upper end of the standard and the spring 8 and are adapted to engage and hold a tool against t-he grind stone.
By means of a holding device constructed as herein shown and described, a. knife or scissor blade may be securely held in roper position for engagement with a grin stone, whereby a keen, even edge will be formed on the blade.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention willbe readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details ofconstruction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the'appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: i

A tool holder of the class described comprising a supporting standard having portions of its outer end formed to provide a pair of inwardly inclined cutlery supporting surfaces which are disposed at di erent inclinations and are adapted to support different forms of tool blades in position for grinding, a longitudinally slotted base for vthe standard and a clamping screw passingthrough the slot of the base for holding the standard in adjusted position.
