To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM W. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Durham and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Time- Controlled Gas-Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a time controlled gas lighting device, the object being to provide a device which is especially adapted to be used for lighting street-gas-lamps and turning the same out at a predetermined time.
Another object of my invention is to provide novel means for operating the turning plug of the valve casing so as to open and close the same whereby the gas will be allowed to pass to the burner or cut off as the case may be.
Another object of my invention is to provide the valve with a by-pass so that a certain amount of gas will pass to the burner so as. to form a pilot.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clock work for operating the valve which is controlled by a governor, whereby the speed of the same can be readily adjusted so that the valve will be operated at the desired time.
Another object of the invention is to connect the operating rod to the operating lever in such a manner that the movement of the turning plug can be regulated so as to control the flow of gas through the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :-Figure 1 is a front view of my improved device, the casing being broken away to show the clock-work. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the casing being broken away, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the turning-plug and operating lever detached.
Referring to the drawing, A indicates a lamp-post through which extends the gas supplying pipe B which is provided with a burner C at its upper end, and a valve-casing D in which is mounted a turning-plug E for controlling the flow of gas through i the same. Secured to the post is a casing F,
in which is mounted a clock-work G which is controlled by a fan-governor H which is formed of flexible blades which can be expanded or contracted, so as to increase or decrease the speed of the clock-work. While I have shown and described a fangovernor, it is of course understood that any suitable form of governor can be used.
Mounted on the winding spindle G of the clock-work is a disk I provided with oppositely disposed cam lips I for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
The casing is provided with a hinged door F having an opening in alinement with the winding spindle G of the clock-work so that a key can be readily inserted in the same so as to wind the clock-work.
Secured to the rear wall of the casing is a bracket J provided with an apertured arm J within the casing, and an apertured arm 2 arranged above the same, in which is slidably mounted an operating rod K which extends through an opening formed in the easing, and is provided with a screw-threaded lower end, on which is mounted a bifurcated head L, in the bifurcation of which is mounted an anti-friction roller M adapted to rest on the periphery of the disk I, the arms of the head formed by the bifurcation extending down over the sides of the disk for holding the head on the disk for the purpose hereinafter described.
Secured on the stem of the turning-plug is a sleeve N by a set-screw N the sleeve being provided with ratchet-teeth N adapted to be engaged by a pivoted pawl O of an operating lever O, which is loosely mounted on the stem and is held in position by a sleeve P. The operating lever O is provided with a series of face-openings 0 through which the angled upper end K of the oper ating rod K is adapted to extend, the end being threaded on which is mounted a nut for securing the rod therein and it will be seen that by placing the rod in the difierent openings, the movement of the turning plug can be controlled so as to regulate the flow of gas through the same. A link Q provided with weights Q is mounted in the end of the operating lever for drawing the same downwardly, as will be hereinafter fully described.
The turning plug is provided with an ordinary transverse bore which registers with the inlet and outlet ports of the valve-casing and the bore isconnected by grooves E formed in the periphery of the same, so as to form bypasses which allow a small amount of gas to pass around the same when the turning-plug is in a cut-ofi position, so that the pilot will be kept firmly at all times, whereby the burner will be ignited when the valve is opened.
The operation is as follows :The clock work is wound up, and the governor adjusted so as to regulate the speed of the clockwork, which in turn regulates the speed of the disk, and as the roller of the head of the operating rod passes over the same, it will drop after it passes over one of the cam-lips, which will draw the operating lever downwardly, so as to open the valve and allow the gas to pass to the burner, and as the head rides up on the other cam lip, it will force the operating lever upwardly so that the pawl will catch into one of the ratchet-teeth of the sleeve secured on the stem of the valve, and as the head drops after riding over the cam-lip it will draw the operating lever downwardly which will cut oil the gas, leaving the gas-pilot still burnin Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a post, of a supply-pipe extending through said post provided with a burner at its upper end, a valve-casing arranged in said pipe, a turning plug mounted in said valve-casing provided with by-passes for supplying gas to a pilot carried by the burner, a casing secured to the post, a clockwork arranged in said casing, a governor for controlling said clock-work, a disk provided with cam-lips secured to the winding spindle of the clock-Work, a bifurcated head mounted on said disk, and an operating rod carried by the head for operating said turning plug.
2. In a time controlled gas lighting device, the combination with a gas supplying pipe provided with a burner at its upper end, of a valve casing carried by said pipe, a turning plug mounted in said casing provided with a stem, a sleeve secured on said stem by a set-screw provided with ratchet.

3. In a time controlled gas lighting device, the combination with a gas supplying pipe provided with a burner at its upper end, of a valve casing carried by said pipe, a turning plug mounted in said casing provided with a by-pass and having an outwardly projecting stem, a sleeve fixed on said stem provided with ratchet teeth, an operating lever loosely mounted upon said stem provided with a pawl for engaging said ratchet teeth, a link carrying weights connected to the outer end of said lever, an operating rod adjustably connected to said lever, a bifurcated head secured on the lower end of said operating rod, a roller mounted in said bifurcated head, a clock work carrying a disk provided with cam lips over which said bifurcated head works, and a governor for controlling said clock work.
