DENTAL ADVERTISING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Max R. SLoUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covina, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dental Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to advertising devices, and particularly to an advertising device as applied to the purposes of dentistry.

The object of the invention is to produce a head in imitation of the human head and having mechanism within the head for pre senting a plurality of rows of teeth within a partially opened mouth in a natural position. The arrangement is such that certain rows of the teeth are decayed or in bad condition, whereas other rows are in perfect form, the improvement being supposed to have arisen from the advertised dental processes.

In the annexed drawing which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the advertising device constructed according to my invention, the mechanism in the device being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan of the mechanism representing the same as removed from the head and showing the wiring. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

presenting a face 5 showing a partially opened mouth 6. In this month behind the lower lip, a fixed row 7 of lower teeth is presented. Within the head 4 I provide a standard 8 having a vertical adjustable stem 9. This standard 8 and the head 4 are all suitably mounted upon a base plate 10. At the upper end of the stem 9 an eye 11 is formed to which a yoke 12 is attached by means of a similar eye 13, formed in an adjustable shank 14, which shank is attached to the upper side of the yoke 12 as indicated in Fig. 2. This yoke 12 has oppositely disposed forks 15, the ends of which receive rotatably a shaft 16, which passes centrally through a carrier or drum 17. cated in Fig. 1 to facilitate the removal of the drum when desired. On the shaft 16 at one side a ratchet wheel 19 is rigidly attached and on this side of the device the yoke 12 is formed with a downward extension or arm 20, near the lower end of which a rocker 21 is pivotally mounted. This rocker has an arm 22, which extends upwardly and carries a pawl 23. This pawl extends forwardly and through a guide ear 24 formed on the yoke as indicated in Fig. 1. The point of the pawl 23 engages the upper side of the ratchet wheel and is adapted to rotate it when the rocker 21 is rocked. The adjacent fork of the yoke 12 is also provided with a downwardly extending arm 25, which is provided with a detent 26, which normally engages the ratchet wheel 19 by means of a spring 27, which is attached to the butt end of the pawl and also attached to the arm 20, thus preventing a backward rotation of the drum. A similar spring 28 connects the pawl 23 with the arm 22 and tends to hold the end of this pawl in engagement with the ratchet wheel. On the side of the pawl 23 a stop or stop pin 29 is provided, which limits the forward movement of the pawl by striking the guide 24, and a similar pin 30 on the under side of the pawl strikes the forward side of the guide 24 and limits the backward movement of the 'pawl 23. The rocker 21 has a short arm 31,

from the end of which a string of soft wire 32 is suspended. To the lower end of this string an armature 33 is attached. This armature is normally suspended over the upper end of the core 34 of an electro-magnet 35. This electro-magnet is formed of a plurality of plates 36 having the form shown in Fig. 3 and held together by a light frame 37 of brass or similar material. The middle portion of each plate 36 presents a tongue, and these tongues unite toform the aforesaid core 34, about which the exciting coil 38 is formed. At a suitable point on the base plate 10, a flash light 39 is mounted, and this flash light is connected by circuit wires 40 and 41 with a knife switch 42, which is closed when the device is in operation.

The drum 17 is of greatest diameter on its central plane so as to give it a bulged or slightly curved contour on its face to give the proper form to the row of teeth.. Upon the face of the drum a plurality of rows 43 and 44 of teeth are attached so as to simulate the upper row of teeth. These difierent rows of teeth alternate, there being rows of good teeth or teeth in a good state of preservation and other rows of decayed teeth.

The coil 38 is connected by conductors 45 with the switch conductors 46, with which the levers 47 of the knife switch cooperate so that when the switch is closed the current may flow through the lamp 39 and the coil 38. The lamp 39 is of an intermittent or flashing type, that is, it has mechanism in its plug which operates in such a way that after the lamp has burned a predetermined period of time the contact will be broken at the lamp and the circuit will be opened. At every flash or lighted period of the lamp the fiow of the current in the coil 38 energizes the electro-magnet 35 and the armature 33 is pulled downwardly. This rocks the rocker 21 forwardly so that the pawl 23 rotates the drum 17. The drum is arranged so that the pawl 23 will leave it each time so that one of the rows of teeth 33 or 34 will be exposed through the partly opened mouth 6 of the figure and with the teeth in the natural position which they would have in real life with respect to the mouth lips and lower teeth.

The advertising device constructed as described, may be used at night as a window or show case display. When the flash light is on it lights up the figure and also the rows of teeth exposed at the mouth. But the dei vice is intended to be used particularly in the day time, in which case instead of using the well known intermittent flash light I may use any other suitable device for inter mittently cutting off the electric current.

Special attention is called to the adjustable shank 14 for supporting the yoke 12. This shank is threaded into a boss 48 on the rear side of the yoke and a checknut 49 is provided in the form of a winged nut. A set screw 50 is provided in connection with the standard 8 for supporting the stem 9 at different elevations. In this way the ratchet drum may be very nicely adjusted with respect to the mouth of the figure. In addition to this there is a possible angular adjustment at the eyes 13 which are connected by a thumb bolt 51, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described, comprising a figure in the form of a head presenting a mouth opening, rows of teeth supported within said mouth, and means for moving said rows of teeth so as to present the same in succession at said opening.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a figure in the form of a head having a partially opened mouth, a drum rotatably mounted within said head adjacent to said mouth, teeth attached to said drum and arranged in rows, and means for rotating said drum with a step by step movement to display said rows of teeth in succession at said mouth.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a figure in the form of a head having a partially opened mouth, a drum rotatably mounted within said head adjacent to said mouth, teeth attached to said drum and arranged in rows, means for rotating said drum with a step by step movement to display said rows of teeth in succession at said mouth, and means for adjusting the heights of said drum and the position of the axis thereof.

4. A device of the class described, comprising a figure in the form of a hollow head having a partly opened mouth, a yoke, means for adjusting said yoke, a drum rotatably mounted in said yoke, means for giving said drum a step by step rotation, and a plurality of teeth arranged in rows and adapted to be presented in succession at said mouth opening.

5. An advertising device, comprising a figure in the form of a hollow head, a yoke, means for supporting and adjusting said yoke within said head, a drum rotatably mounted in said yoke, a plurality of teeth carried by said drum and adapted to be presented in succession at said mouth, a rocker having a fixed pivotal support, means for rotating said drum from said rocker, and an electromagnet for actuating said rocker.
