Be it known that I, GEORGE \V. BEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Three Oaks, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Combined Match-Safe and Cigar- Cut-ter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to a combined match safe and cigar cutter, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character having a reciprocating plate adapted to pick one match at a time from a receptacle and to place the same upon a pair of arms where said match is carried outwardly by the power of gravity.

Another object of the invention is to provide a match safe of the character described having a knife mounted on the inner face of the covering and adapted to be automatically actuated by the mechanism which operates the delivery of the match.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the match-safe. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device showing the top removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reciprocating plate. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail plan view of the means for actuating the striker. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the reciprocating plate and the arms 11. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the knife. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view through the knife.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a rectangular box having a top 2. Beneath the top 2 is two portions or supports 3extending from side to side and through which supports an axle & passes on either side of which is a spur wheels 5. Arranged adjacent to said spur wheel is a plate 6, which plate is provided with arms 7, provided with teeth 8. On either side of the support 8 is a pair of guides 9 which hold said arms 7 in engagement with said spur wheels. The plate 6 is provided with a pair of slots 10 in which are mounted the free ends of a pair of arms 11. When the wheels 5 are rotated the plate 6 is raised upward and the U-shaped recess 12 formed in the top of said plate carries a match upward out of the V-shaped compartment 13. Then when the plate is lowered, the arms 11 lift the match out of the recess 12 and delivers the same into a chute 14 which deposits the match on the top 2 where the same can be conveniently grasped. The chute 14 is provided with recesses 14 (there only being one shown, particular reference to Fig. 1) which partially receive portions of the arms 11, in order to limit the downward fall of the arms. The axle 1 is provided with ahandle 15 which operates in a guide 16 mounted on the side of box 1.

On the inner face of the top 2 is an L- shaped plate 17 on which is mounted a knife 18, which knife operates and guides 9. The knife 18 is provided with a downward projection 20 to which a spring 21 is connected, which spring is also connected to the plate 17. The top 2 is provided with an opening 22 in which the end of a cigar can be inserted when the knife 18 is pressed forward by means hereinafter explained for clipping the end thereof. One end of the axle 1 is provided with a rigid arm 23 which, when the handle 15 is actuated, strikes against the downward projection 20 of the knife which causes the cigar to be clipped, as will be readily understood. When the cigar is clipped, as above explained, the knife is returned to its initial position by means of the spring 21. The force of the spring 21 is limited by a stop 24, as clearly shown in the drawings. The arm 23 is provided with a U-shaped attachment 25,.which attachment is rigidly connected thereto. Connected with this attachment 25 is a' pivoted arm 26, which arm is provided with a slot 27 as clearly shown in the drawings. On one end of the box 2 is provided a bell 28 which is provided with a striker 29. The inner end of the striker 29 is engaged by the pivoted arm 26 when the lever or handle 15 is operated. When the handle 15 is operated, at a certain point in its operation, the arm 26 slips off the striker 29 which having a spring 30 causes the striker to ring the bell 28, as

will be clearly understood.

It will be seen that my invention is simple, durable and inexpensive and that it is capable of delivering a single match out of a collection on the top of the box in a simple and eflicient manner, and that the above can be done simultaneously with the clipping of a cigar. It will also be seen that this device is not only one of great utility but that the simplicity and perfection of its mechanical construction Will prove valuable in a cigar store by reason of itsinteresting and fascinating qualities.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is A device of the class described, comprising a support having a match compartment, a reciprocating plate mounted in said support, said plate having inclined arms formed integral therewith and arranged on each side of said support, said arms having teeth,

guides mounted on said support on the opposite side of each arm, spur Wheels adapted to engage said teeth for raising and lowering said plate, said plate being capable of transmitting a match from said compartment to the top of said device.
