Description
SAMUEL F. ESTELL, OF RICHMOND. INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 96,096, datefl- October` 26, 1869.
IMPROVBD FOLDING SCHOOL-DESK.
The Schedulerefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Escrima ot' Richmond, in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding School-Desks; and I do hereby declare that- -my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Similar let-ters, in the dierent ligures, refer to corresponding parts.
The book-boxA is mainly supported by the braces I, that are pivoted to said box, and tothe standards F.
VThe pins Gr project through slots B, in the ends of the book-box, and serve to guide the same in its revolution, and also prevent its moving too far in either direction.
The book-box is secured in position, for use, by a lever or cam, O, that is pivotedA at L, and extends upward, engaging with a pin or lug, B, on the end of the hook-box.
When the lever or cam C is disengaged from the pin P, the book-box is allowed to revolve, the pins G following the slots B until the whole is folded, as shown in-fig. 2; and when again the book-box is drawn up in position for use, it is automatically locked in that position by the lever or cam C, which is raised by the pin P, and falls behind the same at the proper time.
In the arrangement of the folding-seat, E represents one of the two arms on which the boards or slats forming the seat are secured.
The arms E are bolted to the standards at J, and are supported for use by the lugs K, that engage with 'shoulders R on the said arms.
D represents a friction-plate, that is held against the inside of the arm E by the bolt J, and is prevented from turning by the lug K on the standard that fits an opening in said plate. By means of this plate, a broad bearing is produced, the friction of which, in operating the seat, may be increased or diminished by turning the nut on the bolt J J' also, the said nut is prevented from becoming loosened in the operation Ofraisiug or lowering the seat, because of the plate D, against which it is held, being prevented from turning by the lug K.'
By means of the .friction-bearing thus produced, we may sov adjust the hinge as to hold the seat at any angle, thereby obviating any unnecessary noise fromv falling seats.
Having thus fully described my said invention,
What I claim, and desire to .secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. 'Ihebook-box A, provided with slots B, in combination with pins G, and pivoted braces I, constructed and arranged to operate as herein described, for the purpose specified.
.2. In combination'wvith the above, the automatic locking-device C, when arranged to operate as herein described, for the purpose specified. y
3. Ibe friction-plate D, arms E, and lugs R,'for the purpose specified, in combination with a school-desk,
constructed and arranged to operate as herein described.
