of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to `a piston valve particularly adapted for use in a vacuum system, lsuch as is usedfor exhausting incandescent lamp bulbs, and'has for its ob ject the production of a valve, absolutely .preve t leakage .of air into the system. f
Referring to -the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is al sectional elevation of the valve; and Fig. 2 i's a plan view.
As shown in the drawings 2 is a casing within which is contained av piston -valve 3.
At the lower end of this casing is an accurately fitted flanged plug 4, secured to the casing by asoldered joint 45.l Extending through the plug and an upwa/ rd extension 6 thereof is a passage 7. Screwed into a registering opening in the bottomot' the plug is a pipe S, also having a soldered joint 9, by
which leakage is prevented at that point.
Surrounding the extension 6, is an annular' recess 14. to such a distance that passage ot" air through the conduit t is, m 'closing the valve, cut oti' slightly in advance ofthe e11-4 gagcment o the lower edge of the valve with the mercury 16. By this arrangement of parts, the mercury. 16, placed in the bottom of the valve chamber lis prevented from being blown or carried over into `the passage T.
The mercury inthe chamber is of such depth that when the piston-valve is fully closed, it will rise above the plane of `the meeting parts, and thus afford an additional seal.
