To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, MAUD M. BILLINGSLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Drinking-Cup, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cups, and especially to drinking cups which are used at out-door drinking fountains and other public places.

It has for its object to provide a cup with a cover, which is adapted when the cup is not in use to cover the top of the cup and exclude all foreign matter from the interior of the cup, and when it is desired to use the cup, may be displaced or uncovered by aslight tilting of the cup, and thus permit access to the interior of the cup. To carry out this object, the cover is provided on its under side with a guide member adapted to slide in a slot provided in the wall of the cup so as to guide, retain, and limit the movement of the cover, when the cup is or is not in use, as the case may be.

The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described by reference to the accompanying drawings and set forth in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cup with the cover closing the top. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section, showing the cover displaced, in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking at the under side of the cover, showing the guide member.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings, 4 designates a cup provided with a handle 5, the whole being of any well known construction. The open top of the cup is adapted to be closed by a suitable cover in the shape of a disk-like plate of the same configuration as the opening and of a diameter slightly greater. The upper turned or wired edge of the cup serves as a support for the cover. The cover is provided on its under side with a guide member in the form of a metal strip 8 which is spaced a short distance therefrom. Said strip is bent backwardly and attached at its front end to the under side of the cover, at 9, then extends rearwardly through a narrow slot 10 in the wall of the cup, is then brought up around and over the edge of the cover an equal distance throughout its length, being substantially parallel there,

The front or outer end, 9, of the strip, is attached to the under side of the cover short of the peripheral edge of the latter, and is extended diametrically across the cover, the two ends of the strip forming stops to limit the sliding movement of the cover and confine it in place on the cup at all times. The cup is further provided near its brim with small openings 12 which permit the free circulation of air through the cup when the cover is in a closed position.

From the above description, and assuming that the cover is in a closed position, it will be seen that if the cup be taken by the handle and tilted rearwardly, the cover will slide by its own weight from ofi the top of the cup, thus permitting access to the interior of the cup. To operate the cover from an open to a closed position, it is only necessary to tilt the cup forwardly and thecover will automatically slide over the top. The cover being of a diameter in excess of the diameter of the opening of the cup, it will be readily seen that this cover, when in a closed position, will exclude allparticles of dust and disease germs that might lodge in the cup if it were left uncovered, in a place where the air is full of such impurities.

In carrying out this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise form, size, proportion or the details of construction, as the same may be varied to suit the conditions of use and service.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent/ is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a cup having a handle, of a sliding cover for the same, and means for connecting the cover and the cup so as to permit the cover to he slid off the top of the cup and supported at one side thereof by simply tilting the cup, said means being connected to the cup adjacent the handle so that the cover slides across the top of the handle.

2. The combination with a cup provided with a handle and a slot in one of its walls,

a cover for said cup resting loosely upon the top thereof and provided on its underside With aguide, which is adapted to slide through said slot and guide and limit the movement of said cover so as to permit the cover to be slid off and onto the top of the cup by merely tilting the latter and without touching the cover itself.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a cup having a handle and a slot in its wall adjacent the handle, a cover for said cup having a diameter in excess of the cup, a guide on said cover consisting of a strip secured at its forward end to the under side of said cover, extending rearwardly diametrically across the cover through said slot in the wall of the cup, then bent around the edge of said cover and fastened to the upper side thereof.

4. In combination with the cup having a handle and a slot in the wall of the cup adjacent the handle, a cover for the top of the cup, a guide strip arranged parallel with the cover and extending diametrically across the same, the ends of the strip being secured to the cover and forming stops to limit the movement of the cover and also serving to retain the cover in place in either its open or closed positions, said strip passing through and Working in the slot provided in the wall of the cup.

'5. The combination with a cup having a handle and a turned upper edge with a slot in the wall of the cup immediately below said edge, a cover consisting of a plain disk having a diameter greater than the cup and adapted to fit loosely upon the upper edge thereof, and a guide strip fastened to the underside of the cover and having its ends forming stops and passing through the slot provided in the wall of the cup, whereby the cover may be slid off and onto the top of the cup by merely tilting the latter.
