HAT-HANGER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE SMiTH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorndike, in the county of l-Iampdenand State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat hangers.

The object of my invention is to provide a neat, ornamental hat holder or hanger arranged to be secured to a wall, chair back, or stand, to removably receive a stiff brimmed hat.

With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front View of a hat hanger embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a side view disclosing the position of a hat in dotted outline, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is an enlarged detached detail of the spring held clip as used in my invention, Fig. 5 in an enlarged detached detail of the rear supporting plate, Fig. 6 is an enlarged detached detail of the front supporting plate, Fig. 7 is a rear view of the completed hat hanger.

In carrying out the object of my invention, I employ a carrying pin 1 having the projecting threaded stem 33 this stem being of a diameter less than the diameter of the pin so as to provide the stop shoulder 34. Held to this threaded stem 33, and upon the shoulder 34, is the rear plate 2, oblong in outline and provided with the two oppositely positioned semicylindrical channelforming flanges 6, these channel members being held in parallel spaced relation. As clearly disclosed in Fig. 5, each channel forming flange (3 has a bottom web 8 and a top web 7, these webs 7 being provided with Centrally this rear plate 1s provided with the pin opening 5 of a size to receive the threaded stem 33, while above Specification of Letters Patent.

and below I further provide the ear openings 4; as clearly disclosed. As shown, these channel-forming flanges 6 project beyond the upper edge of the plate proper. This plate is made of any suitable sheet metal.

In connection with the rear plate 2, I employ a counterpart equiformed front plate 3, having the edge flanges 13 which are semicylindrical in cross section, these flanges 13 being also provided with bottom webs S and top webs 7, these webs also having the seats 2. This front plate 3 is arranged for coaction with the rear plate 2, and when connected the edge webs 6 and 13 form cylindrical channels as clearly disclosed. This front plate is also provided with a centrally positioned pin opening 14 and above and be low has the ears 9 arranged to enter the openings 4:, these cars being arranged to be clenched to securely fasten these two plates. Slidably held within the channels formed by means of these plates 2 and 3 are the guide stems 15 extending from the clip used to secure the hat brim. These guide stems 15 are provided with the heads 16 at their ends and each is bent to provide a short contact stem portion 17 from which the stems are continued in the stub sections 19 extending parallel to the stem portions 15 and from these the member is directed outward to form the straight bar 20 held parallel to the stems 15 and at right angles to the stems 15 as clearly disclosed. Held upon these stems 15 and against the upper web portion 7 and the head 16, are the helical springs 23 which tend to normally hold the clip in protracted position.

Held to the end of the threaded stem 33, is the face plate 10 having a threaded opening 12 within which the stem 33 threads, this face plate being provided below with the supporting stud 11 having the head 10, this cross head 10 being arranged in a vertical position as shown. The face plate 10 is held against the channel forming flanges 13 of the front plate 3 as disclosed. In its normal position, the stem portions 7 contact with the upper edge of the face plate.

The operation of the device is very simple. It is of course understood that this hanger or holder is especially adapted to support stiff brimmed hats, and these are readily attached in carrying a portion of the brim below the clip bar 20 and then forcing the clip upward so that the opposite edge of the hat brim may be brought into contact with the stud 11, so that the hat is clamped between the clips and the stud. This stud 11 is preferably provided with a suitable elastic covering, and is further arranged to serve as a coat hanger. A hat held to this hanger can be instantly removed, and while not in use, the hanger presents a neat and sightly appearance.

Having thus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a carrying pin, a rear plate provided with two semicylindrical edge channels, held in parallel spaced relation, each having a bottom forming web and a top web with a centrally positioned seat, a front plate having semicylindrical edge channels with top and bottom webs, said channels registering with said first mentioned channels, a Wire clip having two guide stems slidably held within said channels, springs carried by said stem to hold said clip in a protracted position, and a carrying stud secured to said front plate.

2. The combination with a carrying pin, of a rear plate carried by said pin provided with two semicylindrical edge channels held in parallel spaced relation, each having a bottom forming web and a top web with a centrally positioned seat, a front plate having semicylindrical edge channels for coaction with said, first mentioned channels, a wire clip having two guide stems slidably held within said channels and said seat, springs carried by said stems to hold said clip in a protracted position, a face plate carried by said pin, and a stud carried by said face plate and held proximal to said clip.

3. A hat hanger having in combination, a carrying pin, a sheet metal rear plate provided with two semicylindrical edge channels held in parallel spaced relation, each having a bottom forming web and a top web with a centrally positioned seat, a sheet metal front plate having semicylindrical edges arranged for coaction with said edge channels, clenching ears carried by said plates to secure the same in juxtaposition, a wire clip having two extending guide stems held within said channels, springs upon said wire stems to hold said clip in a retracted position, and a stud held proximal to said clip all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
