IMPROVEMENT IN' ROTARY COULTERS.
The Schedule referred to ign these Letters Patent and making part cf the same,
. To all whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known Athat I, FLAvIUs J. UNDERWOOD, of Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Coulters; and I do hereby declare that the bllowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accoxnpanying drawings, making part of this' specitieation, and to the letters ot reference marked thereoinlike letters indicating like parts wherever they-occur.'
To enable others skilledtin the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to rotary coulters for plows; and
It consists in a -novel manner of constructing t-he hub, whereby it can be screwed. together, and made to clamp and hold the coulter-blades, as hereinafter more fully explained.

In constructing rotary coulters, ,it is necessary to secure them to the shaft nponwhich they revolve, in such a manner that the blade shall revolve in a true vertical plane.
Heretofore this has been accomplished in various ways, but always with considerable trouble and expense, and more or less imperfectly.
The object of my present inventionis to provide a simple, cheap, and etiicient means oi securing the blade, so that it shall be held firmly and truly in posi; tion.
To accomplish this, I make a cast-iron hub, of two parts, B and C, ofthe form represented in the drawi- 1n s.
glhese parts consistof a circular plate, each, having on their exterior sides a projecting hub, F, which is made witha series of angles or flat' faces on 'its sides, so as to be readily grasped in aV4 vise or by a wrench, and also with a hole extending centrally through it, for the reception of a shaft, E, as represented in tig'. 1.
One ot-Q'these parts, B, is provided also with a central circular projection, D, on its inner face, as shown in fig. 2, on the exterior of which is formed' a screwthread, as there shown.
The other part, C, is provided with a corresponding socket, having on its inner face a corresponding screwthree d, so that the two parts, B and C, may be screwed together, as represented in iig. 1.
These parts B and C are cast with the screw-threads" ready formed thereon, sothat they can be screwed together just as they come from the mould, thus saving the labor and expense of cutting the threads by machinery, as is usually dune,
It is, however, obvious that this plan of constructing the hub is equally applicable to hubs made either of wrought or cast-iron, and having the threads cut by proper tools, though I prefer to cast them complete, as aboveI stated for the reason that it is cheaper so to do.
`With a hub thus constructed, it is only necessary to form the disk or blade A in the usual style, with its central hole large enough to slip on to the projection D, and after havingplizeed it thereon, screw the two parts, B and C, together, as shown in iig. l, the blade A being tightly clamped between the flanges ofthe two parts, and held firmly and truly in position, the flanges serving also to brace and st-iifen the blade at its central portion.
Theseiianges may be made to extend as far out on the blade A as desired, and byA this means a very thin blade may be used, thus saving material, and labor in, grinding it to an edge.
The hub may be made faston thev shaft E, the lat ter turning in its bearings in the stem that supports it, or the shaft may be made fast in its stem, and the hub be arranged to turn loosely on the shaft, as pre., fel-red.
In this nia-nner l construct a very simple, cheap, and eicient device, admirably adapted to the purpose for which it is intended.
Having thus described my invention,
A rotary Coulter, having a hub, composed of the' two parts, B and C, constructed so as to screw together andclasp the blade A between them, substantially as described.
