To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, REDMOND J. Mo- GRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Shaft-Hangers and Belt-Tighteners, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in combination shaft-hangers and belt-tighteners, the object being to provide, in a hanger depending from a ceiling, means for carrying a counter-shaft and a plurality of idler pulleys, one of which is adjustable.
A further object of my invention is to arrange idler pulleys and the drive-belt from a main drive-pulley to the countershaft pulley in such a manner that said counter-shaft and said drive-pulley may rotate in opposite directions without crossing the drive-belt.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in a shaft-hanger suitably attached to and depending from a ceiling, bearings in said hanger for a counter-shaft and an idler pulley, and a horizontally disposed slot in saidv hanger in which a shaft carrying a second idler pulley is slidably mounted.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying` drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved shaft-hanger and belt-tightener in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line :1sof Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the shaft-hanger, and 2 the ceiling to which it is attached. Slots 3 are provided in order that the hanger may be adjusted to the proper position before the.
screws 4 are tightened. The counter-shaft 5 is journaled in a bearing in the hanger which is provided with the cap 6, and the pulley 7 is rigidly secured to said countershaft. The drive-pulley S is secured to the drive-shaft 9 and is adaptedto rotate in the direction indicated. An idler pulley 10 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 11 which is secured in the frame 1, and the idler pulley 12 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 13 which is adjustably mounted in the slots 14. The pulley 12 is provided with reduced extensions 15 to maintain the central position of the main body portion of said pulley. Rectangular plates 16 are provided with perforations and are loosely mounted on the shaft 13. The plates 16 are arranged on either side of the slotted portions 14, the inner plates being adapted to abut the eX- tensions 15 in the pulley 12, and the outer plates to be held in position by means of the nuts 17. Blocks 18 are slidably mounted in the slots 14 and are perforated to receive the shaft 18. An adjusting screw 19 is provided on either' side of the hanger and the latter is tapped to receive the same. The blocks 18 are adapted to slide along the slots 14 and to tighten the belt 2O when the screw 19 is tightened against the tension of said belt. A lock-nut 21 is provided on the screw 19 to secure the adjustment of the same.
Vhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved shafthanger and belt-tightener, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is:
In a device of the class described, a pair of similar hanger brackets, each of said brackets comprising a base having slots to receive bolts for securing the device to the ceiling and a depending portion, said depending portion being provided with a hori- Zontally disposed slot adjacent its upper end and parallel with the slots in said base portion, a block slidably mounted in each of said slots, a screw threaded through the end of the bracket and impinging against its respective block, a pulley shaft having its ends mounted in said blocks, a pulley on said shaft having reduced ends, bearings formed on said brackets adjacent said screws and in a plane below the same, a counter-shaft mounted in said bearings and a pulley on said shaft, and an idler pulley and a shaft for the same having bearings in the lower end of said brackets below the plane of said counter-shaft, in coinbination name to this -specification in the presence of with a driven pulley and a belt passing tvvo subscribing Witnesses. l
