WRIGHT sIITH, or sT. LOUIS', MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 96,046, dated October 1 9, 1869.
IMPROVBD SUPERHEATING-DEVCE FOR STEAM. OTHER GENERATORS.
The Schedule referred to in theseLetters Patent and making part of the same To all' whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WRIGHT SMITH, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain newand useful Improved Apparatus for Superheating Steam and other purposes; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full and clear descriptiin thereof, reference being had to the accompanying thereon.
'.lhis invention relates to the manner of superheating steam by heated air, and to the manner of retlirning the air after its utilization for superheating vto the furnace-chamber, the feature of said invention being applicable to ordinary boilers, and operating with ecolivomy of fnel.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use my said invention, I will now more fully describe the same, referring herein to the accompanying- Figure 1*, as a sectional elevation; to
Figure 2, as a front View of an ordinary stationary boiler and'fnrnace, with an attachment of the devices referring more especially to this invention.
I arrange the boiler A in any of its usual forms, so as to receive heat from the furnace B, the gases of combustion being guided to pass over the bridge-wall C, in the passage 1), to the rear end of the boiler, and enter the fines a, then passing to the front of the boiler to escape by the chimney or smoke-stack D.
It is, however, to be understood that the nature of the special features of this invention do not limit the application thereof to the form of furnaces and ues before described, or to any other specific form.
In connection with said boiler A, by the pipe E, I arrange the superheater F, the same having a number of tubes f, fitted into proper heads at the ends ofthe main cylinder of the superheat-er.
Thus thesteam from the boiler A, passing into the superheat'er, surrounds theues f, and may escape by the steam-pipe G Whenever permitted.
1n order to heat the steam `iu the vessel F, as in the nature of this invention, I arrange the hot-air pipes H about at the top of the furnace B, the same receives air at its outer end, where it terminates in the face wall of the furnace, and passes the air to the rear, and then rises and'ret-urns to a joint with the rear end of the superheater.
rawings, and to the letters of reference marked' YThis air-pipe is, by its position, therefore, subject to the heat of the fuel of the furnace, and especially to the heated products of combustion as they pas's'to-.the rear of the boiler, and the air in said pipe thus be comes intensely heated, and, passing through the iues f, imparts its heat to the steam iu the superheating vessel, to dry the said steam and increaseits expansive force. l
From the superheater the air passes, by a returnpipe, I, to the forward end of the furnace B. The end t of said return-pipe is, however, curved so as to deliver the air in the direct-ionof 4the draught ot' hot' gases from the furnace.
By' this means the pressure produced by the tendency to rise in the hot products of combustion aids the discharge of the air out of the return-pipe I, and the air thus returned to the furnace gives up so much of its heat as remains to the combustion at the furnace, thus utilizing the same very fully.
The return-pipe I may deliver the spent air to the smoke-stack or chimney, aiding the draught therein, butin this arrangement the heat in said ai'r,as discharged, is nt fully utilized.
The said device is, by its simplicity of form and economy of action and construction, adapted formany purposes in the arts.
Thus, when in the use of an ordinary boiler and steam-pipe, water is carried to the engines or to renf dering-tanks for tallow, lards, and so on, by the use of my said superh'eater', the steam may be dried, and the water, which before was wasted, will be utilized;
and lastly, said devices present all the advantagesordinarily achieved by the use of super-heaters.
Having thus fullydescribed my said invention,
1. The furnace B, hot-air pipe H, superheater F, and its tubes f, and the return-pipe I, combined substantially as set forth. i
2. The return-pipe I, arranged to deliver the air to the furnace B, in the direction of the draught of the hot gases in said furnaces, substantially'asset forth.
' WRIGHT SMITH.
