In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appert-ains, to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringto the annexed dra 7ings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and

Figure 2, a plan view-of the machine, the handles being removed.

Figure 3 is a side view of a portion ofthe bedV of the machine, showing the manner of attaching the handles and plow-beams.

A represents the bed of the machine, at the front of which are attached the knives.

One'knife, B, is placed in the centre, and the other two, B' B', one at each side of the frontend of the bed.

The side knives have their cutting-edges turned outward, as shown in fig. 2.

Nea-r the iiont end of the bed A are placed two barrow-teeth, C, pointing downward, and placed opposite the space between the knives B and B'.

In rear of the barrow-teeth, on the upper side of the bed A, is an upright rod, D, pivoted, the upper end of said rod 'being bent at right4 angles.

On this bent portion of the rod D is placed a beam, E, which cau be turned to either side of the machine.

In the beam E is a number of holes, in which are inserted vertical teeth a a.

A rod, F, and chain G, connect the beam E with the'front end of the bed A, the team being hitched to a suitable point on the chain G.

A rope or chain, b, also connects the beam E witlr a cross-beam, I,.conuecting the two handles, so as to be within easy reach of the operator.

By this arrangement-a gauge or marker is obtained for the purpose of making the -rows the same width, and for the horse to come back on, so as to give the operator a better chancel for doing his work, and for the convenient detachment for the operator to change it from side to side, and raise it over stumps and other obstructions without leaving his position or stoppin his horse.

On each side of the bed A, at the rear end, is at' tached a plow-beam, H, which is curved outward and then inward, as seen in iig. 2.

lhe inner ends ofthe plow-beams H H having several holes through which the bolts pass, can be raised or lowered at will on the bed A, thus making the covering-plows penetrate more or less into the ground.

By changing the beams or bars HH, the plows will throw dirt outwardly, and by changing the plows they will form straight plows, to throw dirt both ways.

The handles K K are at their lower ends attached to the bed A, and can be moved back and forth on the same, so as to give the operator more or less room, as may be desired.

At asuitable point the handles are connected by the bar I, and from this latter a bar, L, braces the. handles to the beam A.

The bars L L are adjustable, so that the handles can be raised or lowered to snit the operator.

At the rear end of the. hed A is piv'otcd an open platform, M, which, at itsA rear end, is provided with two arms, projecting downward between which the roller N is pivoted. The platform is for the purpose of applying weight to snit the operator, and enable him to see the corn before it is covered.

'Ihe outer end ofthe platform is, by a rope or chain, c, connected with-the bar I.

On the bed A is placed the coi-inbox O, in the bottom of which the bar (I operates to carrythe corn ontI and drop the saine.

This'bar is provided with an. adjustable slide, c, so as to regnlatethe amountot' corn to be dropped each time.

In the rear side of .the box O, whereV the slide or bar d passes through the saine, is placed an adjustable vertical slide, `[Shaving at its lower end a brush, as seen in g. 1 so as to brush oif any corn that may be on top of the slide or -bar d, and' only allow the required qnantity to pass through.

On the rear side of the box O, exactly over the 4opening leading to the iiurowing-plowP, through which the corn is dropped, is placed a valve, t', which prevents the corn from bouncing olf the slide when the shoulder formed ou the front portion of the bar d strikes the front side of the box. This shoulder, which is shown in iig. l, prevents the bar d from going backward more than a certain distance. f

The bar d may be operated either automatically1 or by hand. For this purpose there is placed on top of the bed A, a suitable distance in front of the box O, a shaft, g, which, at one end, is attached to a bar, le, that extends toward the rear.

The shaft g is` at or about its centre provided with an arm, It', to the upper end of which is pivoted a bar, l.

This bar is pivoted to a lever, mf, the upper end of which is pivoted to a standard, S, 0n the bed A.

The lower end of the lever m is, by a nut, n, connected with the slide or bar 11.1

The point where the bar Z and lever m are pivoted together can be changed in any manner desired, both being provided with a number of holes, through which the pivot-bolt may be passed.

To the arm lc is attached an adjustable strap, o, the other end of' which isfattached to a spring?, as seen in fig. l.

When the machine is in motion, andthe wheel Itl is moving out of one furrow, and consequently raised, the slide or har al is drawn forward by the arrangement of devices just described, and as soon as said wheel drops into the next furrow, the spring p forces the bar .fl to the rear, allowing the corn to be dropped into the Well for a seed- The knives B and B take up the stalks and other trash, and keep the machine to the ground. Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- Y ters Patent, is-.

l. The arrangement of the knives B B and teeth C C, on the front end of the bed A, all substantially as 'shown and` described.

2; The arrangement of the adjustable and ehangeable plow-beams H H and changeable plows .I J, constructed substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

3f The arrangement of the adjustable strap o', connecting the bar hY with the handle K, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

4. The valve i, constructed as described, and for the pulposes set forth.

5. The arrangement of the handles K K, connect- `ing-har I, and bars L L, for the purpose of adjusting the handles in any suitable manner, substantially as herein set forth. E

6. rl'he arrangement of the hed A with handles K K, pivoted plat-form M, `with roller N, wheel R, bar h, slide d, in box O, and devices for operating said slide, rod D, beam E, and teeth a a, all the parts being constructed and operating as specified.
