Description

Ci GABRIELSON.
PAPER FINGER- FOR TYPE WRITIN G MAGHINES.
Patented May 31, 12am.
APPLIOATIOH FILED JUNE 7, 1906 -stamped and firm mm F] a PAPER-FINGER FOR TYPE-WRITENG MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l Cane Gnmnniison, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, thiondaga county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .lFaper-Fingers for Type- /Vriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper holding devices .t'or typewriter carriages and particularly to an improved paper finger adapted to hold a sheet of paper in contact with the platen. while permitting the paper to h-* written upon from one extreme edge to the other. i
The intention is illustrated in the accompanying drawin in which,
Figure It a tront view of a typewriter platen provided with in im n'owd paper lingers; is a sw-tion on the line 2-43 of Fig. l; and Fig. in a front view (it one of the paper lingers detached.
.lteterring to the drawing 1 indicates a platen, 2 the platen shaft, 3 knobs h v which the platen may he turned. l parts which are rigidly connected with the platen carriage and 5 a har connected with the parts -land also fixed relatively to the platen carriage.
All of the abovementioned parts may be of any ordinary or preferred construction as they do not form a. part of the present invention.
Upon the liar 5 are mounted slides (3 which car the paper lingers 7. The slides U are preitrahly constructed of sheet metal bent into the nectssary form. They are provided with an is 8 fitting snugly over and under the bar 53 so that the slide will more on said bar with some slight :t'riction, sntlicient in whicl it may he placed. The lingers 7 are hin 'l to the slide, as shown a t), and sprint, are provided which constantly press the fingers toward the platen. In the upper end of each finger is mounted a pressure roll 11, pretirrahly surfaced with yielding material, such as ruhher, which roll hears upon the platen, due to the tension of the spring 10.
In Fig. 1 it. have shown a sheet. of paper 12 in position. for printing and. held to the platen by the rolls 1.1,. These rolls are pivotaily mounted in ears 13 in otl'set portions 14 of the fingers Specification of Letters Patent. 1

to hold it in any position '5, these portions being offset- 1906. Serial No. 320,639
Thus the right paper linger is ott'set toward. 7 the lett and the left pa er finger is oti'set; to-
ward the right. Eae 1 paper linger is thus adapted to stand outside ot the adjacent margin of the paper sheet. while its roll. is within the margin.
In Fig. l the printing line or the line passing through theprinting point indicated by the heavy dotted line 15; it. will. he seen that the type impressions on this line can be carried to the extreme right and left margins of the sheet of paper without danger of the type striking: the paper lingers, while at the same time the rolls 11 are on the paper and adapted to hold it properlyto the platen.
The paper fingers are provided with handles 16 by means of which they "an be read it moved to any desired position on the inn 5. The lower ed 'cs of the nit-set portion H are preterahly flared a ay from the platen, shown in it 1g. 2, to facilitate the entrance of the upper edge of the paper and the passage of the paper at'ter it has been enguard by the rollers H.
The paper lingers. herein described are a decided in'ipronanent over paper fingers of the usual construction in which the pressure 'rolls are directly above the hinges of the fin get-s while the fingers proper cover the margins of the paper when the rolls are suitably engaged with the paper.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure hy Letters-Patent is,
1. in a typcwriting machine, the combination with the carriage and the platen, of a. paper finger having its support at one side of the printing line and its free end adapted to engage the paper at the other side of the pflltllflg line, the free end of the finger being otlset toward the middle the platen beyond the prii'itingr line, the ott'set portion of the paper linger being flared away from the platen to receive the paper and adapted to hold the paper when the remaining portion of thelinger is beyond the margin of the.
bar arranged adjacent to the platen, and a pair of paper lingers adjustably mounted on said ar, the said her at one side or the inwardly or toward the middle of the platen. l printing line and the ends of said paper fingers upon the other side of said line. and the free ends of the paper fingers being oil'set toward eaeh other beyond the printing line, the ott'set portion'of each paper 'tinger being flared away from the platen to receive the paper and adapted to hold the paper when the remaining portion of each linger heyond the niar in of the paper, whereby the entire width or the paper 1 is exposed at the printing line. while the paper lingers are in operative position.
3. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage and the platen, of a pair of paper fingers ha ving supports adjacent to the platen and below the 1 prmtuig hne and having tree ends above the 1 printing line adapted to engage the margins of the paper, the said paper fingers being ofi'set toward each other at their free ends and the ottset portions being provided with pressure rollers, whereby the printing line is exposed to view tl'iroughout the entire width of thepaper While the paper fingers 1 are in engagement with the margins of the paper. I y
In testimony whereof I athx my signature in presenee of two witnesses.
