UNITED STATES PATENT IFIQE."
GOTTLIEB BEER, OF HANOVER, GERMANY.
CONVERTIBLE RING AND HOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB BEER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hanover, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Rings and Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a portable appliance which can be alternately used as a hook and as a ring, and is adapted to serve for the suspension of clothes, luggage and other articles, and for the coupling of objects with each other, and as a key-ring, temporary chain-link, and for various other purposes to which hooks and rings can be applied.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing', in which the figure is an elevation of the appliance in its annular state, partly in section.
The appliance comprises two U-shaped or substantially U-shaped members a and Z. The limb c of the member a, and the limb Z of the member o are rotatably connected in alinement with each other. The connection may be made by means of a centrally enlarged sleeve f, as shown. The limbs c and Z have flanges g g located within the central enlargement of the sleeve 7. Other means for connecting the sleeves c and Z may be used. The limbs h and z' of the members c and o are also in alinement with each other when the appliance is used as a ring, and may be connected to each other by a slidable sleeve Z. The sleeve Z is provided with a plate-spring m and can be freely pushed along the limbs L and z'.
For converting the annular appliance into a hook the limbs i1, and c' are disconnected from each other, and the members a and Z) are then rotated relatively to each other about the axes of the limbs c and d, until the shape of the appliance is substantially Specification of Letters Patent.

that of the letter S. The end p of the limb It is pointed so that it can be insertedinto a wall, tree-trunk or other support, to enable the hook to be used for suspension purposes.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A convertible ring and hook comprising two U-shaped members the limbs of one being alinable with the limbs of the other and each being provided with a flange at one of its ends, a sleeve inclosing said ianges and thereby connecting two of the alined limbs permitting them to swivel on their axes, and means operative to engage or dis* engage the other two alinable limbs.
2. A convertible ring and hook comprising two U-shaped members the limbs of one being alinable with the limbs of the other and each being provided with a flange at one of its ends, a sleeve inclosing said ianges and thereby connecting' two of the alined limbs permitting them to swivel on their axes, and a slidable sleeve operative to engage or disengage the other two alinable limbs.
3. A convertible ring and hook comprising two U-shaped members the limbs of one being alinable with the limbs of the other and each being provided with a flange at one of its ends, a sleeve inclosing said flanges and thereby connecting two of the alined limbs permitting them to swivel on their axes, a slidable sleeve operative to engage or disengage the other two alinable limbs, and a plate-spring carried by said slidable sleeve and bearing against said limbs.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
GOTTLIEB BEER.
