Description
R. L. NOTMAN.
CARRIAGE TOP BEST. I APPLICATION FILED MAR.26, 1908.
959391 Patented May 31,1910.
ROBERT L. NOTMAN, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNGR TO MCKINNON DASH COMPANY, OF BUFFALO, NEVT YORK.
CARRIAGE-TOP REST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. NOTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage Top Rests, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a rest for carriage tops which can be easily and cheaply manufactured, will be attractive in appearance, resembling the rubber rests commonly used, and will snugly engage its supporting bolt to prevent any rattling between the parts.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a top rest embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section thereof taken on line 2-2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal View, partly in section, of the rest and its supporting bolt. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal sectional view of the same taken on line 4l, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover plate.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures. I
A represents an attaching sleeve for the top rest which consists of a hollow body portion at having the form of a horizontal cylinder with a top segment removed and pro- Vided with a longitudinal opening in its flat top, and having its inner portions, adjacent to said opening, bent inwardly to form substantially horizontal top flanges or seats a, and downwardly to form substantially up right clamping jaws a which extend downwardly within the hollow body portion of 'the sleeve from the inner edges of said top flanges and are provided at their lower ends with inturned bottom flanges 41 B represents a flat cover plate which rests upon the horizontal flanges a.
The space between the cover plate B, the upright clamping jaws a and the bottom flanges a is of such form and size that these parts will fit closely upon a supporting bolt 0 of usual construction which is rectangular in cross section and is secured at its inner end to the top supporting rail 0 of the carriage seat. The clamping jaws a preferably converge somewhat downwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the insertion of the bolt C between these jaws forces them apart, thereby clamping the bolt firmly between them.
The body portion of the sleeve with its Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 26, 1908.
 Patented May 31, 1910. Serial No. 423,386.
top flanges, upright clamping jaws and their bottom flanges is preferably formed from one piece of sheet metal which may be stamped and bent to the desired form by any suitable means.
 I) represents a cushion or yielding pad for supporting the bows of the carriage or buggy top. This cushion rests upon the cover plate B and consists of a filling d of leather or other suitable cushioning or yielding material, and an outer flexible covering a? therefor, preferably of patent leather. This covering extends over the filling and around the side edges of the cover plate B and is turned inwardly beneath the latter, extending between the cover plate and the top flanges a of the sleeve.
Any desirable means may be employed for securing the cover plate to the top flanges of the body portion of the sleeve and clamping the covering (5 between these parts. In the construction shown, the cover plate is provided with clamping lips or spurs E which are offset from the same on opposite sides thereof adjacent to its ends and are adapted to pierce the inturned ends of the covering d and enter suitable holes or openings in the top flanges a of the sleeve, in which they are clamped by being bent into engagement with the under side of these flanges. The cover plate is thus secured firmly to the top flanges and the inturned ends of the covering are clamped between the plate and the flanges. By passing the clamping lips or spurs E through the flexible covering an additional fastening for the covering is obtained. I
Suitable washers or end plates F are located on the supporting bolt C at each end of the top rest and serve to close the ends ofthe top rest and give a neat and finished appearance to the same.
The inturned ends of the covering d preferably extend beneath the cover plate into the space between the same and the top of the supporting bolt 0. They thus keep the bolt from coming directly into contact with the cover plate, and prevent any noise or rattling between the parts.
The cushion is so shaped that it takes the place of the cylinder segment which is lacking in the attaching sleeve, so that with the cushion in place on the sleeve, the rest is substantially cylindrical in form and thus corresponds in appearance with the solid rests of rubber and other material which are in common use.
I claim as my invention:
 1. In a top rest, the combination of an attaching sleeve comprising a hollow body portion having the form of a horizontal cylinder with a top segment thereof removed, and provided at its top with a longitudinal opening, clamping jaws extending downwardly into said body portion on opposite sides of said opening for engagement with the attaching bolt, and a pad secured to said sleeve above said opening and forming the top segment of said cylindrical body portion, substantially as set forth.
 2. In a top rest, the combination of an attaching sleeve comprising a hollow body portion having the form of a horizontal cylinder with a top segment thereof removed, and provided at its top with a longitudinal opening, horizontal top flanges adjacent to the opposite sides of said opening, clamping jaws extending downwardly into said body portion from the inner ends of said flanges for engagement with the attaching bolt, and a pad secured to said horizontal top flanges and forming the top segment of said cylindrical body portion, substantially as set forth.
sassy/91 3. In a top rest, the combination of an attaching sleeve comprising a hollow body portion and a flat top portion having a longitudinal opening therein, clamping aws extending downwardly from said top portion into said body portion on opposite sides of said opening for engagement with the attaching bolt, a cover plate for said opening, a cushion located on said cover plate, and means for securing said cushion to said cover plate in place on the flat top portion of said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
4;. In a top rest, the combination of a sheet metal attaching sleeve comprising a hollow body portion, horizontal top flanges, clamping jaws extending downwardly into said body portion from the inner ends of said flanges and bottom flanges at the lower ends of said jaws, said clamping jaws being adapted to engage the attaching bolt, and a pad secured to said horizontal top flanges, substantially as set forth.
lVitness my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
