CARRIAGE-TOP REST.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT L. NOTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Carriage- Top Rests, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a rest for the bows of carriage tops which will be simple in construction, neat in appearance and economical in manufacture.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a top rest embody ing the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view, partly in section, of the rest and its supporting bolt. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section thereof, on an enlarged scale, in line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal View on the scale of Fig. 2, partly in section, in line 4-4, Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover plate.

A represents a rectangular attaching sleeve which consists of a trough-shaped lower or body portion as having its bottom and sides preferably formed from one piece of sheet metal and a separate top or cover plate B which rests thereon. The sides of the body portion a have their upper portions extended outwardly to form side flanges a which constitute a seat for the cover plate and to which the latter is preferably secured by means of clamping flanges b which extend from the ends of the cover plate and are bent around the ends of the side flanges a and clamped against the under sides thereof. This attaching sleeve is provided at the top with a cushion or yielding pad 0 for supporting the bows of the carriage or buggy top. This cushion C is secured to the upper side of the cover plate B and consists of a filling 0 of leather or other suitable cushioning or yielding material and an outer flexible covering a therefor, preferably of patent leather. This covering extends beyond this filling at both sides and is secured upon the cover plate B by means of clamping flanges c which extend from the seat flanges a of the sleeve upwardly around the side edges of the cover plate and are bent inwardly and downwardly upon the flexible covering and clamp the latter against the cover plate. This serves to draw the covering of the cushion tightly down upon its filling and to Specification of Letters Patent.

secure both the covering and the filling firmly in position upon the cover plate of the sleeve. The clamping flanges 0 also serve to secure the cover plate upon its seat on the body portion a of the sleeve, and if desired, the end clamping flanges b on the cover plate may be dispensed with and the flanges 0 alone employed for this purpose.

D represents a supporting bolt for the rest which is rectangular in cross section and fits snugly within the sleeve A. This bolt is secured at its inner end to the top supporting rail (Z of the carriage seat and secures the rest in position thereon. Suitable washers d are located on this bolt at each end of the top rest and serve to close the ends of the top rest and give a neat and finished appearance to the same.

By providing a comparatively broad flat seat for the cushion above the supporting bolt and forming the cushion thereon, a comparatively small amount of material is required and scrap and other waste material can be used with advantage for filling the cushion without impairing its utility. This results in a considerable saving in the cost of manufacture of these cushions. The parts forming the attaching sleeve are preferably stamped from sheet metal and the interlocking flanges of these parts enable the parts to be easily secured together to form the casing and the cushion to be firmly and quickly secured thereto.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a top rest, the combination of an attaching sleeve adapted to embrace the supporting bolt and comprising a trouglrshaped body portion and a separate cover plate therefor, the sides of said body port-ion being provided with flanges which extend outwardly therefrom forming a seat for said cover plate, a cushion located on said cover plate, means for securing said cushion in place on said cover plate, and interlocking connections between said flanges and said cover plate which are formed integrally on one of said parts and engage the other part for securing said cover plate in place on said body portion, substantially as set forth.

2. In a top rest, the combination of an attaching sleeve adapted to embrace the supporting bolt and comprising a trough-shaped body portion and a separate cover plate therefor, the sides of said body portion being provided at their upper edges with laterallyextending flanges forming a seat for said cover plate, a cushion located on said cover plate, and locking flanges extending from said lateral flanges and embracing the sides of said cover plate and securing said cover plate and said cushion in place on said body portion, substantially as set forth.

3. In a top rest, the combination of an attaching sleeve adapted to embrace the supportingbolt and comprising a trough-shaped body portion and a separate cover p ate therefor, the sides of said body portion being provided at their upper edges With laterallyextending flanges forming a seat for said cover plate, locking flanges at the ends of said cover plate engaging said lateral flanges to secure sald cover plate in place on said body portion, a cushion located on said cover plate, and looking flanges extendin from said lateral flanges and embracin th: sides ofsald cover plate and seourin said cushion in place thereon, substantially as set forth.
