T o all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, MIKE HERREL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevating-Scaiolds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to elevating` scaffolds.
The present invention has for its object the provision of an elevating scaffold of simple, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive construction, which is adapted to be readily installed or moved from place to place as may be required, embodying novel features in the construction of the scaffold, the elevating means therefor, and the means for securing the scaffold in the desired elevated position, the invention being intended for use to raise or lower material and other things required in the construction of building so that the same may be delivered at the desired height.
The invention is carried out by the provision of certain novel features and combinations of parts set forth in detail hereinafter and recited in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings F igure 1 is an end elevation; Fig. 2, a front elevation; and Fig. 3, a detail of one of the crank operated elevating devices.
The uprights or standards 1 may be placed any desired distance apart, each of which consists of parallel timbers 1a having spacing blocks 2 at their tops and bottoms, bases 3 and braces 4, all suitably bolted together to render the construction strong and rigid. The respective uprights 1 have a series of holes 5 extending therethrough at different heights, said holes being in all of the members 1a.
The movable part of the scaffold has slides 6 which are located between the respective members 1a of the uprights and are, respectively, provided with lateral timbers 7 which are braced by the braces 8 running from one to the other and fastened by suitable bolts. Planks 9 rest upon the timbers 7 of the respective uprights, certain of these planks being on one side of the uprights and others on the other side thereof and are intended to support the material or supplies which are to be elevated to the desired place on the building where they are to be used. To sustain the movable parts aforesaid, there are provided removable pins 10 which can be inserted in any of the holes 5 and thus the requisite support given, no matter where the movable part of the scaffold may be positioned.
At the upper ends of the uprights 1 are sheaves 11 over which run cables 12 which are connected by eye-bolts 13 to the respective slides 6. Secured to the lower parts of the uprights 1 are frames 14 (Fig. 3) in which are journaled drums 15 to which the cables 12 are connected. The shafts of the drums carry large gears 16 in mesh with pinions 17 on a counter-shaft 18 having a crank 19. Thus, great power is obtained.
When the movable part of the scaffold is in suitable lowered position, the necessary supplies for materials are placed upon the planks 9. The workmen then turn the cranks 19 and thus elevate the movable part of the scaffold to the required height, whereupon the pins 10 are inserted in the holes immediately below the members 7 and thus the scaffold is retained, subject to subsequent lowering on removal of said pins and exertion of a checking operation on the cranks 19.
