Speeication of Letters Patent. "Patented NV. 23, 1920.
.e Appiicatdn inea Marcil 2s, isis. Eseriai Nb. 87,225. f
Beit known that I, AXEL N. MrLLnR, a
`subject of the King of Norway, who have tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
forming a part of thisspecication, and in which,
Figure lis a side view of a construction embodying my invention,
Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the construction, i
F ig. 1i, an enlarged section taken on line Hof Fig. 1, y e y Fig. 5, a vertical section of one o'f a plurality Vof pulley blocks employed in the'construction, and a Fig. 6, an elevation taken at right angles F ig. 5. The preferred form of constructioinyas illustrated in the drawings, comprises a any desired construction and `four hollow ilpright guide ,posts at the `corners thereof.
- ach ofthe guide posts is formed of two oppositely disposedfchannel beams? and secured together, as indicated, the four posts i being `bound together and reinforced by horizontal tie members` `9 and diagonal Vtie members 10 to constitute a main supporting frame for the construction. `A pulley block 11 is slidably `arranged in each of the cor- `ner posts of the main frame `and carries at its lower end a grooved pulley 12, as indicated. Sockets 13 are provided at` the upper ends of pulley blocks 11 and have notches 14 at? their inner sides adapted to receive e and accommodate cross beams 15, as shown..
plurality of cables 16 having their ends 17 anchored at the upper ends of the guide posts, are passed under `pulleys 12`aiid over guide pulleys 18 and 19 to drums 2() ar ranged at `each side ofthe machine. gEach y `of the drums l2O is operatively connected by means of a gear 21 with a gear 22 fixed to an operating shaft 23 and provided with a crank handle 2li for rotating the same. An ordinary pawl and ratchet 25 are provided for preventing` retrograde movements of shaft 23. By this arrangement, "the cross beams 15 maybe readily elevatedor lowered in the main frame of the construction,
y i y as will bercadily understood. The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings Corner members 26 having both `upwardly and downwardly opening tapering sockets 27 and 28 respectively, are provided for making up, lthe scaffold frame sections, con ner uprights 29 and 30 being corresponde y y ingly tapered at their ends to fit said sockets, e Fig. 2,a view taken at right angles to i `Fig. 1, withportions broken away for the sake of clearness,
`the guide posts of the main frame and` opn crates through notches 35 provided Vin the sides thereof, said locking dogs being adapted to project through said notches to `automatically engage under socket members 26 resting on cross beams 15 when said beams areelevated, suitable notches 36 being provided in said beams` tol permit of such engagement. The locking dogs 34 are `arranged in pairs on shafts 37 connected to gether by means of a connecting link 38 so dogs, as will be readilvunderstood.
In use, to` commence the building ofthe scaffold, the I beams are lowered `in the main frame and four socket members 26 are placed `thereon at the four corners of said` frame as indicated. Uprights 29 are seated in these socket members and similar socket members placed over the upper ends thereof, all ofthe socket members being boun'd to- `as to compel simultaneous `operation of said y,
gether by the tie members 32 and 33, as indictated, thus completing a scaffold frame section. rl`hen this section is elevated by means of crank handle 2li until the lowermost vsocket members pass the dogs B4 which automaticallyv engage thereunder to prevent return movement thereof. rlhen the beams are lowered and new corner members 26 placed thereon as before. Uprights 29 are fitted in thevupper sockets in these new corner members and` in the lower sockets in the lower elevated corner members and tie niembers 32 and 33 secured in place as before,
l thus 'completing a new scaffold frame secters Patent is:
tion. VThis scaffold frame section is elevated as before and a new section applied to the bottom thereof as before to inciease the vheight thereof. Obviously this process may be Y continued Vuntil the desired height of scaffold is attained.
While I have illustrated and described the vpreferred form of construction for carrying Having described my invention .what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. The combination of a main frame; a
scaffold frame support on said main frame;
a plurality of scaffold fra-me sections adapted to be mounted on said support; means on said main frame for securing said scaffold frame sect-ions in elevated positions; and
fineans for elevatingsaid support to elevate said scaffold frame sections successively and lowering said support independently of said scaffold frame sections to permit of the interposition of a scaffold frame section under'an elevated scaffold frame section, substantially as described.
2..'I`he combination of a main frame; a scaffold frame support on said main frame; a'plurality of scaffold frame sections adapted to' be mounted on said support and having provisions for securing both upwardly and downwardly extending scaffold frame members thereto ;`means on said main frame vfor securing said scaffold frame sections in elevated positions; and means for elevating said support to elevate said scaffold frame sections successively and lowering said sup- Vportl independently of said lscaffold frame sections to permit of the interposition of a scaffoldframe'section under an elevated scaffold frame section, substantially as described. y y
'3. The combination of a main frame; a
y scaffold frame support on said main frame;
scaffold frame corner members adapted to be mounted on said support; means on said main frame for securing scaffold frame sections in elevated positions; and means for elevating said support operable to elevate said scaffold frame sections successively and to lower said support independently of said scaffold frame sections to permit of the interposition of a scaffold frame section under an elevated scaffold frame section, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a main frame; a scaffold frame on said main frame; scaffold frame corner members adapted to be mounted on said support and having provision for securing both upwardly and downwardly extending scaffold frame members thereto: means on said main frame for securing said scaffold frame corner members in elevated positions; and means ope 'able for elevating said support to elevate said scaffold frame sections successively and lowering said support independently of such scafiold frame corner members to permit of the interposition of a Scaold frame section under an elevated scaffold frame section, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a main frame; a scaffold frame support on said main frame; a plurality of scaffold frame sections adapted to be mounted on said support and having both upwardly and downwardly opening tapering sockets; means on said main frame for securing said scaffold frame sections in elevated positions; and means operable for elevating said support to elevate said scaffold frame sections successively and lowering said support independent-ly of such scaffold frame sections to permit of the interposition of a scaffold frame section under an elevated scaffold f 'ame section, substantially as described.
G. The combination of a main f `ame; a scaffold frame support on said main frame; scaffold frame corner members adapted to be mounted on said support and having both upwardly and downwardly tapering sockets; means on said main frame for securingr said scaffold frame corner members in elevated positions; and means operable for elevating said suppoit to elevate said scaffold frame corner members and lowering said support independently of said scaffold frame corner members to permit of the interposition of a scaffold frame section under an elevated scaffold frame section, substantially as described.
7. The combination of a main frame having hollow corner guide posts; pulley blocks slidable in said guide posts; cables arranged to elevate said pulley blocks; means for simultaneously and uniformly elevating all of said pulley blocks; cross beams resting on said pulley blocks; corner members having upwardly and downwardly opening sockets resting on said cross beams at the corners of said frame; upright corner members to fit lOO said sockets; tie members. connecting said name to this specicaton in the presence of socket members to constltute e scaffold two subsoriblng Wltnesses. frame sectlon, and means lndependent of the V .1 j elevating means to engage and sustain the AXEL N MILLIAN" corner members when the elevating means Witnesses: are Withdrawn, substantially as described. JosHUA R. H. Po'ms,
In testimony whereof I have signed my B. G. RICHARDS.
