Be it known that I, JAMES T. STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements 1n amusement apparatus.

The primary object of my invention is the provision of an amusement apparatus which comprises the representation of a sanatorium. and a plurality of movable elements. One of the elements carries a plurality of figures representing people of both seXes at advanced ages, while the other element carries a plurality of figures represent-ing such people as they appeared at earlier ages. In the operation of the apparatus, the figures representing people at advanced ages are seen to enter the Sanatorium, while those figures representing the people at earlier ages are seen to leave the Sanatorium, the effect being that it appears to t-he observer that the people of advanced ages have, by their passage through the sanatorium, been made younger.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an amusement device which is simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein the figure is a vertical sectional view of an amusement apparat-us constructed in accordance with my invention.

The amusement apparatus is designed for use at pleasure resorts and for use as a show window attraction. In its preferred form, the amusement apparatus comprises a floor or base 1, a setting 2 which is mounted upon the floor or base 1 and which represents a sanatorium, and scenery 3 which is mounted upon the base in rear of and at the ends of the setting 2. The invention also comprises movable elements or sprocket chains 4 and 5 which are mounted for travel in a vertical plane located in rear of' and extending longitudinally of the setting 2 and which eX- tend beyond both ends of the setting 2. vanced ages, and the chain 5 carries a plurality of figures 7 which represent such people as they appeared at earlier ages.

In the operation of the apparatus, the figures 6 are seen to enter and the figures 7 to leave the Sanatorium 2. As the figures 7 represent at earlier ages those people represented by the figures 6 it appears to the observer that the people have undergone a change, that is to say, they have been made younger' by their passage through the sanitarium.

The chains 4 and 5 are mounted on vertical sprocket wheels 8 and 9 and on vertical sprocket wheels 10 and 11, respectively. The sprocket wheels 8 and 9 are respectively mounted on horizontal shaft-s 12 and 18 which are journaled on the underside of the floor or base 1 at points spaced from the ends of the setting 2 and which extend transversely of the floor or base 1. The sprocket wheels 9 and 10 are mounted upon a horizontal shaft 14 which is journaled on the underside of the floor or base 1 centrally between the shafts 12 and 13 and which eX- tends transversely of the fioor or base 1.

The apparatus is adapted to be operated through the medium of an electric motor 15, which is arranged below the floor or base 1, and which is connected with the shaft 13 through the medium of a belt 16. The construction of the apparatus is such that the rotation of the shaft 13 will cause the movable elements 4 and 5 to travel in the same direction whereby to cause the figures 6 to enter the dwelling 2 and the figures 7 to emerge therefrom.

It should be apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that I provide an apparatus from which considerable pleasure may be derived, one that is simple, durable and efficient, and one that may be manufactured and erected at small cost.

Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is An amusement apparatus comprising a base, a setting mounted upon the base and representing a sanatorium, a scene mounted upon the base in rear of and at the ends of the setting, horizontal shafts extending `upon said last named shaft, sprocket chains mounted upon the vertical sprocket wheels, the sprocket chains being adapted to travel in a vertical plane located in rear of and eX- tending longitudinally of the setting, a set of gures mounted upon each chain, one set of 15' gures representing people in advanced ages, the other set of gures representing the same people at earlier ages, and a motor, connected with one of said first named shafts.
