MAIL-BOX.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. GOLGERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Juniata, inthe county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in mail boxes, especially adapted for rural delivery.
The object of my invention is to provide a mail box. so constructed, that the same may be swung out-ward into the road, to be brought proximal to the seat of the mail wagon, and after the mail has been deposited, be again swung away from the road.
A further object is to so construct the box and its connected post and base that the same will form in effect a unitary invention, so that there are no loose parts needing adjustment.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it: being understood that changes in the speciic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a mail box embodying my invention, Fig. 2 shows a front view, Fig. 3 is a top view, Fig. 1 shows a fragmentary view of the standard disclosing the enlarged semispherical base.
The aim of my invention is to simplify the delivery and collection of mail from rural mail boxes.
In carrying out the object of my invention, I employ a tubular standard 5 which at its lower end is provided with a semispherical enlargement 6 having the flat upper surface 4:, and the securing stem 3. This standard is provided near the upper end with the supporting collar 8 secured by means of the screw 13, and near the lower end with the drain collar 7 which has an upper rounded surface as shown. Cast about the lower end of this tubular standard 5 is a securing base 15 which is prefer- Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led September 17, 1909.
Serial No. 518,285.
ably made of concrete and has the upper rounded surface 2, and a flat bottom 1. This concrete base 15 is revolubly held upon the standard 5, the drain collar 7 resting upon the upper endof the base. Owing to the enlargement 6, the standard cannot be withdrawn though the same freely revolves within the base. Held upon this tubular standard 5 is the mail box 10 which has its base 16 extending beyond the rear end of the box as shown in the top view, while the side of the box extends obliquely toward this base extension 16. This extension has an aperture arranged to receive the standard 5. The extending portion 16 rests upon the collar 8.
The mail box 10 is of any approved conformation and extending from the forward corners of the mail box are the brace rods 11 which have their lower ends 2O secured to the standard 5 by means of the bolts 12, Within the upper end the standard has an ornamental spear head 9 of a size larger than the standard to prevent the box being removed from the standard aft-er the spear head has been secured. The standard 5 freely revolves within its base which is secured at a suitable point so that: the same may be swung outward to be in reach of the postman.
The device is light, neat, simple of construction and positive in its operation.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
In combination, a tubular standard having` an enlargement at the lower end, a concrete base cast about the lower end of said standard, cylindrical in outline, a drain collar secured to said standard and resting upon the upper end of said base and support-ing said standard, a collar secured near the upper end of said standard, a mail box I,having its base extending beyond the rear end of the box with an aperture, said standard passing through said aperture, and brace rods extending from the forward corners of said box and secured to said standard above said drain collar.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
