ATTORNEY8 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. EEBEB, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; OLIVE S. REBER, ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID JOHN G. REFER, DECEASED, ASSIGNOR TO THE SEFTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF ANDERSON, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
FOLDING BOX.
Patented May 24, 1910. Serial No. 81,703.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. REBER, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding boxes, and its object is to provide a simple, inexpensive but serviceable box of this character, whose advantage and points of utility will be apparent from the description hereinafter given.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of that portion of the folding box which will be hereinafter termed a strip; Fig. 2 a plan view of the box blank proper; Fig. 3 a perspective of the box blank with the strip attached thereto; Fig. 4 a perspective of the blank and strip in flat or collapsed form; Fig. 5 a perspective of the blank folded into the form of a box but showing the strip (partly broken away) before it has been pressed into place; and Fig. 6 a perspective of the completed box with a portionthereof broken away.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, the box blank proper of my improved box comprises the bottom 1 and the four sides 2, 3, 4 and 5. In the present instance the box is oblong and consequently the. sides 4 and 5 can, termed ends. The remaining portions at the four corners of the blank are each diagonally scored to form the corner folds 6 and 7 the corner fold 7 being triangular, and the corner fold 6 being in the present instance, and preferably, trapezoidal in shape.
Connected in suitable manner to the blank above described is a strip, see Fig. 1, which is preferably transversely scored to form a bottom 8, sides 9 and 10 and pasting strips 11 whereby the strip proper may be pasted at its ends to two of the opposite sides of the box blank, in the present instance to the two opposite sides 4 and 5, as will be readily understood from Fig. 3. The bottom 8 and the sides 9 and 10 of the strip are substantially equal in area to the bottom 1 and ends 4 and 5 respectively, and when in its flat or collapsed form the ends 4 and 5 and corfor convenience in description, be
ner folds 6 and 7 may be folded within the compass of the bottom 1 and ends 4 and 5 so as to lie between such ends and bottom and the said strip, as in Fig. 4.
In the operation of folding the blank to form the box the ends 4 and 5 as well as the strip will be raised so that the box takes the shape shown in Fig. 5, with the corner folds lying against the ends 4 and 5 of the box. The strip is now pressed downwardly into the box, and as it corresponds in size therewith, it fits snugly therein as shown in Fig. 6, with the result that the strip locks the box in shape and also provides a false or double bottom and sides therefor. The bottom portion 8 of the strip is creased tran'sversely, preferably at its middle, as .at a, Fig. 1, to facilitate the pressing down of the strip into the box, without breaking the stock. The folds 6 may if desired be pasted to the ends 4 and 5, in which event the box cannot be opened out into the position shown in Fig. 3, but will be folded up from the position of Fig. 4 to that of Fig. 5 and thence into that of Fig. 6.
The blank shown in Fig. 2 is provided with an extension forming a lid or cover 12 and an end flap 13, and such blank also has in addition, in the present instance, two end flaps 14. In the form herein shown the box is not provided with a lid, other than the cover 12, but it will be understood that a lid made similar to the box proper, or otherwise made, may be used.
I claim:
A box blank having a bottom and sides two of which have extension flaps 14 and one of which has an extension 12, all adapted to fold over upon the contents of the box, a strip connected with said blank and adapted when the blank is folded into box form to rest adjacent-the bottom and two opposite sides, said strip having pasting flaps at its said extension flaps; substantially as described.
JOHN G. REBER. Witnesses:
