Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES AUTH, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Annunciator-Drops, and do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to annunciator drops.
My improvements are applicable to annunciator drops that are used for any desired purpose.
The object of my invention is to provide a drop which is extremely compact and is operable with a very small current. The drop which constitutes an embodiment of my invention is, furthermore, very simple in construction and such that screws are avoided as much as possible, so as to prevent the possibility of the parts getting out of their proper relative positions. At the same time in spite of the simplicity of the construction, the drop is positive in operation and cannot by any possibility give a wrong signal.
I have shown one embodiment of my in vention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the drop as applied to a supporting wall; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the armature.

In the drawings 1 is a soft iron bracket having two diagonally opposed extensions 2 thereon, provided with screw holes 3 to permit the bracket to be attached to the annunciator casing or other structure to which the drop is to be applied. The bracket 1 comprises a base plate 4 and two horizontal extensions of the plate 5 which are parallel To the center of the base late 1 is riveted the core 6 of the magnet 7.
he lower horizontal extension 5 is provided with a rectangular socket 8 in which the lower end 9 of the soft iron armature 10 is supported, the armature being thus maintained in front of the end of the magnet 7. The upper horizontal extension 5 carries a non-magnetic plate 11 having a plurality of slots 12 therein, which are adapted to receive screws 13 screwed into the upper horizontal extension 5. The plate 11 has a rectangular opening 1 1 in its end to permit a restricted movement of the upper end of the armature 10. The plate 11 is made adjustable so as to adjust the inner limit of move ment of the armature toward or from the core of the magnet 7. It frequently happens that after being used some little while, the core of the magnet and the armature become suficiently magnetized to cause the armature to be permanently retained against the end of the core of the magnet, even when the current is broken. The effect of this can be remedied by preventing the armature from too closely approaching the end of the core of the magnet. It will thus be seen that by adjusting the plate 11 outwardly, the armature 10 can be prevented from being permanently drawn to the end of the core 6 of the magnet 7. The sides of the base plate 4: are provided with two journal brackets 15 having openings 16 in their ends. These openings 16 are designed to carry the journals or pivots 17 of a signaling member 18. The signaling member 18 comprises a flat plate 19 carried upon side brackets 20 to which are attached the journals 17. One of the side brackets 20 is provided with an arm 21 adapted to contact with a projection 22 extending from the side of the upper horizontal extension 5. The body of the fiat plate 19 carries a rearwardly directed catch 23, which is provided for the purpose of catching upon the upper end of the armature 10 when the current is broken and the signaling member 18 is in its re-set position. The non-magnetic plate 11 is cut away at its end at 24: to permit the passage of the catch 23 to and from the top of the armature 10. In order to normally force the armature 10 outwardly away from the end of the magnet 7, the core 6 thereof is provided with a centrally located socket 25 carrying a spring 26 which presses against the inner face of the armature 10.
The operation of the drop is as follows:- The nonmagnetic plate 11 having been ad justed in a manner to prevent the armature 10 from being permanently retained against the core 6 of the magnet 7 by the residual magnetism, and the signaling member 18 having been moved upwardly so that the catch 23 rests upon the upper end of the armature 10, upon the circuit being closed the armature 10 is simultaneously attracted by the core 6 of the magnet 7 and the upper horizontal extension 5. This follows from the fact that the bracket 1 being made of soft iron and connected to the core 6 of the magnet 7, is also magnetized with the same polarity as the end of the core 6 to which it is attached. The two horizontal extensions 5 having the same polarity, induce the opposite polarity in the two ends of the armature. The center of the armature consequently acquires a polarity opposite to that of its ends. As a result, the armature and core both simultaneously attract each other at the center and upper end of the armature. The armature 10 is thus drawn toward the end of the core 6 of the magnet '7, thus releasing the catch 23 from the top thereof. The signaling member 18, because of its weight, now falls downwardly into a horizontal position, where the flat plate 19 thereon exhibits, through a proper opening, some distinguishing mark indicating the nature of the signal. The signaling member 18 is retained in its horizontal position by means of the arm 21 contacting with the projection 22. The signal having thus been conveyed to the proper person by a momentary closing of the circuit, as is usual in the operation of such devices, the signaling member 18 is moved upwardly by a hand, using any intermediate mechanism for accomplishing this purpose that may be desired, until the catch 28 rests above the upper end of the armature 10. The signaling member 18 is now in its re-set position. The non-magnetic plate 11 can be adjusted from time to time to prevent the armature 10 from approach ing the end of the core 6 too closely.
It will thus be seen that the drop which is an embodiment of my invention is very compact in construction. Only a very short magnet is used,inasmuch as when using both poles of the magnet, as I do, a comparatively Weak magnet can be used to accomplish the desired purpose. The same is true as to the current. Inasmuch as I make use of both poles of the magnet a very small current may be used too. No amount of jarring can possibly ar the signaling member 18 from its re-set position, as it is permanently carried upon the upper end of the armature 10, where it can only exert a downward thrust against the lower extension 5, where the armature 10 is pivoted. Furthermore, the device cannot readily get out of order, as there are no screws used in the construction other than upon the non-magnetic plate 11 which must be adjusted from time to time. WVhen it is desired to replace any of the parts of the device, the side brackets 20 of the signaling member 18 can be spread apart so as to release the latter from the journal brackets 15. By removing the non-magnetic plate 11, the armature 10 can also readily be removed.
While I have described my invent-ion above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combinationv of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, an armature movable at one end, and an adjustable plate engaging and limiting the movement of said end.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, an armature, means for supporting the armature in front of the core, an adjustable slotted plate engaging with the armature, for limiting the movement thereof toward the said core and a signaling device operable by said armature.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, the core of which is extended so as to bring the poles in the same plane, an armature supported for movement in front of said poles, an adjustable plate upon the core for limiting the movement of the armature toward the core and a signaling device operable by said armature.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electromagnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions in such a manner that the extension magnetizes the armature, a limiting stop for the armature upon another extension and a signaling device operable by said armature.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions in such a manner that the extension magnetizes the armature, a limiting stop for the armature upon another extension, said electromagnet being supported between the said extensions and a signaling device operable by said armature.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions in such a manner that the extension magnetizes the armature, an adjustable stop for the armature upon another extension and a signaling device operable by said armature.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions in such a manner that the extension magnetizes the armature, an adjustable stop for the armature upon another extension, said electro-magnet being supported between the said extensions and a signaling device operable by said armature.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions, a limiting stop for the armature upon another extension, one or more journal brackets upon said plate, and a signaling member supported by said brackets.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions, a limiting stop for the armature upon another extension, said electro-magnet be ing supported between the said extensions, one or more journal brackets upon said plate, and a signaling member supported by said brackets.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions, an adjustable stop for the armature upon another extension, one or more journal brackets upon said plate, and a signaling member supported by said brackets.
11. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a core therefor, a plate attached thereto, said plate having a plurality of extensions, an armature supported in one of said extensions, an adjustable stop for the armature upon another extension, said electro-magnet being supported between the said extensions, one or more journal brackets upon said plate, and a signaling member supported by said brackets.
12. In a device of the character described, the combination of an electro-magnet, a horizontally movable armature pivotally supported at its lower portion in a vertical position in front of the same, and a vertically movable pivoted signaling member adapted to be supported on a level with the electro-magnet, by the upper end of said armature in one position thereof.
