To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SILAs J. SUMMERS, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of lVheeling, county of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trombones, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to braces for trombone slides, and more particularly to combined bracing means and hand engaging means for trombone slides; and it consists in the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.

The primary object of the invention is to provide bracing devices on opposite sides of the ordinary cross-brace for the stationary or inner slide of a trombone, said bracing devices being adapted for holding the opposite arallel slide members in rigid relation to tie connecting cross-brace and to each other.

A further object is to so construct said bracing devices as to afford finger rests or holds whereby a supporting grasp may be secured upon the trombone, and to so locate said devices that the hand when in grasping engagement therewith occupies a natural unstrained position.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of trombone slides embodying my invention; andFig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the same, enlarged.

Referring to said drawings, in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views1 and 2 indicate the opposite parallel members of the stationary or inner slide, and 3 and 4 the opposite members of the movable or outer slide of a trombone, and 5 indicates the crossbrace connecting the members 1 and 2.

5 on the rear side of the latter and adjacent to the angle formed by the junction of the two, the line of bearing being at substantially an angle of 45. Attached rigidly to the opposite, or front, side of the cross-brace 5 at a point slightly above the middle of the latter is a ring 7, and rigidly attached to the member 2, preferably upon the cushion pocket 8, is a small upright member 9 which may be of any appropriate form. Interposed between the ring 7 and the member 9, and rigidly secured to both, is a semi-circular member 10. The ring 7, member 9 and member 10 are substantially in alinement and constitute a brace 11 for the crossbrace 5, the line of bearing being at substantially an angle of 45 and the points of attachment of the braces 6 and 11 being in alinement.

The rings 6 and 7 and the member 9 constitute seats for the reception of three fingers of the left hand of the player, said left hand being employed for supporting the instrument; and when the fingers are seated therein, the hand occupies a natural position preventing the strain to which the muscles of the wrist are subjected in supporting the instrument in the usual way.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A trombone having a ring rigidly mounted upon one member of the inner slide and the cross-brace of the latter adjacent to the angle formed by said member and said cross-brace, said ring serving as a brace, and a second brace located on the opposite side of said cross-brace and rigidly connected at one end to the latter and at the other end to the other member of said slide, said brace comprising a ring and a semicircular member, said rings and said semicircular member affording finger rests whereby the instrument may be grasped.

2.
