Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1910.
Application filed January 24, 1908. Serial No. 412,366.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN F. DRAKE, of Tracy, Lyon county, Minnesota., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Boiler-Fluss, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means to be used in connection with a detachable boiler' flue to prevent the sleeve inclosing the flue from being loosened or pushed out of place by the pressure of steam.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, Fig. 1 is a sectional view illustrating a detachable boiler flue with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating a modified construction. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line wof Fig. 2. Fig. 1 illustrates the extension at the end of the flue threaded thereon instead of butt-welded as illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of a modified construction.
In the drawing, 2 and 3 represent the flue sheets of the boiler, the former being at the fire box end and the latter at the smoke box end. The sheet 2 has a flue seat 4L that flares outwardly from the inner surface of the sheet and the sheet 3 has a seat 5 that ares outwardly also or in the opposite direction from the seat 4. A flue 6 has extensions 7 and 8 butt-welded thereon, said extensions being tapered to fit the seats in the flue sheets and permitting the flue when removed to be driven through the sheets into the i'ire box end of the boiler. A packing ring 9 is interposed between the extension 4 and its seat, and a sleeve 10 having a similar packing ring is provided between the extension 8 and its seat, the sleeve being tapered oppositely from the taper of the extension. I have found in practice that there is danger of this sleeve working loose and being forced out by the pressure of the steam. I therefore prefer to thread the end of the extension 8 and provide a bur 11 thereon. This bur is adapted to be turned up against the outer end of the sleeve 10 and force it snugly on to its seat and lock it securely against accidental displacement.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modified construction which consists in threading the end of the flue and providing an interiorly threaded collar 12 thereon having slots 13 in its opposite surfaces adapted to receive inwardly projecting pins 141 on a sleeve 15.
The slot-s 13 at their outer ends extend lengthwise of the ue and turn to a position substantially cross-wise thereof forming inclined or cam surfaces 16 which engage the pins 14 and allow the sleeve to be rotated and at the same time drawn forwardly to its seat and thus locking the sleeve securely in place. A packing ring similar to those described above is inserted between the sleeve and the flue seat.
In Fig. 5 an interiorly threaded collar 17 is shown for the threaded end of the flue. This collar is tapered in the same direction as the flue extensions and a sleeve 18 is inserted between the collar and its packing `ring and has a beveled ceive the corresponding surface of a lock nut 20 that fits the threaded end of the liuc. The tendency of this nut having a broad bearing surface on the end of the sleeve is to force it securely to its seat.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a boiler, the combination, with the flue sheets having flue seats extending therethrough from one side to the other, said seats being tapered from the outer toward the inner surfaces of said sheets, of a flue having tapered ends, the taper at the fire box end of said flue being toward the middle of the flue and the taper of the opposite end of the flue being toward its outer end, whereby a tool may be applied to drive the flue through the flue sheets into the iire box, packing rings interposed between the ends of the iiue and the seats thereof, a tapered sleeve fitting between the flue and its packing` ring at the end Athereof opposite from the fire box, and means for locking said sleeve against prematurey outward movement, said means including a groove having a diagonally arranged cam edge and a pin cooperating with said groove, substantially as described.
2. In a boiler, the combination, with the flue sheets having flue seats extending therethrough from one side to the other, said seats being tapered from the outer toward the inner surfaces of said sheets, a flue provided between said sheets, tapered sections mounted on the ends of said flue, said sections being' tapered in the same direction and fitting within the openings in said sheets, a
outer end 19 to resleeve tapered from its outer toward its inner end fitting between one of said sections and its flue seat and adapted when tightened to form a tight joint between the flue and seat, said section having a groove in its outer surface the inner portion of said groove having a diagonally arranged cam edge and said sleeve having an inwardly projecting pin adapted to enter said groove and engage said edge and draw said sleeve snugly to its seat and prevent accidental dislodginent of the same.
3. In a boiler, the combination, with the flue sheets having flue seats extending therethrough `from one side to the other, said seats being tapered from the outer toward the inner surfaces of said sheets, of a ue having tapered ends, the taper at the fire box end of saidflue being toward the middle of the flue and the taper of the opposite end of said flue being toward its outer end, whereby a tool flue through the iiue sheets into the fire box, packing rings interposed between the ends of said iue and the tapered seats thereof, a tapered sleeve itting between said iue and its packing ring at the end thereof opposite from the fire box and said end being threaded, and a lock nut fitting thereon and contacting with the outer end of said tapered sleeve, whereby said sleeve will be securely locked against premature endwise movement. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of January 1908.
