To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,- WILLIAM M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turtle Creek, in the county of Allegheny and State of Penns lvania, have invented certain new and usefu Improvements in Stay-Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flexible stay bolts and the object thereof is to provide means in a manner as hereinafterset forth for bracing the roof and crown sheets of boiler fire boxes, which will allow for and accommodate the forces of expansion and contraction on lines of least reslstance, that will permit of material movement of the complete fire box under. expansion and contraction without imparting twisting or bending strains to the stay bolts or the sheets to which the stay bolts are attached and furtherthat will enable the conveniently positioning and securing of the stay bolt at any angle desired with respect to the boiler sheets without the employment of coupling devices or pads at tached to the inner face of the boiler sheets.
Further objects of the invention are to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a flexible stay bolt for the roof and crown sheets of boiler fire boxes which is capable of' being conveniently positioned at the desired angle, flexing when occasion so requires, that is, on the expansion and contraction of the boiler sheets, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily adjustable for the ur ose of decreasing or increasing the lengtfi of the bolt and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the-foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the .novel construction, combination and arran ement of arts hereinafter more specifica ly descri ed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto ap ended.

Referring to the drawings in detail. 1 denotes the roof sheet of the boiler, and 2 the crown sheet-of the fire box, these are of known construction.
The roof sheet 1 is formed with a series of openings 3 having the walls thereof provided with threads to which are attached coupling plugs referred to generally by the reference character 4. Each of the plugs 4 is cylindrical and hollow from end to end and formed with eri heral threads 5 for engagement with t e t reads of the walls of the openings 3. Each of the plugs 4 at its inner end is formed with an annular flange 6 which extends at right angles with respect to the body portion of the plug and the said flange 5 has a flat u per face 7, a flat lower face 8, and is flare as at 9. The upper face 7 is of greater width than the lower face 9. The upper face 7 of the flange 6 constitutes a seat for a pur ose to be hereinafter referred to. Each of tlie plugs 6 is furthermore provided with a plurality of o enings 10 arranged above the plane of the ange 6 and in a plane inwardly of the inner face of the roof sheet'l. The openings 10 extend downwardly at an inclination and constitute escape ports for any steam which may be generated within the plug and also escape orts for condensates. Theplug 4 is close through the mcdium of a disk 11, the latter having peripheral threads which engage with threads formed on theinner face of the plug at the outer end thereof. with a groove 12 to receive a'suitable tool or instrument for positioning or removing the closure disk 11 when occasion so requires.
Arranged within each of the coupling plugs 4 is an annular bearing member 13 having a flat lower face for engagement with the seat formed by the flat upper face 7 of the Patented Aug. 24, 1909.

The crown sheet 2 is formed with a series of openings 18, the walls of which are threaded and engaging with the. said threads are the coupling plugs 19. The coupling plugs 19 are of a length as to project from the inner face of the seat 2 and have their inner ends inturned as at'20 to' provide seats 21 for a function to be presently referred to. The plugs '19 are closed by the disk 22, which has, peripheral threads for engagement with the threads on the inner faceof the plugs 19. e rece tion of a suitable tool or instrument to facilitate the removal and positioning of the disk. The form of stay bolts shown in Figs. 1., 2 and 3 consist of a shank 24 having the outer end thereof enlarged as at 25 to constitute a head, the head 25 at its outer terminus being squared as at 26 for the rece tion of the tool to manipulate or adjust the olt when occasion so requires. The enlarged head 24 is rounded so that its inner portion will consti tute the bearing surface which is mounted against a seat 15 formed on the wall of the bore of the annular bearing member 13. The shank 24 at its inner end is threaded as at 27 and engaging the said threads 27 is-'a removable head 28, the latter being provided with interior threads for engagement with the threads 27 and is furthermore provided with a rounded enlargement 29, the periphery of which constitutes a bearing surface for engagement with the seat 21 of the inner coupling plug 19. The removable head 28 constitutes means whereby the length of the bolt can beincreased or diminished when occasion so requires.
The centers of the inner plugs 19 are always on a line with the axes of the bores of the bearing members 13 whereby the bolts can always be set at the desired inclination.
The bore of the bearing member 13 is inclined with respect to the axis of the lug 4, but thedirection of inclination of the bore of the bearing member 13, when the said bearing member 13 is in its operative position, is opposite with respect to the direction of inclination of the plug4, when the latter is mounted in sheet 1.
By setting up the coupling lugs 4 in the manner as stated and with the caring member 13 the bore of the latter being inclined as stated, it does not necessitate the angularlydisposing of the openin s with respect to the coupling plugs so that t e bolts can be properly positioned. The openings upon one side of the center of the sheet or'upor'l the other side of the center of said sheetcan be disposed at a different angle to thatof the inclination of the inner coupling lugs19, yet the stay bolts can be set up at t e proper angle. Such position is obtained owing to the inclined bore of the bearing member 13 and the shifting of the heads 25 and 28 upon the seats 15'-and 21 so that the bolts can be readily positioned at the desired inclination and at the same time the necessary degree of flexibility is obtained for the bolts to prevent breakage thereof during the contraction and expansion'of the boiler sheets.
By providing the coupling plugs 4 in the I manner as stated it is readily'apparent that no difficulty is presented when setting up the bolts at varying inclinations, as the bearing members .13 can be readily turned to position the bore thereof to extend in the direction desired, the bolt, with head 28 removed, inserted through the plug and bearin member, the threaded end of the shan then extended into the pin 19 and the head 28 replaced upon the t readed end of the shank 24, thus maintaining the bolt in position and by means of the plugs 4 and 19 and the bearing members 13 the bolts are coupled to the sheets 1 and 2. Prior to the positioning of the head 28 upon the threaded end of the shank, the shank of the bolt is adjusted to the desired inclination, the head 25 and seats 15 and 21 allowing for such adjustment. The beveled end 17 of the wall of the bearing member 13 as well as the beveled inner ed e 17 of the plug 19 allows of the shank 24 o the bolt to be shifted when the heads move upon their seats due to the contraction and expansion of the sheet, that is to say, the beveled or flaring ends 17 and 17 provide clearances to allow of the movement of the shank, such arrangement affording the necessary flexibility but preventing the breaking of the bolts.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the bolt is the same as that referred to in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The plug and bearing member for coupling one end of the bolt to sheet 1 is the same as that referred to in connection with the Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The lug and bearing member for coupling the bolt to sheet 2 is of a construction similar to that em loyed for coupling the bolt to sheet 1. he reference character? for the coupling plugs shown in Fig. 4 are shank of the bolt is indicated by the reference character 30, and is threaded at each end as at 31,32. By setting upthe' stay belts in the manner as heretofore set forth, it is evident that no difliculty is resented in adapting them to portions of tile roof sheets and crown sheets where the coupling plugs which are secured into the curved roof sheet will extend at an angle with res set to the bolt, as itis obvious that the p ugs can be readily connected to the roof sheet, adjusted if necessary, and the bolt inserted and conveniently .positioned to the desired angle.
What I claim is:
-1. In combination a coupling plug adapted to be secured to a boiler sheet normally to the surface of the sheet at the point where inserted said lug at its inner end having a right angular y-dis osed inwardly-extending annular flange, a caring member mounted upon said flange, said bearing member having a flat lower face, a fiatupper face inclined with res set to the lower ace and having a bore, sai bore having its upper portion projecting inwardly to rovide an annular seat, said seat dispose at an inclination with respect to the axis of the plug, said bore having the lower portion of its wall flaring, and a stay bolt provided with a head, said head mounted upon said seat;
