To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, ANTONIO BIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, county of El Paso, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and` useful Improvements in Advertising-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of ad vertising mediums which are designed to be arranged in the arms of rocking-chairs for the purposes of displaying or exhibiting advertisements placed in a movable carrier composed of a web of flexible material, the main object of the invention being to provide an advertising arm-chair with new and improved means for effectually displaying cards, signs, or other advertising matter, the construction being such that the carrier bearing the advertisements is caused to travel whenever the chair is rocked.

A further object of the invention ,is the production of a device of thel character stated which shall be inexpensive of manufacture, and strong and durable in its construction.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinary rocking arm-chair and 2 the arm thereof in which the advertising device is arranged. One arm only of the chair is shown provided with an advertising device but each may be provided therewith if so desired. In the rocker 3 of the chair a lever 4 is fulcrumed at the point 5, the rocker being slotted or cut away to receive said lever. rocker and is held in a normal position by means of the leaf spring 7 acting thereon, the latter being secured to the rocker 3. Pivoted to the end 8 of the lever 4 is a rod 9 extending upwardly through the longitudinal bore 11 provided in the post 12 of the chair, the upper end of said rod being formed into a hook 13. At this juncture it is apparent that when the chair is rocked forwardly that the end 6 will be forced upwardly relatively to the rocker 3 against the resistance of the spring 7, and that the rod 9 will be drawn downwardly simultaneously with this movement.

The arm 2 of the chair is preferably composed of a wood body portion 14 whose edges are reinforced by the metallic chamiel member 15 secured thereto by means of the screws 16 passing through the lower web thereof into said wood body. This channel member not only reinforces the wood but when polished adds to the neatness and attractiveness of the device. Interposed between the upper web of the member 15 and the wood body 14 is a glass top 17, this being provided to render the device dustproof and as a support for the arm of a person sitting in the chair. The wood body 14 is channeled to receive the movable advertisement carrier which consists in the web 18 having the advertisements printed thereon or attached thereto, the rollers 19 and 2O being provided to carry said web. The roller 19 is an idler and is journaled in the wood body 14 as shown in Fig. 3, thev web or belt 18 being also shown in this iigure. The web is actuated by the drive roller 20 shown in Fig. 5. This roller is mounted similar to the roller 19, the journals 21 eX- tending into the wood body 14. Secured to one end of the roller 20 by means of the screws 22 is a disk 23 having a circular guide groove 24 in the face thereof and a series of recesses 25 formed in said groove. This disk coacts with the rod 9 in driving the roller 20, the hook 13 on said rod being maintained in engagement with said disk by means of the leaf spring 26 secured in the post 12. During the downward movement of the rod 9 the hook 13 will be in engagement with a recess 25 and cause the roller 2O to rotate and to move the web, but during upward movement of said rod the hook disengages the recess and lies freely in the guide groove 24 in order to be in proper po- Specication of Letters latent. The up' preferable form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent is:

l. The combination with a chair having posts, arms and rockers, of a movable advertising device mounted in one of the arms of the chair, a post of the chair being provided with a longitudinal passage, a mem ber protruding from the rocker for contact with the chair supporting surface when the chair is rocked and connected through said passage with said advertising device for operating the same.

2. In a rocking arm-chair, a movable advertising device mounted in one of the arms of the chair, an operative mechanism therefor mounted in the rocker of the chair adapted to contact with the floor and to move relative to said rocker whenever the chair is rocked, a post of the chair provided with a longitudinal bore, and an operative connection between said device and said mechanism tween one of said rollers and said lever, a

spring secured in said rocker and adapted to maintain said lever inV constant contact with the floor, and a post of the chair provided with a longitudinal bore, said operative connection comprising a rod pivoted to said lever and adapted to reciprocate in said bore, substantially as described.

4. In a rocking arm-chair, an idler and a driven roller mounted in an arm of the chair` an advertising belt mounted to travel on said rollers, a lever fulcrunied in a rocker of the chair having one end in continual Contact with the floor and adapted to oscillate whenever the chair is rocked, a vertically movable rod pivoted to the other end of said lever and provided with a hook at its upper extremity, a disk secured to one en-d of said driven roller, a circular groove and recesses formed in the face of said disk, means for holding said hoolr in engagement with said groove during the upward movement of said rod and with said recesses during the downward movement thereof, and a ratchet-wheel and stop-pawl arranged at the other end of said driven roller, substantially as described.
