To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS C. VAN RIPER,

.a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication.

The invention has relation, particularly, to that class of envelops intended for the transmission through the mails of printed matter, such as catalogues, circulars or the like, the construction of the envelop being such as to securely retain the inclosed matter while permit-ting it to be readily opened for the purpose of inspection; and the invention is designed, more especially, as an improvement upon the construction of envelop set forth in Letters Patent No. 941,392, granted to me November 30, 1909.

Figure l is a plan view of my envelop in unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a View similar t-o Fig. l, but with the supplemental portions of the side flaps folded. Fig. 3 is a view showing the envelop partially completed. Fig. 4 is a view showing the envelop complete. Fig. 5 is a view in cross section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

The general construct-ion of the envelop blank embraced by my present invention is the same as that set forth in my hereinbefore mentioned Letters Patent No. 941,392. That is to say, the envelop comprises a front portion l, side iiaps 2 and 3 which, when folded and sealed, constitute the back portion of the envelop, an end flap 4 that corresponds with the usual sealing flap of the envelop and an unsealed inspection flap 5.

The precise dimension and shape of the body and flaps of the envelop may be varied as desired.

Across the interior of the body of the envelop extends the supplemental strip 6 which, as in my aforesaid Patent No. 941,392, will coperate with the flaps 2 and 43 in forming a pocket` to receive the unsealed end flap 5 of the envelop. In the envelop set forth in my Patent No. 941,392, the supplemental strip extended merely between the lines 7 and 8 whereon the flaps 2 and 3 were folded, but in my present invention the end portions 6a and 6b of the supplemental strip 6 extend across the lines 7 and 8 and overlap the flaps 2 and 3, as shown. The flaps 2 and 3 are provided respectively at their` ends with supplemental flaps 2EL and 3u, the purpose of which will presently appear.

In forming my improved envelop, the blank will be cut with the several flaps 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 and and gum will be applied along the edges of the liaps 2, 2, 3, 3 and 4 and gum will also be applied transversely from side to side of the iiaps 2 and 3, as shown at 2'2 and 3C. The supplemental strip 6 will be placed in position with its ends overlapping the flaps 2 and 3 and the upper corners of the strip 6 will be united by the gummed portions 2c and 3c to said liaps, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawing. By this means the supplemental strip 6 will be securely held in position while the folding of the envelop is being effected, and inasmuch as the supplemental strip 6 is thus held at both ends, all danger' of the displacement of the strip after it has been set in position, will be avoided. rlihe supplemental flaps 2a and 3a will be turned over on to the flaps 2 and 3, and the inner ends of these supplemental flaps 2a and 3a will be united to the ends 6a and 6b of the supplemental strip 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

By forming the supplemental strip 6 with the end extensions 62l and 6" overlapping the side flaps 2 and 3, two distinct advantages are attained, viz., first, the supplemental strip 6 is securely gumnied at both ends to the flaps 2 and 3, so that during the subsequent forming operations the strip will be prevented from shifting out of place and, second, the end portions 6a and 6b of the supplemental strip 6 will eiiectively strengthen both ends of the envelop at the points which are subjected to the greatest strain in the operation of opening and closing the envelop when its contents are to be inspected. After the strip 6 has been set in position and the supplemental flaps 2EL and 3d have been folded down, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the unsealed flap 5 will then be turned over on to the supplemental strip 6, as shown in Fig. 3, and the flap 2 will be folded over the body portion l and over the supplemental strip 6 and flap 5, and the layer of gum 2c will firmly unite the flap 2 to the supplemental strip 6, adjacent the innermost edge of said strip. The flap 3 will then be turned over upon the body l, the supplemental strip 6, and the flap 5, and the outer gummed edge of the flap 3 Will overlap and be sealed to the edge of the flap 2, While the gummed surface 3C of the ap 3 Will be securely united to the supplemental strip 6 adjacent its innermost edge.

It Will thus be seen that the unsealed flap 5 Will be held Within a pocket formed by the supplemental strip 6 and the flaps 2 and 3, but after the printed matter or the like has been placed Within the completed envelop and the usual flap 4L has been sealed, the unsealed flap 5 can be readily Withdrawn and replaced when the contents of the envelop are to be inspected. Inasmuch as both ends of the pocket that receives the unsealed Hap 5 are reinforced by the extensions 6a and 6" of the supplemental strip 6, the danger of tearing out the ends of the pockets is reduced to a minimum. So, also, the lapping of the supplemental flaps 2a and 3a on to the ends 6 and Gb of the strip 6 serves to materially strengthen such end portions of the strip.

Inasmuch as the gummed surfaces 2C and 3C of the Haps 2 and 3 extend from side to side thereof and are in line with the upper portion of the supplemental strip 6, all the gumming of the blank may be done at one .operation and it is not necessary otherwise to apply gum to the surface of the supplemental strip, since the inner portions of the gummed surfaces 2C and 3 serve to unite the upper corners of the strip 6 to the flaps 2 and 3.

Having thus described my invention, What l claim as ne7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. An envelop comprising` a front portion, a back portion, flaps, and an interior supplemental strip for forming With the back portion a pocket to receive one of the iaps,

said supplemental ystrip being gunnned to the back portion and .havingboth of its ends extending over and .gummedto the iflaps adjacent thereto.

2. An envelop comprising a front portion, :i a back portion formed of side flaps, a sealingliap, an inspection flap and an interior supplemental strip for forming with the back portion a pocket to receive said inspection Hap, said supplemental strip being longer than thev interiorfdimensi'on of the envelop and overlapping each of said side flaps, each of said side naps-being provided With a gummed surface extending from side to side thereof in line with the upper portion of said supplemental strip, said gummed surfaceserving to unite the upper corners of said strip to the side flaps While said iaps are in unfoldedvposition and serving,favhen the side flaps are folded, to unite them to the supplemental strip adjacent its upper edge.

3. An envelop comprising a front portion, a back portion formed of flaps carried by the front portion and a separate supplemental strip, tWo of said flaps and said supplemental strip being secured together-to form a pocket in said back portion between said flapsl and said supplemental strip and open along one edge of the envelop to removably receive an inspection flap, said supplemental strip having extended end portions overlapping the iaps `that form the back portionand secured thereto, land said-two flaps having supplemental flaps folded over the end portions of said supplemental strip.
