Specication of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. VOGELI, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of'San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card Systems, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide an improvement in card systems by 10 which, out of a series of cards arranged by the usual alphabetical index, cards of any desired grou taneously shi ted out of registry with the remaining cards for the pur/pose of inspe'ction or removal.

The invention has many applications, but to exemplify its utility, I have herein shown it as applied to a card system for dunning and following up of overdue accounts, in

which-there are marked on cards memoranda of bills as they become due. The cards corresponding to the several accounts are arranged according to an alphabetical index in the usual manner, so that any desired card can, when the name of the creditor is known,

be immediately withdrawn; but, in addition there are provided means whereby all the cards relating to debts, or other matter which are due to receive attention on a particular day can be projected from the reto be attended to on that particular date without disturbing the remaining card.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing certain of the cards projected; Fig. 3 is a cross section; Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional View; Fig. 5 isa detail sectional view and Fig. 6 is a detail front view of a foot.

Referring to the` drawing, 1 indicates a box in which the cards are kept. Secured to the inner sides of the Walls of the box are two ledges 2, upon which the ends of the cards 3 rest.

4 indicates a follower, of common oon-v struction, which is movable on ledges 5 at the sides of the box, and holds the right when the box is not full.

Extending across the lower portion of the cards upor selection may be simul-y box between the sides thereof at the rear end is a bar 6, and also extending between said sides, and at about the same level as the bar 6, is a shaft 7 upon which is a roller. 8. Supported partly upon the said roller are a number of cam strips 9, the front ends of said strips being formed on their under sides with shoulders 10, which are adapted to engage the lower edge of an opening ortransverse slot 11 formed in the front wall of the box, the front ends of said cam strips projecting through said opening. Said front ends 12 are bent alternately upward and downward, and formed into loops or eyes 13 which may be engaged by the nger of the operator. The upper edge 14 of .each cam strip is beveled, and lits within a groove 15 formed in the lower edge of a corresponding lifter strip 16, there being one lifter strip for each cam strip. The lifter strips and cams are all of the same thickness, there being in the present instance 31 of each, one for each day of the month. The 31 lifter strips occupy the full width ofthe box with the exception of two dummy strips 17 and the two ledges 2, one of each at each side of the box, and in like manner the cam strips occupy the full width of the box with the exception of the two dummy strips and ledges. Each cam strip is formed on its under side with a concavity 18 which rests upon the roller 8 and is comparatively narrow vertically except at its rear end where they greatly increase in height, so as to form a wedge 19. 22, 23, formed in the front and rear ends of the box, said lugs limiting the upward movement of the .lifter strip. Each lifter strip is formed with a long recess or cavity 24 in its lower edge, which 1s engaged by the cam strip.

0n each of the cards there are printed, near its lower edge, 31 divisions or marks 25 corresponding to the days of the month, and numbered in succession as shown at 25, and to each card, when necessary, can be detachably connected a metallic foot 26 having a pointed lower end which engages a groove 27 in the upper edge .of one of the lifter strips. Each foot is formed with a pointed lower end, with a straight edge 28 extending transversely to the general length of the foot and portions extending upwar from said straight edge and adapted to pass on opposite sides of the card and to grip the same with spring pressure. An important advantage of this construction of the card and foot is that, when it is desired to change the day on which the card is to be used, .the foot can be readily slid along the lower edge of the card to the mark corresponding to the proper day, without-having to remove the foot from the card.

The operation isas follows z-The feet are arranged on such cards as are necessary to be used during the month according to the days of the month when it is desired to severally project the same from the remaining cards. As each day of the month ar rives, the operator first raises the corresponding cam strip so as to permit the shoulder 10 thereon to be free of the edge of the transverse slot l1 inthe front of the box, and then draws the cam strip forward, the shoulders l() of the adjacent cam strips preventing these cam strips also moving forward. This motion causes the lower edge of the cam strip to ride upon the roller 8, thus, by reason of its tapering form, raising the corresponding lifter strip and thereby also raising all of the cards, the feet of which project directly over the groove of said lifter strip. Thereby, all the cards which are to receive attention on that particular day will be lifted above the others. Upon pushing in again the cam strip, the lifter strip drops back into place and cards that have been projected can be pushed down to a level with the remaining cards; but, as long as the cam strip remains extended, the lifter sti'ip can not be lowered.

I claim l. In combination with a suitable receptacle, a series of information cards, the lower edge of each card being marked with a continuous series, extending in full length of said edge, of equi-distant marks, Ya movable foot on the bottom of each card variably arranged in roximit to one of said marks, a series of lifter strips extending below the cards transversely thereof, each arranged to engage all of the feet attached to cards in proximity to one of said marks, and a series of cam strips each formed with a cam upon its u perr ed e and located beneath a correspon ing li r strip and -being longitudinally movable, and arranged, when moved longitudinally, to raise the corresponding lifter strip, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a suitable receptacle, a series of information cards, the lower edge of e h card beig marked with a continoiiea'extending in full length of sai foot/on the bottom of each card variably arranged in proximity to one of said marks ge, of'equi-distant marks, a movableand having a pointed lower end, a series of lifter strips extending below the cards transversely thereof, each arranged to engage all of the feet attached to cards in proximity to one of said marks, the upper edge of said lifter strip being grooved longitudinally to receive the pointed lower ends of the corresponding feet, and a series of cam strips corresponding to the series of lifter strips,

each cam strip being longitudinally movable, and arranged, when moved longitudinally, to raise the corresponding lifter strip, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a suitable receptacle, a series of information cards, a movable foot on the bottom of each card variably arranged in proximity' to one of said marks, a series of lifter strips extending below the cards transversely thereof, each arranged to i engage all of the feet attached to cards in proximity to one of said marks, and a series of cam strips corresponding to the series of lifter strips, each cam strip being longitudinally movable, and arranged, when moved longitudinally, to raise the corresponding lifter strip, each cam strip being formed' with a shoulder, and the front wall of the receptacle being formed with a transverse opening, the lower edge of which is adapted to engage said shoulder to prevent the cam strip being drawn forward until raised to permit said shoulder to pass over said edge, substantially as described.

4. In combination with a suitable-receptacle, a series of information cards, the lower edge of'each card being marked with a continuous series, extending in full length of said edge, of equi-distant marks, a movable foot on the bottom of each card variablyarranged in proximity to one of said marks, a series of lifter strips extending below the 4cards transversely thereof, each arranged to engage all of the feet attached to cards in proximity to one of said marks, and a series of camstrips corresponding to the series of lifter strips, each cam strip being longitudinally movable, `and arranged, when moved longitudinally, to raise the corresponding lifter strip, revoluble supporting means extending transversel beneath all of said cam strips and means or supporting said revoluble means, substantially as described.

5. In combination with a suitable receptacle, a series of information cards, each having a straight lower edge, and marked adjacent to said lower edge with a series of uniformly s aced indicating marks, a foot for each car formed with a transverse straight edge adapted to engage the straight edge of the card, and two members extending upward above said straight edge adapted to engage opposite sides of the card, and to grasp the same `by spring pressure, the lower end of said foot being pointed, a series of lifter strips each extending longitudinally within said receptacle and transversely to my hand in the presence of two subscribing said cards, each lifter strip having in its wltnesses.
