CABLE-CARRIER APPARATUS.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. AMSDEN, of Littleton, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable- Carrier Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cable carrier apparatus and its object is to provide means for automatically closing and locking the cover of a carrier when the same is despatched.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated a construction embodying my invention in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cable carrier despatching station showing the carrier with cover open about to be despatched. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover in engagement with and partially closed by the cover closing mechanism. Fig. 8 shows the carrier about to engage the cable with the cover closed and mechanism operating to lock the cover in closed position. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device showing a carrier being despatched.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents the tracks of an ordinary despatching station secured to and held in position by brackets B and having the usual bends or openings D therein for placing carriers into cooperation with the tracks.
C represents the endless driving or propelling cable the direction of travel being indicated by arrows.
F is a cable carrier of a construction particularly set forth and claimed in my application for United States Letters Patent, Serial No. 418,221, filed February 28, 1908, comprising a cover G pivoted at M to the body F and which cover G is normally held open by a spring N mounted on the pivot or in M. p H is a lock lever pivoted at J to the cover G and carries a latch K adapted to engage with a lip L on the body of the carrier F to lock said cover in closed position.
S is a stud or pin fixed to lever H and adapted to operate in slot T to limit the movement of said lever.
Attached to the bottom of the carrier F is the usual fiber plate U and ears V which Specification of Letters Patent.

serve to guide the carrier along the tracks and permit its being placed into cooperation with said tracks through openings D.
R is the usual member secured to one of the brackets B adjacent openings D to open the regular cable grip located on the bottom of the carrier in case the same should have been accidentally closed and O is a device for closing the grip upon the cable C when the carrier is in the proper position.
E is a curved guide rail secured to the upper part of brackets B and is adapted to engage and gradually close the cover G as the carrier is moved by the operator along the tracks A and P is a member secured to one of the brackets B and located in position to engage with the end W of the lock lever H, when the cover G has been closed by guide rail E, to move said lever and throw latch K into engagement with lip L to lock the cover closed.
The operation is as follows,-The operator places the ears V through openings D as shown in Fig. 1 placing the carrier into cooperation with the tracks A. The cash or other articles are then inserted into the carrier and same is moved along the tracks by the operator until the cover G is engaged by the guide rail E which gradually closes said cover as shown in Fig. 2. When the carrier has reached the position shown in Fig. 3 the cover G has been entirely closed and the curved face of the member P engages the end WV of lock lever l-l, moving the same from the position shown in Fig. 4 until the latch K engages lip L locking the cover G securely closed. The cable grip on the bottom of the carrier is now engaged by the device O which closes the grip upon the cable C causing the carrier to be transmitted along tracks A to its destination.
Having thus described my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,-
1. In a cable carrier apparatus, a track, carriers having normally open covers adapted to travel on said track, a cable for driving the carriers along said track, despatching means for placing carriers into coperation with said track and said cable, means adapted to engage and close into locking position the cover of said carriers when placed into coperation with said track and said cable, and means for automatically locking said covers closed.
2. In a cable carrier apparatus, a track or Way7 carriers adapted to travel on said track or Way, a traveling cable for driving said carriers, means for placing` said carriers into coperation with said track or Way and said cable a guide rail adapted to engage and close into locking position the cover of said carriers when placed into cooperation With said track and said cable, and means for automatically locking said covers closed.
3. In a cable carrier apparatus, a track or way, carriers having normally open covers adapted to travel on said track or Way, a cable for driving said carriers alongsaid track or Way, a despatching station for placing carriers into coperation with said track andfsaid cable, a guide rail located at said despatching station and adapted to engage and close the covers of carriers despatched, locking means located on said carriers adapted to be operated to lock thev covers closed, and means adapted to engage said locking means when said covers are closed to lock the same in closed posit-ion.
