LABEL CABINET AND MOISTENER.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, CLAUDE K. Basri, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county 0f Stephenson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label Cabinets and Moisteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rIhis invention relates to devices for holding and moistening gummedl labels and is preferably termed a label cabinet and moistener.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a novel form of moist-ener for such devices.
A third object of the invention is to provide a means whereby one moistener may be utilized to meisten labels delivered from a number of different slots.
A fourth object of the invention is to provide a novel form of moistener holding drawer and delivery chute therefrom.
IVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of a cabinet preferably provided with a plurality of drawers and having one or more moisteners of novel construction moving across the base of the cabinet and so arranged as to meisten the labels from any of said drawers.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cabinet and moistener constructed in accordance with this invention, one of the moisteners being shown in operative position while the other is shown in inoperative position. Fig. 2 is an end view of such a cabinet. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the front of a cabinet constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 4 is a section through one of the drawers and the moistening apparatus in such a cabinet. Fig. 5 is a view showing the means employed for holding the moistener in operative position. Fig. 6 is Speciication of Letters Patent.

rIhe numeral 10 indicates the body of the easing and this casing is preferably provided with a plurality of openings 11 arranged along the front thereof, said openings being so disposed that there will be several horizontal rows, all of the openings in any one of the rows being in horizontal alinement. The casing 10 is also provided at its rear end with suitable openings 12 wherein are held drawers 13 provided with drawer pulls 14 of any preferred character. To the upper edge of these drawers are attached drop strips 15 which fit in suit-able rabbets made in the upper edge of the opening 12 and serve to prevent the drawer being pushed too far forward. Ihe forward end of the drawer comes flush with the face of the cabinet and the front board 16 is cut away to allow the positioning therein of a delivery tube which comprises a top plate 17 having inwardly bent sides 18 which extend below the top plate. One of the sides 18 has attached thereto a resilient strip 19 which normally bears against the under side of the top plate. T he forward edge of the top plate 17 extends beyond the guides 18 and is provided with a cutting edOe 20. This cutting edge is sharpened as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 so that material drawn thereacross may be readily torn off. Through the sides of the drawer 13 extends a shaft 21 on which is positioned a roll of labels as indicated at 22. In order to prevent this roll of labels from accidentally unrolling a spring 23 is held in the drawer and is preferably of what is commonly known as the C spring type. The middle portion of the under side of the roll 22 rests on the middle of this spring and as the paper is unwound from the roll the middle of the spring rises up and bears constantly against the lower side of said roll. The paper from the roll 22 is spread out through the delivery tube and in order to secure this delivery tube on the front of the drawer there is provided a cover plate 24; which extends over the delivery tube and is securely attached to the drawer front by mea-ns of screws 25.
Mounted upon one end of the casing are arms 26 provided with angle portions 27 from which extend forwardly directed portions 28. At the opposite end of the casing are secured straight arms 29 and each of these arms is attached to the casing by means of a pivot screw 30 whereon the arm is rotatable. The arms are further provided with slots 3l concentric with the pivot screws 30 and through these slots 31 pass thumb screws 32 which enable the forward ends of the arms to be adjusted for height. Carried on the arms 28 and 29 and securely attached thereto are guide rails 30". On each of the guide rails 30 is mounted a moistener comprising an outer casing 31 adapted to convey water or other liquid. Through this outer casing passes a shaft 32 whereon is held a substantially semi-cylindrical member 33 provided with a felt or other fabric covering as indicated at 34. The felt covering is held upon the member 33 by means of suitable bands 35 which pass around the covering and are received in suitable matches 3G formed in the member 33. This member 33 is rotatable with the shaft and the shaft 32 is further provided with a crank arm 37 adapted to engage a retaining spring 38 when the member is raised to the position indicated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. Upon the bottom of the casing 3l are provided lugs 39 which engage over the bar 30 and serve to hold the moistener securely on the bar while at the same time permitting its movement longitudinally thereof. It is to be understood that there are one of these bars and one of these moisteners for each of the rows of labels and furthermore the size and proportions of the various moisteners and delivery tubes with their drawers are in proportion to the width of the labels.
In the operation of the device when it is desired to moisten a label contained in one of the drawers the moistener operable along the row to which said drawer belongs is moved to position immediately in front thereof and the semi-cylindrical member 33 is turned up to the position indicated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. The label is then drawn out and by reason of the arrangement of the upper member 17 and the felt covering 34 the drawn out label is pressed against the felt covering and moistened thereby. It will be noted that this frictional contact of the label with the felt covering causes the moistener to rotate so that all parts of the label are evenly moistened. Vhen the label has been drawn out its full length it is raised and torn off against the sharpened edge 20 when it may be readily attached to the bundle or other package which it is desired to label. The arcuate members 33 are made of such length around the arc as to accommodate the various sizes of labels so that when the label has been entirely pulled out the member is allowed to fall back by its own gravity into the tank and there be moistened for a fresh label. In this manner the labels may be moistened along an entire row of drawers with one moistener while other moisteners supply the additional rows. There has thus been provided a simple and etiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is z- 1. In a label holder and moistener, a cabinet, a plurality of label holding drawers provided with alined delivery tubes held in said cabinet, and a moistener supported from said cabinet and movable into position adjacent any one of the delivery tubes.
2. In a label holder and moistener, a cabinet, a plurality of label holding drawers provided with alined delivery tubes and held in said cabinet, a guide bar supported from said cabinet, and a moistener carried on said guide bar and movable into position adjacent any one of the delivery tubes.
3. In a label holder and moistener, a cabinet, a plurality of label holding drawers provided with alined delivery tubes, a snpport attached to said cabinet, a guide bar carried in front of said cabinet on said support, and a moistener held upon said guide bar to move longitudinally thereof into position adjacent any one of the delivery tubes.
4. In a label holder and moistener, a cabinet, a plurality of label holding drawers held in said cabinet and each provided with a delivery tube, all of said delivery tubes being alined, supports pivoted at one end to the cabinet and provided each with an arcuate slot concentric with the pivot point, thumb nuts passing through said arcuate slot to hold the support in adjusted position, a guide bar carried by said support, and a moistener carried on said guide bar and movable into position adjacent any one of the delivery tubes.
5. In a label holder and moistener, a moistener comprising a tank, a shaft provided with a crank handle extending across the tank, a segmentocylindrical member mounted to rotate with the shaft, and a spring friction catch to releasably hold the said member in operative position.
6. In a label holder and moistener, a moistener comprising a tank, a shaft provided with a crank handle extending across said tank, a segmentocylindrical member mounted to rotate with the shaft and provided with an absorbent covering, and a spring friction catch to releasably hold the said member in operative position.
7. In a label holder and moistener, a cabinet, a plurality of label holding drawers provided with alined delivery tubes, and a moistener comprising a tank, a shaft provided with a crank handle extending across said tank, a segmentocylindrical member mounted to rotate with the shaft, and a spring friction catch to releasably hold the said member in operative position, said moistener being arranged to move into position adjacent any one of the delivery tubes.
8. In a label holder and moistener, a cabinet, a plurality of label holding drawers provided with alined delivery tubes held in said cabinet, supports attached to said cabinet, a guide bar carried on the support, and a moistener carried on said guide bar and movable into position adjacent any one of the delivery tubes, said moistener comprising` a tank, a shaft provided with a crank handle extending, across said tank, a segmentocylindrical member mounted to rotate with the shaft and provided with an absorbent covering adapted to crush against one of the delivery tubes when in operative relation thereto, and a springfriction catch lto releasably hold said member in operative position.
