To allwhom it may concern:

Be. it known that I, ADAM Lose, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shells for Cartridges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof. 1

This invention has for itsobject to cause the igniting flash produced by the cap of the cartridge to-travel from the center of the base of the powder charge radially and simultaneously forward to the whole cross section area of the main body of the charge; and I accomplish my object yproviding the butt end of the cartridge with a conical flash chamber. That is, the powder space atthe butt end of the cartridge being tapered downward to the central cap-hole in the butt end of the cartridge. By such arrangement is avoided the waste of energy during the interval that the flash, under ordinary conditions, would travel laterally and backward; for by my improved construction the mth of the flash is confined to a radial and florward direction, and communicates the igniting flash simultaneously to the entire cross-section area of the main body of the powder.

The result obtained by my improvements are: The quantity of powder at present used in the common straight shell.may be reduced without diminishing the degree of force of penetration imparted to the projectile, compared with that obtained from a normal char eof powder; or, by using the resent stan ard unit or quantity of powder in my improved cartridge, the force of penetration is reatly increased. In my experiments, I ave found this increase in the penetration to be as great as twothirds over the degree of penetration obtained from the same quantity of powder Furthermore,by reason of eliminating the backwa'rd movement of the igniting. flash in the base of the .powder charge, the 'recoil of the gun is diminished.

My improvement can be added to any common form of shell by merely inserting, 1n
