PROJEGTILE.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, MATHIAS PA UETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carney, in the county ofrMenominee and I 6 State of 'Michigam have invented new and" useful Improvements in Projectiles, of which the following is a specification. g
This invention relates to projectiles and more particularly to that form of pro ect1le designed to emit fumes or gases upon explosion of the charge carried by the shell.
The object is to provide in a device of the character indicated an improved construction which shall render the missile more efficient in operation than those heretofore employed.
A further object is to provide certain means of novel construction for firing the charge. 1
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of :elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a View of the longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of another form of the device.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the form shown in Fig. 3. y
Incarrying out my invention I'employ a casing provided with a head 12, said head being cut away asindicated at 14 and threaded for engagement with the internally threaded portionof the flange 15 of the body portion of the shell. The pro ect1le proper is made of steel and the nose portion 18 formed of softer metal suchaslead which I will permit the nose to collapse under improjectile in pin 20 mounted within a bore 21 in said nose portion and extending through a bore 22 in the head proper. A recess is provided at 23 at a point opposite the cap 24, this cap bein located at the end of the central boreor c 13.111181 25 in which the main. charge is placed.
Communicating with the centrallongitudinal-channel 25 are a plurality of bores or chambers 28 extending radially and terminating at the surface of the shell, any suitable number being employed. These cham- 'bers 28 are filled with chloroform or other "suitable material and are closed at opposite Specification of Letters Patent.

ends by means of wadding designated 29 and 30. The additional chambers or channels 31 communicate with bore 25 and extend toward the butt end of the shell terminat'ing at the points 32. These channels diverge with reference to each other and are intended to discharge their contents in a direction approximately opposite to the direction in which the projectile is traveling. In the event that the shell strikes a wooden structure or target of any character and penetrates to a, given distance bcfore exploding, these rearwardly extending channels will discharge their contents, Whereas those extending radially from the bore may be obstructed owing to the entrance of the shell into the structure of the target, whatever the latter may be.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 the same principle is carried out, but the chambers for receiving explosive material and the chloroform or other similar substance are differently located. The body portion of the p1'0]ectile is designated 35 and is formed of steel as is also the head 36, the nose portion 37 being of softer material as in the previous instance, lead being usually employed for this purpose.
The firing pin is designated 38 and extends through a bore 39 in the nose portion 37 and through a registering bore 40 in the head proper. The head is provided with a recess formed by making the inner portion thereof concave as shown at 41 and the firing pin projects beyond the wall of this recess into position for engagement with the cap 42 mounted at the end of the magazine 43 carrying the explosive charge. This magazine may comprise a channel or series of channels extending around the core 45 of the projectile and in a longitudinal direction. Another channel or series of channels 44 concentric with channels 43 are adapted for the reception of chloroform or other similar material.
The head is connected with the body portion by means of a flanged member 47 cooperating with an annular threaded channel 48, whereby the elements are firmly secured. It will be observed that in the second form above described the openings extending from the chambers formed within the shell are towardthe rear and these openings are suit,- ably closed as by means of devices 50 and 51.
What is claimed is;
1. In a projectile, a body portion provided with a channel extending longitudinally thereof, a head having connection with said body portion and provided with a collapsible nose piece, a firing pin positioned within said head and operatlve upon ,the collapse of the nose piece, and receptacles for containing material adapted to emit fumes upon said head having the explosion of a charge,
a concave end portion and the nose piece having a convex end portlon cooperating with the concave portion and having a bore being flared toward its outer end, said firing pin r6unded at its end conforming to the curvature of the-collapsible nose piece, and being tapered to conform to the flared bore.
2. In a projectile, a body portion provided with a series'of channels extending longitudinally and located around the main axis of the projectile, said bodyportion including a central bore within said series of channels, a second series of channels concentric with that first named and adapt-ed'to contain material emitting fumes upon the explosion of a charge Within the channels first named, sald channels first/named converging point adjacent a cap toward one end ad acent the head, and a cap located between said converging portions and opposite the end of the core, a head and a nose piece for said projectile, and a v firing pin extending through said head and nose piece to a point ad acent the cap.
a 3. In a projectile, a body portion provided with a plurality of concentrically arranged V and longitudinally extending channels, certain of the channels being-adapted to contain an explosive charge and others to contain material emitting fumes upon the [explosion of the charge, the
body portion including a central bore of reduced diameter at its for Ward end, and the inner series of channels converging toward said reduced portion of the core and extending beyond said reduced portion providing a recess for receiving a cap, a head, and a nose portion connected with the body portion, a firing pin extending through said head and nose portion to a recess.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. MATHIAS PAQUETTE. I
