E. P. HULBERT.
HINGEr APPLICATION FILED MAY 4, 1909.

OF SOUTH NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.

ostico.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. I-IULBERT, citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in hinges for the lids of shipping, storing or display vessels, and the invention has for its object a simple and eflicient construction of device of this character which will permit a slight play of the lid at the hinge so that the lid will lie flat upon the gasket or similar element when it is swung over the opening that it is designed to close. v
Specifically considered, my invention relates to improvements in display cases for oysters or similar commodities, in which the body portion of the case contains one or more receptacles, around which ice is packed, and in order to kee out the air, dust, or other impurities. Tie rim of these receptacles or containers, at the top of the body portion are tightened by gaskets of rubber or the like, and a preferably plate glass lid is secured to the top of the body portion by hinges, so that it may be swung down over the receptacles and securely close the same by contact with the gaskets, while at the same time, the contents may be viewed through the lid or cover, increasing the salability of the oysters or other commodities by adding to the attractiveness of the case in which they are displayed for sale. As above indicated, if the plate glass lid is hinged at one edge, without any play at such point, the glass is liable to be cramped or strained when swung to a closed position over the gaskets, and it is also liable to leave an opening through which dust may enter, and my invention aims to prevent these disadvantageous features, avoid any strain upon the glass, and at the same time securely seal the receptacles when the lid is closed down over them, by the provision of an improved construction of hinge.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements, and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention,
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 4, 1909.
Patented May 3, 191C. Serial No. 493,816.
reference is to be had to the following def i scription and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display case embodying' the improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view partly in section, and partly in elevation of one of the hinges employed; and, Fig. 3 is a similar view, the parts beine' differently sectioned, and shown in different positions.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of a display case in which I have shown my invention embodied for the purpose of illustration, 2 designates the relatively stationary top thereof, 3 the containers for the oysters or other articles, and 4 the rubber gaskets around the rims of said containers.
5 designates the plate glass lid or cover that is designed to be closed down over the gaskets el so as to rest upon said gaskets solidly and positively and eftectually close the same as against the entrance of warm air, dust, or other impurities.
In carrying out my invention the lid or cover 5 is provided in the present instance with one of my improved hinges at two adjacent corners. Each hinge embodies an ear 11 which preferably projects beyond the adjacent corner of the lid as shown said ear being formed with an aperture by which it is mounted upon the pintle screw 12 that is secured in the preferably many sided head 13 of a hinge post 14. Each of the posts 14; is mounted for free movement within certain bounds, in a thimble 15, and the thimbles are respectively mounted in openings formed in the top 2 of the body portion 1. Each of these thimbles 15 is formed with exterior threads as shown, and upper and lower nuts 16 are mounted on the thimble, to engage opposite surfaces of the top 2 so as to secure the thimble rigidly in place so that it will constitute a bearing in which the corresponding post 111 may move up and down freely. The pivoted movement of the post is limited by means of a suitable stop device such as the screw 17 which works in the interiorly threaded lower end of the post.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the lid 5 will have a certain amount of play where it is hinged to the lid 2 and thereby will be capable ot being swung solidly or evenly over the gaskets l without any cramping or binding of the lid which would tend to break the same or strain the joints. It is also evident that the parts may be readily manufactured and readily applied and adjusted in position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. The combination with parts to be hinged together, of a bracket secured to one of said parts, a thimble secured to the other part and formed with a smooth bore, a hinge post mounted in the bore of the thimble and of a length greater than the length of the thimble whereby the hinge post will have a limited free movement in the thimble, and a pivotal connection between the bracket and hinge post.
2. The combination with parts to be hinged together, of a bracket secured to one of said parts, a thimble mounted in the other part, nuts screwed on said thimble and securing the Same to such part, a hinge post mounted for a limited movement in said thimble, and a pivotal connection between said hinge post and said bracket.
3. The combination with parts to be hinged together of a bracket secured to one of said parts, a thimble secured to the other part, a hinge post mounted for movement in said thimble, a screw working in one end of said post and limiting the movement thereof in one direction, and a pivotal connection between said bracket and said hinge post.
4. A hinge, comprising a bracket, a hinge post, a pintle extending laterally from said hinge post and in which the bracket is pivotally mounted, a thimble mounted on said hinge post and exteriorly threaded, nuts working on said thimble, and a screw working in one end of said post to limit the relative movement of the post and thimble.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
F. T. SULLIVAN, I. M. COLEMAN.
