WELL-TUBE HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN L. PRESTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dripping Springs, in the county of Hays and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in ell-Tube Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to well tube holders, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple and eflicient device for removing well tubes or pipes in which means are provided for clamping pipes or tubes of various diameters and for lifting the same out of the well.
Another object of the invention is to provide a'combined clamp and handle for lifting well piping, said clamp and handle be ing of simple construction and one which can be readily applied to pipes of different diameters to clamp and hold the same in position to be readily lifted out of the well.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a well tube holder made in accordance with my invention, said holder being secured to a section of well tube. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the clamp secured to a small pipe or tube. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the holder connected to a pipe of large diameter. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4- 1: of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1. designates a metal yoke of substantially U- shape in plan, said yoke having a binding screw 2 extending through the same. Pivotally connected inside the yoke 1 is a U- shaped jaw member 4 having a curved jaw 5 on the inner face thereof, said jaw being corrugated, as at 6, to engage the outer surface of a pipe 7. The jaw member 4 is pivotally connected to the yoke 1 by means of bolts having enlarged heads 3, said bolts Specification of Letters Patent.

each extending through a slot 8 formed in the opposite ends thereof, thus permitting the jaw member to slide within the yoke 1. Stops 9 which serve to prevent the jaw member from moving out of alinement with the yoke in one direction are secured to the jaw member 4: and provided with hooks 10 which engage the upper edge of the yoke 1 to hold the jaw in alinement with the yoke. The ends of the yoke 1 are connected by means of a pin or bolt 11, and surrounding the pin or bolt 11 is a series of sleeves 12. Pivoted upon the pin 11 are adjustable clamping arms 13, said arms having inwardly curved portions 14:, the ends of which are adapted to contact at different points with the pipe 7. To adjust the clamping arms 13 outwardly to clamp a large size pipe 8, Fig. 3, a turn buckle 15 is mounted upon inwardly extending threaded studs 16, said arms being spread by the buckle in an obvious manner.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows :A pipe is placed between the jaw 5 and the ends of the clamping arms 13, and by turning the binding screw 2, the pipe is firmly secured in the holder. By lifting the holder the pipe or tube may be withdrawn from the well.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a holder made in accordance with my invention is of simple construction, can be quickly connected to a pipe and provides reliable and eificient means for lifting the pipe from the well.
I claim:
1. A well tube holder comprising a U- shaped yoke, a jaw member pivotally and slidably mounted in said yoke and provided with stops, a pin connecting the opposite sides of the yoke, clamping arms pivotally mounted on said pin, threaded studs projecting inwardly from said arms, a turn buckle for adjusting the arms, and a binding screw for forcing the jaw member against the pipe.
