Description

/ N VE N TOR A TTOHNEYS W, P. FRANCIS., COMPOSITE BEAM STRUCTURE. APPLIGATIOHFILBD AUG. 21, 1909. 's
'i is disclosed in the structure illustrated in WILLIAM PINCKNEY FRANCIS, OF PENSCOLA, FLORIDA.
COMPOSITE BEAM STRUCTURE,
Patented May 3, 1910.
seriai No. 513,937.
Specification of Letters Patent.
esteis.,
application sied august 21, i909.
the rod and anchor n'iembers' are suitably secured by screw nuts 17, 17. The truss rods 15, 15 and the anchors 13, 13 are provided in numbers to suit the demands of the varilons` structures to which the beam is applied. T he length of the anchors 13, 13 and of the vertical extensions 1G, 16 is regulated by the heigh? of the masonry imposed upon the rabbets 10, 10 of the flanges of the beam 9.
Extended across 'the under face of the flanges of the beam 9 are tiles 18, 18. These are provided to protect Vthe flanges from heat and to preserve the appearance of- -inasonry in the completed beam. Formed ir the tiles 18, 18 are metal bands 19, 19, tli up )er extensions 20, 20 of which are adapte' to e bent over to rest upon the rabtets 1 10 of tlie flanges of the beam 9; l
At each end of. the beam 9 thgre are bolted'float anchors 21, 21. These . nchors 21, 21 are bolted at 22, 22 to the w. a 12 of the beam 9.
To construct a beam formed in'accordance with the present invention the operation is as follows: The metal AT-beam 9 is laid across the gap between the piers'7, 7 and adjusted upon the ca plates 8,8. The facing tiles 18, 18 are i To all who-m 'it -mxiy concern:
Be it 'known that l, linnn-ni liNeiiNnY l Fnazciis, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident` ofv Pensacola, in the county o1"4 Escambia and State of Florida., have in vented a vnew and Improved Composite BeainStructure, (if-which the following is a full, cleai,"and exact description.
IAmong the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to pro videa construction wherein is combined the tensile strength of metal formation with the inimobility of masonry; to provide a coni- -posite structure of metal and masonry whereby the metal members are arranged in truss form; to provide a fireproof construe tion for acarrying beam; and to provide a construction which is simple, economical and elicient.
One embodimentot the present invention the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a beam and piers illustrated as partially completed and as constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, of `a beam and piers, showing the construction as partially conipleted; AFigc/3 is a plan view of a fragment of the metal beam used by me, illustrated as resting upon a carrying beam; Fig. 4 is across section of a beam taken on the line .4-4 in Fig. 2.
The piers 7, 7 shown in the accompanying drawings are constructed in accordance with the invention for which a patent was grantedto r'ne July 16, 1907, No. 860,364, to which reference is here, made. Seated upon capplates 8, 8 thereof is a steel T-beam 9. The flanges' of the /T -beam 9 are rabbeted, as shown at 10, 10, to form flat surfaces to receive the first layer 'of bricks 11, 11 supported upon the said beam. The web 12 of the beam 9fis perforated at suitable intervals to receive the bent ends of anchor rods 13, 13. The ,anchor -rods 13; 13 `are provided with body extensions of suitable length and at the IJilpper end with .hook extensions 14, 14..` rllhe webV 12 is also perforated to rebcnt ends of truss rods 15, 15. The truss-rods 1 5, 15 have vertical extensions 16, 1.6 the lower end of which are bent pori tions which are extended through 'perforations in the web 12 of the T-beam 9. All
en raised into position against the surfaces of the anges of the beam 9, and there held while the extensions 20, 20 are turned down over 4therabbets 10, 10 of the said beam. If needed, temporary wooden centers may be used to support the tiles 18, 18 in osition while the bricks of th body of the cam are being laid. The upper surface of the tiles 18, 18, where ex posed, and the rabbets 10, 10, are now spread with a layer of mortar to receive the bricks the beam. ' llie bricks 11, 11 are carefully laid, facing the saine with the tiles 1 8, 18. When the' walls of the beam are formed, and the filling placed in position, l prefer to float a suitable cement into the space surrounding the rods 13, 15 and 16. This cement floats intimately about the various rods constituting the anchors 13, 13 and the truss rods 15, 15 and the extensions 16, 16 in'such manner that when the cement sets these metal rods are held immovably in position. The extension of the various rods and anchors is such vthat their tensile strength is utilized to prevent any movement on the part of the kcomposite beam structure. Care is takenthat, the over-turned ends 14, 14 of the anchors designed to be super- 11, 11 of the lower layer of facing brick for .sonry of the beam,
.temporary wood'en centers shall rest solidly upon the layer of vbricks constituting the top layer, or the layer immediately adjacent, thereto. This. mechanical engagement of the anchors with 'the madisposes the said anchors in such'position that the said anchors is utilized to hold the masonry in fixed position. When the composite beam is completed it will be found that the floating anchors 21,'21 have become locked into the masonry of the piers?, 7 as the same are raised above the cap plates 8, 8. A floor 23 isA now laid, being supported by if desired, and by permanent metal bridging structure laid between and anchored ,on 4the composite beams above described. Y
Having thus described mynvention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a A composite beam structure comprising a metal beam having a central vertical extension and lateral extensions rabbeted at the tensile strength ofV I construction mounted upon said metall beam to encompass the said anchor rods arid truss i the outer edgeysilurality ot vertically disposed anchor vr s-secured to said metal beam; a plurality oi truss rods secured to said metal beam between the ends thereof and having vertical extensions connected to the said beam at-the ends thereof; masonry rods to immovably hold the same; a tile facing consisting of a plurality of suitable tiles extended across the bottom of said metal beam; and metal securing devices tixedly secured in said tiles and folded over the rabbeted portions of said. metalbeam for holding the said tiles upon said' beam.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 4 name to this specification inthe `presence of 4o two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM iPIRCKNEY FRANCIS.
