A TTRNE YS UNITED s'trATEs PATENT. onirica.
WALTER HARVEY ZACHBY, 0F ATLANTA, GEOBIA.
MOP-HEAD.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER HARVEY ZAoHnY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Atlanta, in the countyof Fulton and State of Geer a, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Mop- Heads, of which the following is a specification.
M invention is an improvement in mop hea s, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified, which, while simply constructed, will be e'licient -which may be cheaply manufactured, an
which will be capable of withstanding rough treatment without much injury.
Referrin to the drawings forming a part hereof z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved head. Fig. 2 is a lon itudinal section of the head. Fig. 3 is a p an view looking directly down upon the head., and
Fig. 4 is a side view of the sleeve.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings consists of a bolt composed of a threaded stem A, and a head B, and the head is provided with a transverse kerf C for receiving a screw driver or like instrument, and at diametrically opposite points, with resilient lateral extensions D an The extensions are in the shape of straps and extend outwardl ,and are then doubled or bent over upon t emselves, as at G, the free ends of the straps lying adjacent to the stem, as shown in Fig. 2.
A canopy or cover plate H, substantially conical in shape, is provided with a central threaded opening at its apex containing one or more threads through which the stem extends, and the bent over portions G of the straps are'engaged by the inner face of the cover plate, whenthe said plate is turned toward the head of the bolt. .The outer face of the cover plate is smoothly finished to make a neat a pearance, and the said surface is provide at opposite points and near the free edge with projections or bosses I, in order that the plate may be turned on the stem, or revented from turning when the handle to e described is turned.
The handle K is of any desired or usual construction, and the end of the handle adjacent to the head may or may not bereduced, as at M, to receive a ferrule N. The end of the handle is also provided with an Specification of Letters Patent. Application Bled December 4, 1909. Serial No. 531,344.

opening P, and an internally threaded sleeve Q is arranged in the opening. The outer end of/,the sleeve is laterall flanged, as at Q/Aan'd they flange is provi ed with prongs Q2, which engage the end of the handle to' To insert the material S of the mop, thel handle is turned to loosen the bolt, or the bolt may be removed. The material is passed between the bent over portions, and the handle is then turned to tighten the bolt. The extensions being of resilient material, when they engage the inclined inner surface of the cover plate, the sides of the doubled portlons are pushed together, thus gripping the material firmly.
To release the material, the motion of the handle is reversed, and the doubled over portions spring upward, thus freeing the material and permitting it to be withdrawn. During shipment, the head may be removed from the handle, and the heads packed in one receptacle and the handles in the other.
It will be evident that the improved head, While simply constructed, is efficient, and all the operative mechanism is concealed by the cover plate. When not in use, the parts may be separated, to permit the threads to dry, thus preventing rust, and increasing the longevity of the head.
As an article of manufacture, the device would possibly be marketed without the handle.
As before suggested the canopy may contain one or more threads as may be desired and it is not necessary to reduce the handle to receive the ferrule as the ferrule instead of being a long sleeve as shown, may be simply a narrow ring encircling'the lower end of the handle to properly brace the same.
1. A device of the class described, comprisin a bolt consistin of a threaded stem and a ead provided with a transverse kerf, and having at opposite sides of the head resilient lateral extensions, each of said extensions being bent over u on itself to grasp the material of the mop, t e free end of the extension bein adjacent to the stem, a handle, a fermi-li on the handle, said handle havin a recess in its end, an internally threa ed sleeve 1n the recess for receivm the stem, means on the sleeve for holding 1t in vbent over portlons of the extensions engaging the inner surface of the plate.
2. A device of the character specified, comprising a bolt havin a threaded stem and a head provided wlth oppositely extending lateral extensions, said extensions being bent over upon lthemselvestoward the stem for the purpose specified, a substantially conical cover plate having a threaded opening in its apex through which the stem passes, the inner surface of the. plate engaging the bent over portions, a handle having a recess in the end thereof, and an internally threaded sleeve in the recess for receiving the stem.
3. A device of the class described, com-- prisin a bolt comprising a threaded stem and a ead, said head having oppositely extending resilient lateral extensions, the ends of the extensions being bent over toward the stem for the purpose specified, a `handle threaded onto the stern, and a cover plate between the handle and the head of the stem, and having a threaded opening through which the stem passes.
4. In a device of the class described, a
mop head comprising a bolt having a threaded stem and a head having lateral extensions, the free ends of whichare bent over upon themselvestoward the stem for the purpose specified, aA sleeve having a threaded opening for receiving the stem, and Y a conica-l cover plate having a threaded openlng through Which the stem passes and 5. A device of the class described, cornprisin sions, the free ends of the extensions being bent over upon themselves toward the stem for fastening the mop material therebetween,
opening for the stem, and means between the sleeve and the head for engaging the said a bolt having a threaded-stem and a hea provided With lateral resilient exten-l 4.0 I* l engaging the extensions Wlth 1ts lnner face.
ends to clamp them on the mop material,
when the sleeve is turned toward the eX'- tensions.
6. In a device of the class described, a mop ent extensions, the free ends of the extensions being bent over upon themselves toward the stem for clasping the mop material .55" head colnprising a bolt having a threaded' stem and a head provided with lateralreSlitherebetween, and an internally threaded sleeve for receiving the stem.
