BODY-BOLSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application filed June 19, 1907. Serial No. 379,688.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OS\VALI) S. PULLIAH, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-Bolsters, of which the following is a specification. 7
The obj eet of my invention is to provide a new and improved body-bolster and to this end my invention consists of a body-bolster, in the novel features of construction and in the combination of parts all as fully herein described and claimed.
In the accompanylng drawing which illustrates applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of a bolster embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a part top plan and a part sectional view; Fig. 3 a side view of bolster; Fig. 1 a side View of the top connecting plate employed in the form of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 a plan of center-plate casting.
Referring to the drawing and first, to the form of bolster shown by Fig. 1, 1 and 2 re spectively designate two parts or members constituting the main portions of the tension or top-member 3, the web 4 and the compression or bottom-member 5 of a bodybolster. In addition to the parts mentioned each of the members 1 and 2 is provided with an inner vertically extending bearing member 6.
7 designates center-sills in the form of channels and 8 a plate bridging the space between the center-sills and secured to the upper flanges of the said sills.
The tension-members 3 of each of the parts or members 1 and 2 are connected by a centrally located topplate 9. This plate 9 is formed at each of its ends with hookedflanges 10, adapted to engage correspondingly hooked-flanges 11 formed on the inner ends of each of the tension-members 3.
The space between the members 6 is designed for the center-sills and for a portion of a center-plate casting 12. The centerlate cast-ing 12 as illustrated and as preerred comprises a compression-member 13, a center-bearing 14, two upright-members 15, a top-plate 16 connecting the upright-members and a web-portion 17. As illustrated the compression-member of the center-plate casting is provided with two slots 18 each adapted when the casting is applied, to receive a downwardly projecting lug 19. Lugs 19 are formed on the compression-members of the bolster. If desired this particular construction may be modified by forming the lugs on the center-plate casting and recesses in the compression-members of the bolster to receive said lugs as shown by Fig. 3.
In the form of bolster under consideration as well as the form of Fig. 3 the com pression-meniber 13 of the center-plate casting lies outside of the center-sill receivingopening of the bolster and the web portion 17 forms a continuation of the web portions 4 of the bolster proper.
In the form of Fig. 3 the body-bolster proper, comprising the tension-member 3, the web 1 and the bottom or eompression-memher 5 are made in one structure which structure is formed with the center-sill receivingopening.
The bolster parts proper, center-plate casting and center-sills are firmly secured together by means of rivets or bolts 20 passed through the web or vertical portion of the center-sills.
21 designates belts or rivets connecting the top connecting-plate 9, plate 8 and the upper flange of each of the center-sills.
WVhat I claim is:
1. The combination with center-sills of channel form, of a body-bolster comprising a compression-member having an opening to receive the center-sills and formed with fiat bearing faces extending from the opening toward the ends of the bolster, a tensionmember, and inner end-members fitted into the center-sills, a center-plate casting hav ing upright members projecting into the opening and arranged in contact with the center-sills, said center-sills being respectively located between and secured to an inner end-member and an upright member, said center casting having a compressionmember extending over and beyond the opening, one of the compression-members formed with a recess and the other with a projection adapted to enter the recess, and means for securing the tension-member to the upper flanges of the center-sills.
2. A body-bolster comprising a tensionmcmber, a compression-member formed with a center-sill receiving-opening, a downwardly projecting lug on the compressionmember, and a center-plate casting having a compression-member extending over the opening and formed with a recess to receive the lug.
3. A body-bolster comprising a tensionrable members constituting the main portions of the top, web and bottom of the bolster, a central top-plate having hooked flanges joining the top-members of the bolster, and a center-plate connecting the bot tom-members of the bolster.
6. The combination with center-sills of channel form, of a body-bolster comprising two separable main sections each comprising a tension-member and an inner endportion, said inner end-portions fitted into the center sills, said tension-members each formed at its inner end with hooked engaging means, a top-plate secured to the upper flanges of the center-sills and having engaging means coacting with the engaging means of the tension-members.
7. The combination with center-sills of channel form, of a body-bolster comprising two separable main sections each comprising a tension-member and'an inner end portion, said inner end-portions fitted into and secured to the center sills, said tensionmembers each formed at its inner end with hooked engaging means, a top-plate having hooked engaging means 'coacting with the engaging means of the tension-members, and means for securing the top-plate to the upper flanges of the center-sills.
8. The combination with center-sills of channel form, of a body-bolster comprising two separable main sections each comprising a tension member, a compression member, and inner end-portions fitted into the center sills, a center-plate casting having upright members of a height equal to the height of the center sills and arranged in contact therewith, means for securing said end-portions and uprights to the center-sills on opposite sides thereof, said casting having a compression-member projecting laterally beyond the lower flanges of the center-sills and located below the compression-members of the sections, and atop-plate secured to the upper flanges of the center-sills and connecting the inner ends of the tension-members.
9. The combination with center-sills of channel form, of a body-bolster comprising two separable sections each comprising a tension-member, a compression-member and an inner end-portion, said inner end-portions fitted into the center-sills, a centercasting having a compression member located below the center-sills and extending laterally beyond the centersills and arranged in contact with flat bearing-faces of the compression-members of the sections, said center casting formed with uprights of a height equal to the center-sills and arranged in contact with the inner faces of the centersills, bolts passed through the said uprights, center-sills and the inner end-portions of the sections, a plate bridging the space between the center-sills, said tension-members of the sections formed with engaging means on their inner ends, a top -plate having means for engaging the engaging-means of the tension -members, and bolts passed through the top-plate, bridging-plate, and the upper flanges of the sills.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
OSWALD S. PULLIAM.
