R. GREBNFIELD. COMBINED FAN AND SUNSHADE. APPLIUATION FILED JUNE 9, 1909.

RUDOLF GREENFIELD, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED FAN AND SUNSI-IADE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLF GREENFIELD, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hum gary, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsyl- `vania, have invented certain Improvements in Combined Fans and Sunshades, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which, when expanded, combines the functions of a fan and a sun shade, and when contracted, occupies but little space and can be conveniently carried in the hand or about the person.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a view of the inner side of a combined fan and sun shade constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in the expanded position; Fig.2 is a similar view showing the device in the contracted position; Fig. 3 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, on the line cz-a, Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is au enlarged section on the line -J), Fig. 3, omittingl the fabric covering and lining.
In the drawing, 1 represents a tubular stem having at the top a cross head 2 to which are pivotally connected the lower ends of a series of ribs 3 of which there may be as many as desired, five being shown in the present instance. These ribs are, by preference, composed of flat strips of spring steel or other elastic metal or material so that they may be free to bend, as shown in Fig. 3, when the device is expanded, as shown in Fie". 1.
Free to sllde in the tubular stem 1 is a rod 4 which may be provided at its lower' end with any suitable form of handle 5, this handle rod having thereon retainers 6 and 7 for engaging with slots in the tubular stem 1 so as to retain the handle rod eitherl in the lowered position shown in Fig. 1 or in the raised position shown in Fig. 2.
The handle rod 4 is provided, at its upper end, with a head 9 to which are pivotally connected the inner ends of a pair of stretcher bars 10, the outer ends of said stretcher bars being pivotally connected to the outermost ribs 3 but disconnected from the ribs intermediate of said outer ribs and the central rib 3 the head 9 having a slotted lug 11 which slides on said central rib 3, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The framework thus constructed is provided with an outer covering 12 and a lining 13 both secured to Speciication of Letters Patent.

the outer ends of the ribs, and composed of any fabric desired, and this covering can be further ornamented by bows or other ornaments 14 and 15 and by lace edging, fringe, or other edge ornamentation 16, as the demands of fashion or the taste of the manufacturer may suggest.
W'hen the handle rod 4 is pushed upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, the various ribs 3 of the device are drawn toward each other by the action of the stretcher bars 10 and lie flat and comparatively close together, as shown in Fig. EZ, so that the covering material is folded into small space and the handle rod 4 projects so slightly beyond the tubular stem 1 that the entire device occupies but little if any more room than an ordinary folded fan. lVhen, however, the handle rod 4 is drawn down, the ribs 3 are forced apart by the action of the stretchersl l0, and, as the outer ends of the ribs are confined laterally by the fabric covering which is secured lo said outer ends, they are caused to assume the bent or bowed position shown in Fig. 3 which, while not sufficient to interfere with the desired use of the device as a fan, renders it also available for use as a sunshade when held in the proper position above the head.
Owing to the relative fcwncss and simplicity of its parts the frame of the device can be cheaply constructed, yet the device can be rendered very attractive by a proper selection of material for the cover and lining. l
I claim 1. A combined fan and sunshade having a cover fabric, a guide member with ribs pivoted thereto at their inner ends and connected to the cover fabric at their outer ends, a rod slidably mounted on said member, and stretcher bars connecting the inner end of said rod with the outermost ribs of the series, the other end of the rod projecting bcyond the guide member whereby it can be operated from beyond the same to spread or contract the ribs.
2. A combined fan and sunshade having a cover fabric, a guide member with ribs pivoted thereto at their inner ends and connected to the cover fabric at their outer ends, a rod slidably mounted on said member, and stretcher bars connecting the inner end of said rod with the outermost ribs of the series, and extending transversely across the series of ribs, the other end of the rod projecting beyond the guide member whereby it can be operated ,from beyond the same to spread or contract the ribs.
3. A combined fan and sun shade having a cover fabric, a member With ribs pivoted thereto at their inner ends and connected to said cover fabric at their outer ends, a rod guided on said pivot member, and stretched bars connecting the inner end of said rod with the outermost ribs of the series but disconnected from the intermediate ribs.
4f. A combined fan and sun shade having a cover fabric, a member to Which are pivoted the inner ends of a series of ribs which are connected at their outer ends to said cover fabric, a rod guided on said pivot member, and having, at its inner end, a guide which slides upon the central rib of the series, and stretcher bars connecting said inner end of the rod With the outermost ribs of the series.
5. A combined fan and sun shade having a cover fabric, a member to which are pivoted the inner ends of a series of ribs which are connected at their outer ends to said cover fabric, a member to Which are pivoted the inner ends of a series of ribs Which are connected at their outer ends to the fabric covering, a rod guided on said pivot member, and having, at its inner end, a guide which slides upon the central rib of the series, and stretcher bars connecting said inner end of the rod with the outermost ribs of the series, but disconnected from the intermediate ribs.
In testimony whereof, have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
RUDOLF GREENFIELD.
