To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLrH PonoRNY, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, res1ding at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenoiling Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in stenciling appliance, its object being to pro! vide means for stencilingletters and figures without employingthe o-rdinary connections between the solid centers and the outer edge of the letter or figure, in connection with means for laying out the stencils upon a card or sheet.
To this' end my invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming partof this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an end View; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a chart forming part of my invention, and Fig. 5 is a plan viewA of a stencil sheet forming partl of my invention.
In the drawings A -represents a stencil card for forming the letters. In the drawing the card is out to form the letters C, D, and F. In those letters which have a solid center like C and D the vertical portions and the horizontal portions are separately cut, the stencil rst being laid down and theY vertical portions painted through the openings 2, the stencil then being moved to bring the openings 3 in position connecting the proper parts of the vertical openings, and the horizontal parts then being painted through the openings 3. The result is that the letters are formed without any connecortion of the letter and the outside edge. T e stencil card to the right of each letter is formed with a small opening 4 through which an impress is made upon the paper in forming the pre cedingvletter to mark the starting point of the lfollowing letter. Each stencil card is formed with a suit-able designating mark 5 indicating Ithe size of letter.
In order to position the stencil centrally upon the receiving card or sheet 6 I provide the board B. Having pivotal support 7 above'the rear edge of the board is aber 8. Springs 9 connect the rear side of the bar 'ing of the letter B w' with the board, normally tending to hold the bar turned upon its pivots with its frontedge in contact with the top face of the board. In order to hold the bar raised .out of contact with the board I prov-ide the eccentric cams 10 having pivotal support 11 in the ends of the bar and engaging with the face of the board. By turning these cams upon their pivots the front edge of the bar is raised away from the board.
Inscribed upon one end of the bar the chart C shown in Fig. 4. This chart consists of a plurality of rows of numerals, each row of numerals indicating one size of stencil let ters employed, as, for instance, 6, 6B, 7, 7B; and the numerals in each row designating the number of letters in the linel of stenciling to be inscribed upon the sheet 6. Inscribed upon the front edge of the face of the board B is a scale 12 to be used in determining the length of the sheet 6; and inscribed upon the face of the board immediately infront of the bar is a scale 13 by which the sheet 6 is positioned upon the board as hereinafter pointed out the scale 13 beginning at a point midway of the scale 12.
Slidable in a groove 14 in one end of the board is a bar 15 which extends transversely of the face of the board and constitutes a straight edge. The inner edge of the slidable bar 15 is formed with a scale 16 designating the heights of the different letters employed in making up the stencil.
In use,.assum1ng that a stencil design of four letters employing the style of letter designated as 9 is to be steneiled upon a sheet of paper 15 inches long, the sheet of paper upon being measured by the scale 12 and found to be 15 inches is placed upon the board with its right hand edge alining with the division point 15 upon the scale 13 and the straight edge bar 15 carried into engagement with the adjacent edge of the sheet. The numeral 4 in the number 9 row of the chart C will mark the beginnin point of the stenciled design. The stencil plate A will then be placed upon the 4sheet with the left hand ed e of the first letter of the design to be stenc' ed registering with the mark 4 of row 9 and the first letter, as the letter B, stenciled upon the aper. As heretofore de scribed the letter will be stenciled by first stenciling the vertical portions and then lling in the horizontal ortions. The stencilby means of a dot 4 in the stencil plate mark the beginning of the next letter and in a similar manner when the letter B is completed the next letter willA be stenciled upon the sheet (3 and so on through the line. The scales are so proportioned that this will bring the stenciled matter directly in the center longitudinally of the sheet 6. The letters are so cut in the stencil plate A that with the upper edge of the stencil plate contacting with the 'ront edge of the pivoted bar the lower edge of the letters will register with the scale 16, that' is the lower edgeA of the letters in stencil plate number 9will` register with the indication 9 upon saidscal'e. n order to get the bottom of the line even where letters of dierent sizes are used', it is only necessary in forming the initial letter'7 as for instance a letter oi' stencil plate number 9 to make a little mark on the edge of' the cardboard at the same height as the corresponding figure (9) on the scale 16, then move the receiving card up underneath the bar 8- until the mark is in line with the figure on scale 16 correspond ing with the size of the letter next to be used.
I claim as my invention:
1. Stenciling means of the class described comprisingA in combination with a stencil plate, aboard formed with a pair of scales one ofv said scales beginning at a point mid- Wayof the other scale, andan adjustable straight edge registering with the shorter scale.
2. In combination a board provided with a pivotally supportedi bar turnable into and out of Contact with the face of said board7 a chart upon the :tace 01": said bar, and parallel scales upon the face of said board, one of said scales beginning at a point midway ofl the other scale and said' scales and chart being subdivided' in the Ina-nner and for the purpose set forth.

In combination a stencil plate having stencil openingsl of predetermined size cut therethrough, a boa-rd, a bar turnable into and out of contact with the face of said board, a chart upon the face of said bar a pair of scales upon the face ofv said board; and a straight edge adjustable in connection with one oi' said scales, said scalesand chart being vproportioned to each other, and said chart being subdivided in relation to the sizes of the stencil openings in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
6. A stencil card having stencil openings cut therethrough to forni characters, the vertical and horizontal portions of the char acters being independently cut through the card and the openings representing the parallel horizontal portions and the parallel vertical portions of the characters being interspaced, and a board formed with horizontal and vertical scales to cooperate with the horizontal vertical portions of said cha-ractersin the manner and for the purposeset forth.
