, Improvements in Type-Setting Cases, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a case ofsimple and inexpensive construction to facilitate setting up type in a holder for printing addresses or other matter.
The invention is particularly designed for use in offices where addressing machines are employed to periodically address letters or envelops to a list of customers or subscribers. In such machines printing devices are largely used in which the addresses are set up in rubber or metal type. The addresses are changed and new addresses are supplied from time to time and as the work of operating the machine and keepin the list of addresses complete is usually left to an office boy or a clerk without skill in mechanics and type setting, it is desirable and almost necessary to provide a very simple means which can be easily manipulated to facilitate the type setting.
While my invention is particularly useful for the purpose of setting addresses for addressing machines it is capable of use for other purposes in like manner and with equally satisfactory results.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a plan view showing as much of the bed as is necessary to understand the construction and operation of the machine and with the setting frame in position to receive a type from one of the type channels on the bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the setting frame in position relative to the type holder with the line of type delivered therefrom into the holder. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken across the type grooves of Fig.3
and looking toward the upper end thereof.

The case comprises a bed 6 which is adapted to be supported in an angular position on legs 7 so that the setting operation can be more conveniently erformed. These 0 annels may be formed in the bed itself or they can be formed by bending metal strips into proper shape to receive the type, the said channels being located side by side across the upper portion of the bed. 480,599 filed March 1, 1909, or any other suitable holder adapted for the purpose. An index plate 10 is suitably secured on the bed across the channels and it bears characters corresponding to those on the type. An arm 11 is secured to the bed and projects downwardly therefrom, being most conveniently located near the right hand corner of the lower edge of the bed. This arm is provided to support the address holder 12 which is secured in place on the arm against the stops 13,14, by a locking device 15 which is pivoted at 16 on the arm and is provided with a handle 17. A spring 18 is fastened to the arm and to the locking device to hold it in engagement with the address holder and to lock the address holder securely in place against the stops. A stop 19 limits the swinging movement of the locking device when the address holder is removed. A stop 20 on the arm determines the position of the address holder lengthwise" on the arm. p
The setting frame 21 is preferably of skeleton form for lightness and it is provided with a guide flange 22 which travels freely. in a slot 23 extending across the bed below the type channels' This setting frame comprises a type holder 24 which is preferably formed by bending a strip of metal into shape to rovide a type groove 25 c0rresponding su stantially to the type channel 9 and the type grooves in the holder 12 with the exception that the upper end 24 of said holder 24 is flared -to provide a funnel shaped upper end for the type groove 25 to facihtate the insertion of type in said preferably has a flange 26 on one side and the type holder 2-1 also has a flange 27 to overlap and engage said offset. In the flange 27 of the holder 24 I prefer to, provide one or more recesses 27' by cuttin away theflange-to leave the groove exposed for its entire width so that one type can be readily removed from the groove whenever it is necessary for correction and this can be done without removing the entire line or a large part thereof. A stop 28 is located at the lower end of the type groove to hold the line of type therein as it is being set up in the groove and this stop projects upward through an opening in the bottom of the type groove and is mounted on a spring arm 29 fastened to the setting frame.
The setting frame is provided with a handle 30 whereby the frame is moved back and forth across the bed and the type are transferred from the type channels 9 to the type groove 25 with tweezers or any other suitable device. The funnel shaped end of the type groove in the setting frame facilitates the transference of the type for it eliminates the necessity of perfect registration between the type groove 25 and the type channel. When a line of type has been set up in the groove 25 of the setting frame the latter is moved over and the type groove registered with one of the grooves 12 of the address holder 12. The registering means comprises a rock device 31 pivotally mounted at 32 on the setting frame and provided with a suitable handle or thumb piece 33. A spring 34is attached to the setting frame and to the rock device to hold it in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 against the stop 40, or in the position shown in dotted lines in said figure as it appears when registering the groove of the setting frame with the groove of the ad- 'dress holder. The rock device comprises a stud 35 which engages the spring arm 29.
and depresses it sufficiently to withdraw the stop 28 from the groove 25 so that the type in the groove may be transferred to the address holder. There is also a lug 36 on the rock device which is adapted to enter a groove in the address holder to register the groove 25 with another groove of the addressholder. A socket 37 is provided in the arm 11 to receive the lug 36 to register the groove 25, with the last groove (at the left of the holder 12).
It has been found to be easier and more satisfactory in every way to transfer a complete line of type to the address holder instead of setting up one type at a time directly therein and this is due largely to the fact that it necessitates the perfect registration of the address holder and the channel. or groove from, which the type comes only once, that is to say for the complete line of type instead of for each individual type. It is for this reason that I provide the setting frame holder 24 in which the line of type is first set and then transferred to the address holder 12. As before stated the setting frame holder need not be registered exactly with the type channel from which the type istransferred because the funnel shaped receiving end of said groove allows a considerable departure from perfect registration without preventing the setting operation from being performed. At the same time that the type groove 25 is lockedv in registration with a groove in the address holder 12 the stop 28 is automatically moved out of the groove 25 to permit the line of type therein to be dragged or pushed into the holder 12 andwhen this has been done the stop is automatically returned to position in the type groove 25 as the setting frame is unlocked.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A type-setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, an address holder removably secured on the bed with its type channels substantially parallel with the channels of the bed, and a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder, and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels, and to discharge the type at the other end into the holder.
2. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, means for supporting an address holder on the bed, a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels, the type channels on the bed, address holder and setting frame all extending in the same direction, and means for registering said setting frame with the address holder.
3. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, an arm projecting from the lower edge of said bed, means for securing an address holder on said arm, and a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels and discharge said type at the other end into said holder.

5. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, and a setting frame freely movable across the bed and comprising an address holder having a groove therein to receive type from the channels, said holder having an inturned flange on one side projecting partly across the groove to partly overlap and engage the type and said flange being cut away between its ends to leave the type groove exposed for its entire width.
6. A type-setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, means for supporting an address holder on the bed, a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels and discharge said type at the other end into said holder, a movable stop in the groove at its discharge end, and means for registering said setting frame with the address holder.
7. A type-setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, a setting frame freely movable across the bed and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels, said groove being flared or funnel-shaped at its receiving end, a stop spring pressed into operative position across said groove, pivotally mounted manual means for forcing said stop out of operative position, and a device for yieldingly retaining said manual means in or out of operative relation to said stop.
'8. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, means for supporting an address holder on the bed, a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels and discharge said type at the other end into said holder, said groove being flared or funnel shaped at its receiving end, a movable stop in the groove at its discharge end, and means for registering said setting frame with the type holder.
9. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, a settin frame freely movable across the bed and having a type groove to receive type atfone end from the channels, a stop in the groove at its other end, and immovable longitudinally thereof, means for holding said stop in said groove, and means for holding said stop out of said groove.
10. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, a setting frame freely movable across the bed and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels, a stop in the groove at its other end, a spring yieldingly supporting said stop, and means for de pressing said spring to withdraw the stop from the groove.
11. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, means for supporting an address holder on the bed, a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels and discharge said type at the other end into said holder, a stop at the discharge end of said groove, a spring yieldingly supporting said stop in the groove, and a rock device adapted to move said spring to withdraw the stop from the groove.
12. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, means for supporting an address holder on the bed, a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels and discharge said type at the other end into said holder, a rock device on the setting frame, and a lug on said rock device to engage said holder or its support to register the frame with the holder.
13. A type setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, means for supporting an address holder on the bed, a setting frame freely movable across the bed between the channels and the address holder and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels and discharge said type at the other end into said holder, a stop at the discharge end of said groove, a spring yieldingly supporting said stop in the groove, a rock device on the setting frame, a stud on the rock device to move said spring to withdra the stop from the groove, and a lugon s'ai rock device to engage said holder or its support to register the frame with the holder.
14. A type-setting case comprising a bed having a plurality of type channels thereon, a setting frame freely movable across the bed and having a type groove to receive type at one end from the channels, a stop for retaining the type in said groove, normally spring-pressed into operative position across said groove, pivotally 4, mounted manual means for withdrawin said stop -from its operative position, an means for holding said stop in inoperative position against the force of its retaining spring.
