LABEL-HOLDER FOR LABELING-MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. Wnrss, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and Y State of New York, have invented certain and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to labeling machines and more particularly to machlnes of the type disclosed in my prior application, Serial No. 574,872, filed August 1st, 1910, of which this is a division, and 1t has for its object to provide a simple, efiicient and durable label .holderthat will produce a uniform feed and ofier certain advantages in the way of adjustments and conveniences for the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide ani-mproved automatic feedin de' vice for presenting the labels at the delivery end of the holder as the pile becomes diminished.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

To first briefly outline the general nature of the labeling machine in connection with which I have, in the present instance, shown the device of my invention combined, ref erence will be had more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 in which- 1, 2, 3 and 4 illustrate uprights constituting parts of themain frame of the labeling machlne. A swinging picker 5 is employed in the'latter, pivoted at 6 and operated by a connecting rod 7 and as it moves between the label holders to be hereinafterdescribed and its delivery point, it is supplied on its plcking faces 8 and 9 with adhesive by a distributing roller 10 vibrated on a pivot 11 by a connecting rod 12 so that it contacts alternately with the picker faces and the feed roll 13 of an adhesive receptacle 13 The machine is adapted for the simultaneous application of two labels, such as the neck and bodylabels of a bottle, and hence two label boxes 14 and 15 are provided,
preferably in rear of the uprights 1 and 2. In the present instance they are both carried on a table or support 16 having a limited movement from front to rear of the machine on a centrally disposed guide 17 projecting forwardly from therear standards 3 and 4, and flanked on either side by brackets 18 forming extended guidingabuh ments. The table has an adjustable bearing .against the abutments to a limited degree as it turns on its supporting guide 17 in the plane of the labels through the medium of set screws or other suitable adjustable stops 19, extending therethrough and contacting with the upper faces of the brackets. In this way adjustment of the label holder laterally of the path of the picker is efi'ected to improve the alinement between the two when necessary. 4
The label boxes themselves may be of any suitable construction, but are preferably divided so. that the piles of labels may be inserted edgewise from the top of -the machine into one-half after the other half or removable portion has been detached. In the present instance the body label box 15 comprises a lower half 20 and an upper half 21, the former being secured at 22 in a forward position on the table 16, and the latter being held in'. cooperative relation therewith by a thumb screw 23 permitting their detachment from each other. Each is fitted with suitand arranged in the same manner as the guide stakes 25 on the neck label holder shown in detail in Fig. 4, each stake'being provided with a supporting arm 26 that is held under a screwor clamping device 27 different sets oflabels varying slightly as to size. The forward ends of the stakes, or
at least a proportion ofthem, have inwardly turned toes- 28 that normally prevent the advanced labels of the pile from being forced out of the box by the follower devices hereinafter described, but permitting the removal of the labels one at a. time by the adhesive contact of the picker 8 in a manner well known in the art. The upper or, in the present instance, neck label holding box 14, is also composed of a lower part 29 and an upper part 30, held against it by a suitable catch device 31 or otherwise. the lower part being secured at 32- in a forward position on a supplementary table 33 over-. hanging the body label box 15. The table 33 is in turn mounted on pins or standards 31 rising from the table 16' in rear of the lower label box, and is preferably removable to permit ready access to the latter.
It'is sometimes desired to interrupt the label feed to the picker without at the same time preventing the operation of the various other mechanisms, as for instance, during adjustments or tuning up of the parts, say, when the paste pot has just been filled and the various paste transferring devices have not run sufliciently long to become properly coated. It is for this purpose that the label holder table 16 is given its limited horizon- .tal front and rear movement on the guide 17 and the bearing surfaces 18, such movement being effected in the present instance by a pair of draw bars 35 fixed to a rock shaft 36 journaled in the table at 37 The draw bars extend forwardly at each side of the main frame to terminate in laterally extending handle portions 38 and are provided with looking projections 39 that cooperate with lateral stops or projections 40 on the front uprights 1 and 2 to lock the label holder in its forward position. In this position the picker can engage the piles of-labels, but when the draw bars are raised by the operator and the label holder pushed back, the range of upward and backward movement of the picker is too limited for it to reach the labels at all, and hence while it passes through its picln'ng movement 'as usual the latter is rendered ineffective.
In view of the fact that the neck label picking surface 9 of the picker 5 is in a difierent plane from the body label picking surface 8 thereof and advancedwith respect thereto in the direction of downward movement of the picker, for the pln'pose of conforming approximately to the contour of a bottle, the neck labelbox 14 is arranged in a position slightly forwardly ofthe body label box 15 so that the bottom or foremost label of its pile is presented a little in advance of that of the other, and the picker is enabled to detach labels simultaneously backing up theintermittent pressure of the latter as well as compensating for the depletion of the piles themselves are practically the same for each label box, anda description of one will suffice for both. Referring more particularly therefore to Figs. 2. l and 5 of the drawings, illustrating the neck label holder in detail, a bracket 11 arranged centrally in rear of the label box 11 offers a guide 42 for a follower rod 43 that is preferably disconnected from but bears loosely against afollower plate l-l, preferably through the medium of a yielding element, such as a leaf spring 15, interposed between the two. The follower plate operates in the box and engages the top or rear ends of the pile of labels. A shaft 16 journaled in the bracket 41 is fitted with an arm 47 having a weight 48 adjustable thereon to normally operate a second arm 19 in a direction causing a link 50 pivoted thereto at 51 and to the follower rod 43 at 52. to operate the rod against the follower plate and labels. prevent a retrograde movement of the follower device and labels under the contact of the pickers, the rod 43 is provided with teeth 53 with which cooperate a pair of pawls 54 pivoted at 55 to the bracket or guide 4142, and held by gravity in normal engagement therewith. These pawls, or at least their engaging portions, are so spaced and arranged with respect to the spacing of the teeth'53 on the follower rod that one is in operative engagement with 'a tooth at the time the other is in a position between the two teeth, and thus without making the latter so fine as to jeopardize their strength or the dependability of their engagement, the rod is locked without an appreciable degree of lost movement by actuation thereof through a distance equal to less than the distance between two teeth. Stop pins 56 on the pawls limit the gravity actuated move against the labels, and also lock the pawls to resist the strain of their engagement with the rod. When it is desired to lock the follower in a retracted position, as for instance while a'plle of'labels is being inserted in the 'box, a catch 57, pivoted at 58 to the table,

I claim as my invention:
1. In a'label holder for bottle labeling is swung up to engage the arm 49 and mainmachines, the combination with a table or supportfof a body label box mounted theresition overhanging the latter.
2. In a label holder for bottle labeling machines, the combination with a table or support, of a body label box mounted thereon to sustain labels in a horizontal pile, a
' standard arranged on the table at one side of the box and independently of the supporting means for the latter, a bracket on the standard, and a neck label box carried on the bracket independently of the body label box to overhang the latter, the neck label box beingindependently detachable and each box being made in saparable halves divided horizontally so that the upper half may be lifted ofi to permit the pile of labels to be inserted edgewise.
3. In a label holder machines, the combination with a table or support, of a body label box mounted therefor bottle labeling on to sustain labels in a horizontal pile, standards arranged torise from the table on opposite sides of the box and independently of the supporting means for the latter, a bracket on the standards spanning the box, and a neck label box carried by the bracket independently of the body label box to overhang the latter, theneck label box being made in separable halves divided horizontally so that the upper half may be lifted off to permit the pile of labels to be inserted edgewise.
4. A label holder for labeling machines comprising a support, a label box thereon,
a bracket on the support having a guidev therein, a follower provided with a stem or rod movable in the guide to bear against the pile of labels, a lever jonrnaled on the bracket having one ofits arms weighted rand a link connected to the other arm and to the follower.
