Description

J'. H. WILKINS. LQGK. APPLICATION FILED JULY 23,1908.

JOHN H. WILKINS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
LOCK.
Specication of 'Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application filed July 23, 1908. Serial No. 444,936.
To all 'whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. WrLKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening means and locking devices and has particular reference to a lock in which the latch upon coming in Contact with the nosing of the door j amb causes thdintroduction of a bolt into the door jamb.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the lock and nosing with the cover of the lock removed and showing the latch extended outwardly engaging the nosing. Fig. 2 is a similar view without the nosing and showing the latch adapted to engage the nosing prior to the projection of the bolt, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 showing the position of the various parts viewed from below line 3 3.
4 is the frame work which may be of any suitable construction provided with a proj ection 6 into which the end 7 of the latch 11 has its bearing, said latch being provided with a spiral spring or other suitable resilient material 8 adapted to hold it normally in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
9 is a tumbler provided with a spring 10 and adapted to be engaged by the shoulder 11a of the latch 11 so that as the latch 11 is pressed inwardly into the lock the tumbler 9 is forced upwardly against the action of the spring 10. 12 is another tumbler on. top of the tumbler 9 also provided with a spring or other suitable resilient material such as 10 and provided with a projection 13 adapted to engage the opening 14 in the bolt 15. The bolt 15 may be held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by the spring 16 mounted upon the 18 is a slide having a pin bearing 19 engaging the tumbler 20 provided with a projection 21 adapted to engage the cam bearing 22 in the underlying tumbler 12. This slide is also provided with an enlargement or projection 23 adapted to be engaged by the lever 24 when the same is operated upon the pin 25.
26 is the bearing of a suitable knob or handle such as 27 and engages the tumbler 2() which provides bearing for the tumbler 12 so that by turning said knob, the tumbler 20 is rotated upon the bearing 26 and lifts the tumbler 12 from the bolt 15 thereby throwing the slide 18 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 rightwardly. From this it will be seen that as the latch, which. may be in the position shown in Fig. 2, encounters the nosing, it is thrown inwardly raising the tumbler 9 out of engagement with the top of the bolt thereby disengaging the same against the action of the spring 16 which throws said bolt out and into the socket of the nosing as shown in Fig. 1 in which position it is locked by the projection 13 of the tumbler 12. While the bolt is in this position vthe latch 11 remains back in the lock in which position it is held by the nosing on the door jamb thus allowing the door to be opened as soon as the bolt 15 is drawn back.
In opening the door from the inside the knob 27 may be turned so as to throw the tumbler 20 to the back of the lock to engage the laterally projecting wing 28 of the bo t 15 drawing said bolt into the lock and out of engagement with the nosing. While in this position the slide 30 provided with button 31 may be shot up and into the opening 32 of the slide 18 thereby holding the bolt within the lock and allowing the latch 11 to be operated independently of the other parts. When the door is to be opened from the outside a suitable key is inserted into a dog cylinder or other suitable attachment 29 so as to engage the lever 24 which is turned thereby and engages the projection 23 of the slide 18 which in turn engages the projection 28 of the bolt 15 withdrawing it out of engagement with the nosing as before stated and the latch 11 being held within the lock by virtue of its contact with the nosing allows the door now to be readily opened.
Of course it will be readily understood that various modications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a locking device, a latch adapted to be operated when said device is being used, a spring actuated bolt held within said device by a tumbler, a shoulder upon said latch adapted to operate said tumbler and release said bolt when said latch is operated, a second tumbler adapted to engage and hold said bolt in its projected position and a third tumbler having sliding bearing within said second tumbler and means for operating said third tumbler whereby said second tumbler is disengaged from said bolt and the same is withdrawn.
2. In a looking device, a latch adapted to be operated when said device is being used, a spring aotuated bolt held within said device by a tumbler. a shoulder upon said latch adapted to operate said tumbler vand release said bolt when said latch is operated, a second tumbler adapted to engage and hold said bolt in its projected position and a third tumbler having a projection engaging a curved slot within said second tumbler and means for operating said third tumbler whereby said second tumbler is disengaged from said bolt and thev same is withdrawn, and means for locking said bolt in its withdrawn position.
3. ln a locking device, a spring actuated latch adapted to he operated when said device is being used, a spring actuated bolt held within said device by a spring actuated tumbler, a shoulder upon said latch adapted to operate said tumbler and release said bolt when said latch is operated, a second spring actuated tumbler adapted to engage and hold said bolt in its projected position and a third tumbler engaging an irregular opening within said second tumbler and means for operating said third tumbler whereby said second tumbler may be disengaged by key or knob from said bolt and the same withdrawn.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN H. VILKINS.
