To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN D. FERGUSON, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, United States of America, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention is an improvement in amusement apparatus, including an umbrella or sun shade, for use on lawns, parks,

play grounds, etc., and a round-a-bout device for use in connection therewith; and

the invention consists in certain novel conable tenon B on the lower end of the upy right B. The base A and the upright B may be of any suitable metal and the upright B is hollow and is provided with a cross plate B2 perforated at B3 for drainage purposes, and at its upper end the upright B has the central tube B4 which forms a guide for the umbrella rod C, which latter seats at its lower end in a socket B5 in the cross plate B2, as best shown in Fig. 1. This central tube BAL forms an annular channel BG within the upright at the upperl end thereof and this channel BG receives the depending arms D of the traveling carriers D, which travelers have laterally extending arms D2 supported on and movable along the upper edge B7 of the upright as a track, and by preference grooved rollers D3 are provided to run upon the track B7 and rollers D4 at the lower ends of the depending arms D to operate within the channel BG and thus relieve friction in the operation of the invention as more fully described hereinafter.

The carriers D are designed to form supports from which hammocks, chairs, swings, or gymnasium devices may be suspended as will be understood from Fig. l, and the carriers may be moved around the upright B below the umbrella E for amusement purposes or for shifting out of the sun in the use of the invention. rIhe carriers D are especially designed, when the holder is made of iron, as supports from which may be suspended chairs, swings, hammocks or the like for children so the said devices may be moved around by the hand and thus kept in the shade, no operating means being provided. lhen the holder is made of pottery the carrier may be utilized as supports for swinging flower baskets or other ornaments.

rIhe umbrella has suitable ribs E and stretchers E2 so it may be raised and lowered and is provided with a depending curtain or valance F, and is surmounted by a flag G as best shown in Fig. l.

The holders H for iiowers or the like are carried by the upright B and communicate therewith through openings IVI for drainage purposes, the said holders and the upright B being preferably finished in the similitude of a tree trunk and branches to give an ath tractive appearance to the device when used upon lawns.

Screws B10 may be arranged as shown in Fig. l to secure the tenon B in the socket A, and at the lower end of the base A I provide a lateral flange A10 which steadies the anchorage o f the base in the ground.

In operation any suitable devices such as hammocks, chairs or swings, may be suspended from the traveling carriers and the latter be moved around the support below the umbrella E and by fitting the upright detachably to its base, the umbrella, etc., may be stored under shelter during the cold weather. I also provide on the upright B studs or projections I on which cards bearing t-he number of the house or the profession of the occupant may be suspended as shown in Fig. l of the drawing.

In Fig. l I show a spacing bar D10 for holding the carriers D at proper distances apart.

TWhen the apparatus is designed for supporting hammocks, swings, etc., it may be preferred to make the base and upright B of iron or other suitable metal, but when simply used as a holder for the umbrella and for flowers, the said parts may be made of any suitable form of pottery or stone ware.

I claim- 1. An amusement apparatus comprising an upright provided at its upper end With an annular chamber and traveling carriers having arms depending Within said chamloer and provided With rollers operating therein and also having lateral arms and rollers bearing upon the upper edge of the uprightas a track, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination in an apparatus of an upright having an annular chamber opening at its upper end and having said upper end adapted to form a track, and a traveling carrier 1naving a depending arm operating in the annular chamber, and a lateral arm supported on the track-like upper end of the upright, substantially as set. forth.

3, An amusement apparatus comprising an upright having an annular chamber at its upper end, and provided at its upper end surrounding said chamber with a circular track, a carrier having a depending arm operating in said chamber, and provided on said arm below the upper end of the chamber with a roller having a vertical axis operating in said chamber, the carrier having a lateral arm extending outwardly from said depending arm over the circular track, and a roller ournaled on said arm and having an approximately horizontal axis and operating upon the circular track at the upper end of the annular chamber.

An amusement apparatus comprising an upright provided at its upper end with an annular chamber, and a series of traveling carriers independent of each other and having at their inner ends arms depending Within Said chamber, and rollers on the said carriers adjacent to said arms and bearing upon the upper `edge of the upright as a track, substantiallT as and for the purpose set forth.

An amusement apparatus comprising an upright having its upper end circular in cross section and provided in `Said upper end with a central portion concentric with the circular upper end of the upright and having its outer Side Circular whereby to coperate with the upper end of the upright in forming an ainiular chamber at such end of the upright, and a series of carriers each independent of the others and provided at their inner ends with arms depending Within said annular chamber and between the central tube and the Walls of the upright, rollers on the said depending arms7 and rollers on the carriers and operating upon the upper circular end of the upright, substantialliv as set forth.
