To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NABOR SoLiANI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at [Sestri Ponente, near Genoa, in the Kingdom of Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to \Varships, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to armored warships and has for its chief object to provide means for protecting the vital parts of the ship below the armor belt.
I11 battleships and armored cruisers as at present constructed it is customary to employ a protective deck having sloping sides which meet the ships sides at the lower edge of the armor belt, and for the sake of economizing weight such belt is seldom made sufficiently deep to extend more than seven feet below the surface of the water at normal draft. Recent experience has proved that in a heavy sea the armor belt at times becomes completely exposed for the whole of its depth, and under these conditions it is possible for a projectile to penetrate the ships side below the belt and to inflict disastrous results.
According to this invention instead of deepening the armor belt in such a manner as to cause the same to extend still farther below the surface of the water with a proportionate increase in the weight of the armor, I lower the inclined sides of the pro tective deck for a considerable distance below the lower edge of the armor belt, thereby extending the defense olfered by the protective deck and also by the coal carried between the inclined sides thereof and the sides of the ships hull with a minimum increase in the weight of the ship.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same is described with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates in cross section part of a ships hull constructed in accordance with this invention.
A represents the armor belt, B the protective deck and B the inclined sides thereof. Instead of such inclined sides B meeting the ships sides at the bottom of the armor belt A they are lowered for a considerable distance a, it, below the lower edge of the armor belt. By this arrangement the protective deck possesses the advantage of affording an additional protection to the vital parts of the ship below the armor belt and in the event of a projectile striking the ships side below such belt under the above stated conditions, it would probably be stopped or be deflected by the inclined sides of such deck and be thereby prevented from materially damaging the vital parts of the ship.
The unarmored portion of the ship side between the lower edge of the armor belt A and the inclined portion of the protective deck may conveniently be employed for the discharge overboard of boilerashes and drainage matter from the deck without the necessity of providing or utilizing ports or other fittings either in the armor or in the sloping sides of the protective deck for effecting such purpose.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A battleship or cruiser provided with an armor belt and a protective deck having sloping sides which meet the ships sides at a considerable distance below the lower edge of the armor belt.
